I don't watch scary movies, but I've seen some pretty startling scenes in non-scary movies.

This Jacuzzi scene. Be glad the most frightening scenes have been cut out.

Was just about to post that IT scene. That stayed with me for a while when I was a kid.

I read the book when I was 12 before I saw the film at 15. When I saw the film, I had to try so hard not to laugh. Absolutely shameful attempt at an adaptation. Apart from a few jump scares (balloon scene in the library?) it was really pretty atrocious. Also, I recognised John-Boy Walton and couldn't suspend disbelief...
To this day though, I think of Tim Curry when I think of scary clowns and I LOVED him when he was on Criminal Minds.

Didn't see you'd already posted this. The rest of the Hostel movies didn't affect me much but the part with the rusty/dull scythe scraaaaping across her skin was unggggh... :/

What lead up to that scene freaked me out though. She got into a party boat with a seemingly alright person in a foreign country and ended up that way.

That's Eastern Europe for you. Literally, everyone I know who's visited there had at least 2 friends abducted, raped and slashed to bits. Same with France, a friend's daughter went there, was abducted, raped, forcibly addicted to heroin and then sold into sex-slavery.

Evil Dead 2 when Linda's reanimated corpse does a little dance through the trees then lightly jumps away into the darkness.

I find things closer to real crime scarier than ghosts and stuff. The rape scene in 'Irreversible' is pretty hideous, as is the fight scene near the start. Again, not sure if it's scary or just disturbing.
Watched that movie alone at night and within the first 5 minutes I was wondering whether to turn it off or not. The hideous sound effects, disorientating camera work and flashing lights don't help either. You can search for it yourself if you're interested, I doubt the full rape scene will be on youtube though.

Well, I think I could link the whole movie as it's only scary if you watch it from beginning to end. Happy nightmares I guess... Sorry in advance if you watch it.

Not necessarily "scary" to me, but as uncomfortable for me as cinema has managed to get (so far):
Irreversible - that scene. Absolutely horrible.
Hostel 2 - geek chick having the rusty scythe drawn across her skin. cringe
Mr. Brooks - The scene where his daughter stabs him in the throat with scissors.
Very few scenes from the Saw films (or any other gore-porn film) scare me, or even move me.

Not that those scenes aren't gory, but it wasn't the gore that got to me. In the case of Hostel 2 it's the sound of the scythe dragging across her skin and the sense of terror, in Mr. Brooks it's the realism and suddenness.
You're right, scary is much harder than gory. Very little scares me any more, at least, not in horror movies.

The fucking Dead Birds movie. I couldn't even finish it when I first watched it long ago. Too bad there are no clips of it around, otherwise I would have posted it for shits.

The first time I saw this, I'm pretty sure I cried for hours.
Not the scariest ever, but I'm watching it on television, and it gave me the question.
