alright, thanks. Closing now unless people just want to talk about the game.

Err, it runs fine on Windows 7, and those are not the system requirements. It's certainly worth $2.50, but it's not quite as good as Deadly Shadows.

It's amazing! Any and all fans of stealth games should(/must!) play it.
But get it from GoG, that way you know you get good stuff.

I would so get it on GoG, but I literally have $2.58 in free spending money right now, which is why this sale appealed so much :/

Well, then I recommend you ask on the gamersgate forums if anyone has had any problem with their version. Because the Dark Engine doesn't usually get along with modern computers at all.

It's terrific, you REALLY lose out running it on Win7 though. So much Of Thief's experience was built around it's terrific sound mechanics, still amongst the best positional audio effects I've ever seen from a game.
Alas, Vista onwards has largely neutered that.
It is possible to get it running under Win7 but it's picky and not exactly simple.
GOG.com tips for Thief on Win7
IMO Thief 2 > Thief > Thief: Deadly Shadows

"Thief 2 > Thief > Thief: Deadly Shadows"
I couldn't agree more.
About the sound mechanics, I miss my old Soundblaster Live! performance with W98SE :'(

You can play both Thief 1 and 2 fine on WIndows 7 if you purchase them from GOG.com. Otherwise you need to change the processor affinity everytime you run the game. Highly highly recommended gaming from the Golden Era.

I THINK the Good Old Games (GOG.com) version of Thief: the Dark Project (a.k.a. Thief 1) will work on Windows 7. I am very doubtful the GamersGate version will.

Man you people must think GoG are wizards or something. You don't need to change the process affinity everytime. There have been tweaks and easily accessible fixes that have fixed Thief and the other games using its' engine for years now. It wasn't like GoG fixed these issues, as they even sticky links like this: http://www.gog.com/en/forum/thief_series/tgfix_widescreen_resolutions_fixedimproved_graphics_etc/page1 that link to the fix, and websites like Rockpapershotgun have to run news stories on how to get the GoG version to run. The solution? The same thing everyone's been doing for years. I mean, there's a reason the front page of GoG's thief forums is overwhelmed with threads from people having technical issues.
Here's what I had to do to get the GG version running:
Install that fix. Manually copy the movies folder from the downloader to the Thief game folder. The end.

Thanks. That made me remember that I never managed to run Deadly Shadows, so I looked it up now and it seems that it should be reasonably easy to do. Not that I can see myself getting to that any time soon. I have enough games that play without problem that I don't play.

Thief: The Dark project is $2.50 on GamersGate right now, and I'm a little iffy because of how old it is, so a few questions:
1) Is it worth it?
2) Is it better/worse/as good as Deadly Shadows?
3) Will it run on Windows 7?
