Not fond of Ubisoft, but Uplay has worked better than stem as of late.

Have to agree, routine maintenance I get but it does seem a tad more than that and Valve don't seem very good with communicating what the problem is even after events. :(

Yeah, they could not even bother giving a response to what actually happened at Christmas through any of their own channels. Can't say I'm particularly happy with Valve right now.

I think Valve only gave a response to Kotaku? Which I never actually looked up because by that point several youtubers had explained what actually happened and did so extremely well.
Can't fault people for being unhappy with services that quite simply aren't there.

Comment has been collapsed.

The source I found quoted PC gamer, though it's possible that PC gamer quoted Kotaku. And the quote from Valve was very evasive, and not entirely honest about the scope of the issue. Issues like this make me far more prone to use other services, like GOG or Origin (apart from some questionable DLC, EA has really not done anything big that annoys me as of late).

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

They all seem quote each other, I wouldn't know what the actual source is.
I swear every Valve says and does is evasive, very closed off from everything and then, wham, all of a sudden, some big thing happens.
For some to use other services for others it will just be straight up pirating. I stopped buying things direct from steam a long while back, just floating on what money market transactions give, alternative stores and bundles. However, I think people who do this are still in a minority.
GOG is great though. :)

Steam is not DRM. The Steam API includes DRM functions and publishers can choose to use them.

99% of the catalog use that, so..

Tell me a popular game on Steam that you can store on an usb and then you can play on another PC without Internet and Steam client.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

You certainly have a point, although with the mass of indie and shovelware currently on sale, I don't think 99% is an accurate figure.

I am not in denial, most games use DRM features from Steam, certainly all the big ones. However, I find it very unintrusive and harmless and completely acceptable. Don't think I am a fan of DRM in general, far from it. What I said only applies to Steam.

What does it make Steam then? DRM-free heaven? :D Come on let's not fool ourselves, Steam is a DRM. Yet I own 2k games on it and I won't stop using it.

Though I don't care about DRM, I almost use every platform on PC. Origin, b.net, Uplay, GamersGate (which also uses DRM on their downloaders). and DRM-free stores like GOG and Humble Bundle. However I don't understand ppl who hate DRM so much, they don't even play their favourite games like Mass Effect 3 on Origin, yet they love Steam and defend it in every possible way :)

and I'll tell you a personal memory, between 2008 and 2010, I was living in an university dorm. They had a hardware firewall and only port 80 (classic http) and some of popular ports for UDP/TCP connections could be used. Even if I had 100mbit Internet, I couldn't login and play the games I own within this time period since UDP ports required for Steam were blocked. I had DRM-FREE dosbox games on Steam but I couldn't login and download them :DDDDD

So please do not tell me Steam is not a DRM.

1 DRM or 3 DRM's don't change anything imho. DRM is DRM, and if you're boycotting DRM's then you're also boycotting Steam.

I don't use origin or uplay, so I don't know about them, but with the DRM steam also offers the community and discussions boards, plus an easy way to track achievements and there's the trading cards, etc. so it's a balance, the DRM is a bit of a negative, but there are also positives to steam. Btw, personally I couldn't care less about the DRM, steam lets me play my games on different machines without having to carry around the cds, that's probably the biggest incentive for me.

U want all your achievements, screenshots ... to be on one community. actually I love Ubisoft games buy I never bought one of their games( I use pirated copies). because I like to have Ubi games badges on steam and at the same time, I want to have Uplay's new advantages like the points U can gather and Use them to get some Wallpapers or even buy DLCs

Exactly my thought. I get that people would like to have their games just on one platform, but U-Play is not as bad as many people want us to think it is.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It just.... is. Out of the big three it's the worst, but on the other hand Steam is horribly bloated. I prefer the much lighter and compact Origin (superb customer support and prices that match my country, rather than the horrible 1$=1€ - even at -50% off Steam games are always more expensive than full-priced boxed copies I could get)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Agreed. Origin is pretty good. But steam provides more info about the games you own, which just makes it a bit better (and of course the steam workshop) for me.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

To be honest the only functionality Steam offers that I use is the ability to download your games from their servers and have a batch of icons in one tab of one app. It's a gigantic shelf and nothing more.

I prefer buying boxed copies, but now almost all of them have a Steam key inside them and a token DVD so you can save x*4.5gb of bandwith, and then redownload everything because of the mandatory Day 1 patch.

Except MGSV. Fuck MGSV. It had only one thing on the disc. Steam installer.

Comment has been collapsed.

Lol, that's pretty bad. But I use more stuff on steam. Achievements are easier to track, I really like the card drops and it is usefull that everything is one place (although you could also do this with boxed stuff by making a map on the desktop). Now I think about it, it is indeed not much. Although joining your friends in game is a bit easier (for most games).

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

While I don't care about achievements (anymore), the cards are indeed nice. I've bought several games already from card-funds only. Shadow Warrior, KOTOR2, and I think a few smaller games.

I just use them to get badges (also giving me backgrounds and emoticons) and steam levels. I personally don't care too much about getting all achievements in a game, but it still is fun to go after some. It actually adds something to a game (if they are not too blend that is).

I would - but i don't care enough for Ubishyte games to join - i'd rather choose
to never play them, heck i hadn't even bothered in the past to pirate their games.

Raged myself when i fell for a 1.8$ (ru-price) FC3 back in the day ... i had read the warning which i had not understood :D
and no one would exactly know what that meant, until they fell for it (unless they'd been using uplay before). Had expected
there to be a login > which you use once and can access their ubi-shyte through that login ... but having an entire additional
DRM only for 1-2 game ... felt literally like a betrayal, as one expects something bought on steam to be on steam.

Simple example > you go to Subways pay them for a Pizza-Hut-Pizza they offer and those dogs show you the way out, to get
your ordered grub at Pizza-Hut. This betrayal is what makes people furious - valve pulling a Money-Grub-360 over the loyalty
and choice the Steam-DRM users, by selling them out to Ubi-DRM. (lol)

Good for those who are OK with it or don't understand the implications. :D

Why only UPlay? Rockstar and Square Enix tend to require third party registration/DRM too, and EA in some cases (most notably if they sell Bioware games outside Origin… but maybe even the Origin versions need the Bioware account).
Not to mention the craze of requiring perpetually being online all the time to even play SP, like Square did it and Blizzard loves to lock their games. This stupidity comes and goes for over a decade now, and they never learn that people hate it. The only reason Blizzard players tolerate it is because they have been "Apple-ised" to be fanatics loving every shit stuck down their throats since 1999.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

But AFAIK having a bioware account log in does not need you to have another program running while you play the game, you already have steam running in the background. That is the difference for me.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

True, it just needs another account. In that sense GfWL was like that too, even if it was running another DRM in the background (or, well, sometimes in the foreground when the log-in window popped up no matter what you configured).

diablo 3 requires users to be always online because of the drop system, so it's perfectly valid.
no need to treat their users like idiots because you don't understand how it works.

it's very different to the crap that ubisoft puts in their games like heroes 6, which could be played offline without issues.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

shrugs Non-MMO looters managed to have a working drop system in offline mode too. And I really don't understand all the hubbub about the explanation of it being an anti-cheat measure… in a PvE game that only supports SP or small co-op teams. The loot system excuse still sounds like that: an excuse.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

it's not an excuse. diablo 3 has leaderboards and they will be meaningless if people can cheat items and levels.

i don't care about leaderboards or comparing my drops with other people, but a lot of people do and they like the challenge leaderboards offer.

Which is what I do.
They argument at the beginning was, that it would make piracy harder by binding games to accounts.... but steam does that already. so I don't want, and shouldn't need, to have a second drm layer on top. I also have stopped buying and playing, cause I don't pirate games, Blizzard and those Square games that require an account there.
I tried to avoid steam for as long as possible, but caved when it became almost mandatory... but I'll refuse to use even more.
