Does it freeze while you're trying to navigate through the client, or just randomly while you're playing and it crashes during gameplay?

i woudl run a benckmark/preformace test on your system, see how it is behaving in general, it may not be steam thats the problem, but the program that is highlighting them.

Maybe it's your computer. I also have issues like this on my laptop because it's very slow and it sucks balls.

Are you getting any artifacts on-screen? When Steam crashes, does it give you an error message?

I find it funny that the first thing people say is to run things like chkdsk...

...first thing should be to consult the event logs in case there is anything funny seen in. Then check your system memory (for example memtest86) next you probably should read up on how to use "Driver Verifier" which could help you to generate a bluescreen with a memory dump you can analyse using the Microsoft Debug tools.

I wouldn't jump ahead and install/re-install a lot of things which may or may not help or even make things worse.
