Why does steam force you to use steam guard mobile authenticator to trade without holds? I don't have a smartphone, so I was forced to download Andy and use Google Voice for recieving a text. Fuck you steam, please realize some of us don't like/have/want a smartphone.

To save money spent on support which has to deal with stupid people getting scammed, which also ruins Steam economy (as it results in items duplication).

Steam doesn't refund stuff anymore, in any case, steamguard\trade window\etc... it doesn't matter, so duplication should be gone

The reason they don't refund stuff anymore is because they used the advanced steam guard to cover their asses.
Before that, some people used the excuse of email steam guard being too weak to get their items back from 'hacks' through phising links (although most of the time they were just scammed or trying to dupe items)

Because they were getting around 10k emails a month about people getting their items/account stolen.

And that probably didn't changed - they just bot-answer "use phone, we don't give items back" :P

Why would you not want a smartphone..

Phone bills and I find smartphones awful, weak, and not things I would have uses for. That money I save can go towards a GTX 1070 or 1080.

I've only found one or two things to use my smartphone for that I couldn't do with a regular phone. Problem is they don't sell many regular phones anymore...

Huh >_> I thought PhoneBills only work to those who buy with Internet+Landline Phone. I guess its only the west. Since we dont even need phonebills on mobile besides Sim Chips where we can load up anytime.

My parents forced me to get that garbage. Can't play any games(the absolute death of all entertainment doesn't count), costs way too much to support, and I only ever use it to text people--Why the hell don't we all just text each other over the internet, buy a real computer(even a dang CROMEBOOK is more useful than a smartphone) and play 2008 flash games? Outdoes the function of any smartphone I've seen.

Same reason I don't have a smartphone.
I use alarm, memos, notes, text, calling and basically that's it. I don't say that google, or gmail wouldn't be nice on my phone, but most of the phones cost way more than it's worth to me to be able to use it every few weeks.

It's Valve's issue, not ours. I'm good with email Authentication, if they have it, and could ever give you a choice between email confirmation and Steam Authenticator

Email Auth. have one problem - whole access to Steam is on one PC. One phisher and your whole inventory is gone.

With phone you generally need to be physically mugged to lose it.

Yeah, that's why for advanced PC users (who are aware of phishers and baiters), you have the choice of using phone or email, if they ever have email auth.

And how will check if someone is Advanced User?

Or you hope stupid people will inconvince themselves and not use it?

A warning window might work stating the risks. But I see what you mean. Guess Mobile Auth has more advantages than disadvantages. Only mugging or misplacing takes it away.

because it's cheaper for valve to make an app instead of getting more capable employees in customer support.

You can use WinAuth: a steam mobile emulation for Windows computer.

For the same reason that religion forces you to do stuff without telling you the reason, because they know what's best for you.

Why not use one of the many free (yes free!) alternatives to steam app on smartphone.
Desktop authenticator, emulators, winauth, etc.

Valve is trying to keep the marketplace more secure against tampering, keep people from getting their account stolen etc.
Complaining about it really doesn't help much since a large amount of people needed this security forced upon them to prevent thousands of support-tickets about scam-problems etc. As far as I can tell they do have the reason for it written down in enough places, so it shouldn't be a mystery either.

Yes, I know...blacklists for me will be incoming. sigh.

Dont have smartphone, see no reason to have one besides the one the company gave me and I wont use it with steam, since its not mine.

WinAuth ftw.
