Is this game that addictive, or are people idling it, or both?

What's so appealing about clicking something over and over anyways?

a sense of progression n instant gratifying in game rewards are quite addictive. Even if it's mindless clicking. Look at candy crush sales.

I've heard that it inspired the Monster Summer Sale game. I believe Adventure Capitalist is the same...

Sure, they gave credits to Cookie Clicker, AdVenture Capitalist and Clicker Heroes at bottom of the mini game page.

It''s addictive on the one hand and it encourages idling on the other. So, I'd say both.

Yep both... Clicker gets a lot of time because some achievements like the kill counter on bosses only accrues while the game runs. (Unlike Adventure Capitalist which runs just fine while you are offline.)

How do you get your page to look like that? Enhanced Steam?

Also people probably idle it overnight, though you really don't need to unless you're in Progression Mode. I cut mine off one night and woke up in the morning and it was as if I left it running overnight. Had tons of money to spend on upgrades xD

Both. I'm actually idling most of the time while I go read a book or something.

It's easy to leave running all day and just check back in every few hours to buy heroes and use your skills to break through whatever boss you stopped at. I've been playing since May 13, according to Steam, and I've got over 300 hours in it.

Oh, so its not that people are constantly playing it, just leaving it idle so when they do play it, they've got points/gold/whatever to spend?

That's one way to play it. You don't even have to have the game open to get gold in the game.

I didn't play it much the first couple of times I opened it but then AdCap was getting boring and man, clicker heroes started getting better. Its a slow start.

Why not give it a try? It's FREE*
...actually, that might be a big factor too, it's free so everybody can play it.

These games are crap. I wish people would spend their time playing actually good games instead of these inane things.

I'm not saying that these are bad just for the sake of it, but they predate on some "gaming" archetypes that are compulsory and obsessive; and I'm pretty sure that if you analyze the psychological behaviors, you will find that morally, these games ain't doing it right. Just like Candy Crush and those other mindless games.

Note the word: "mindless".

274 hours played for me, according to Steam...probably 272 of those are idled hours...

I'm in your screenshot! :D
And yeah, a bit of both.
Plus, it's one of the few I've found so far (haven't tried many) that streams well over my wireless to my Linux box.
Most of the reason it's on for a long time is because you can idle it, and I go off and do other things while it runs and then I forget that it's still on and I go to bed and wake up in the morning and do other things and finally come back to my Windows PC and I'm like... oh shit... that's still running?!

It's good for "playing" in the background while doing other things.

It has the same addictive feel as any mmo. Just one more level, one more boss.
If you just leave it open bonus rubies drop. These are the currency you can buy with real money so having free rubies is important. You can't get them unless the game itself is open.

it's a total for all friends in the last two weeks, so 1315 hours divided by 27 people = an average of two full days of "playing" per person in the last two weeks.

lol, I love seeing people that says "this is crap, they should play better games instead"

Little they know that clicker heroes are best played while sleeping/afk with properly setuped scripts/autoclicker.

It's a nice programming exercise too since it combines:

  • auto clicking
  • time management for proper skill usage
  • failure detection to know when to ascend (haven't implemented yet)
  • pixel detection for levelling heroes automatically
  • image detection for clicking those oranges that pop-up

It's addicting because there's this feeling that after you got home or you wake up, you see your script/program that you made working properly and has accumulated tons of virtual $$$ so you can push your max lvl a little more before ascending.

I play both adventure capitalist and clicker heroes (even if the second one a lot less) I just keep them open in the background doing other stuff, most of the time forgetting about them, that's why I rack up so many hours in it and so do people :p

It is pretty addictive. personally I played it for a very long time in Kongregate, passed zone 2000 etc. and quit when they added more heroes after Frostleaf. So I don't play it anymore. Imo you get over it pretty fast, like in 1 year or so. The game is much, much better than Adventure Capitalist for example. I never liked that game.
