Play 1 match during QuakeCon weekend (August 7-9) to unlock all champions.
As far as the game itself is concerned, it is pretty fun but deserves a lot of the criticism it's received. I grew up playing arena shooters like Quake 3 Arena, Unreal Tournament and others so I was really looking forward to Quake Champions. Unfortunately, the studio that made the game was not the most competent and the engine has its share of performance issues. If you don't have a fairly beefy pc you may not get the FPS needed for a fast paced competitive shooter like Quake. Also, the champion abilities IMO were just pandering to the hero shooter trend and take away from the core gameplay, although to be fair they have balanced them out now so they're less of an issue.
The main interface is not good, straight up you see all their in game store stuff and lootboxes, luckily it's only cosmetic stuff buy still, Quake, really? My biggest gripe is that there's no server browser and the playerbase has declined, so you have to queue up for matches which sometimes takes a little while even between matches which is unacceptable for this type of game. If they'd just add dedicated servers and a server browser I would recommend this game to everyone. Regardless, it's still fun to play if you have a decent PC and enjoy fast paced, item based shooters, which unfortunately is a declining genre.
Anyhow, for free you can't go wrong trying it out and picking up all the champions this weekend while you're at it. If you're into Arena FPS, I also recommend checking out Diabotical which is not out yet but seems like it will be pretty cool.
