So I have a question ;) I have Witcher 3, currently playing through NewGame+, but yesterday I managed to get Blood and Wine Expansion crazy cheap. The problem is I don't have Hearths of Stone DLC. And here comes my question. Is it necessary to play through HoS before playing B'n'W or will I miss a lot of story, context etc by playing B'n'W first? I'm thinking of getting HoS but as there is no sale for it surrently I'd rather wait with it till Summer Sale. So if I can play B'n'W first I'd do so and then play HoS when I get it at syummer sale, otherwise will have to wait for playing any of additional content until Summer Sale.

Thanks for your help :>

Will I miss a lot if I play Blood and Wine before playing Hearts of Stone?(Poll Requires Games to Vote)

Yes. Don't play B'n'W until you purchase and play HoS.
No. You can freely play B'n'W now and play through HoS later.

The stories are all separate, though I think the level scaling and difficulty is tuned to play Base game -> Hearts of Stone -> Blood and Wine.

While I'm still playing the base game myself, I think you'll end up being under-leveled by trying to go through blood and wine before HoS.

thanks for your input :>

I may try it then, because my way of playing base game (almost 100%ing it, didn't manage to 100% because of bugged nilfgaard camp storyline I couldn't continue, but that's it) i finished base game overleveled so may check if I will be able to survive in B'n'W :>

Fair enough. As long as your level is high enough, there shouldn't be any issue if you play Blood and Wine first, though perhaps HoS might end up being too easy later on. Then again, you could just NG+ if necessary :p

as I've just learnt they added an option recently to boost level of enemies in lower level areas (they still give you ower level XP and loot thou) so you can play lower level areas you missed and still having a fun challenging gameplay :>

I guess I was too focused on seeing Roach's butthole every time I go for a ride ;_;

Hearts of Stone has nothing to do with Blood and Wine, so the order doesn't matter. But get that dlc too, because it's awesome.

I intend to, but when it goes on sale ;) 10Eur now would be more than what I paid for Blood and Wine, which is supposed to be much biger one ;p

You have won so many good games here and you also didn't have to pay anything for this awesome dlc? I hate you so much, Mullins. >:( xD Nice dance, by the way. :P

I paid a little less than 42PLN so around 9.5 EUR :> That's why I decided to get it even without having HoS :>

I have european prices for most of things as well, even if living in coubntry where we earn 1/3rd of western europe salaries ;) I got a ROW key for this expansion from a cheaper region ;)

CDPR doesn't region lock their games ;) gifts are forced to be locked by Steam currently, but whether they key is going to be locked or not is purely up to publisher ;)

wait, so a Witcher 3 key from anywhere in the world will work anywhere in the world? Even Russia?

Permalink

base game had RU version (which was unusual for CDPR) but you could for example buy Indian version which was 65-70% cheaper and ROW, but as for Blood and Wine, as you can see here: https://steamdb.info/app/378648/subs/ there are no region locked separate keys for B&W :>

because there is no need to tell everyone about each and every separate game (considering we have thousands of games on Steam) when anyone can check all games he's intrested in easilly using SteamBD :>

I sadly haven't played HoS yet (will get in a month or so, I need a break from TW3 anyway), but B&W took me ~25h. Pretty sure that I managed to explore most of all the available content.

oh, so you say you actually played B&W without problems without owning a HoS? Then thanks a lot! That's exactly the answer I was looking for :>

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yup, got no problems. I^v^I But remember that B&W likes to reference things you did in the base game (like which ending you've got or with whom did you end up with).
Also, did you read the books? Because even though basic knowledge about them isn't maybe necessary, it certainly enhances the experience, especially in the case of this particular DLC.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I did read the boks ;) like a 13 times ;p On my oral graduation exam from polish language I was preparing presentation on comparing Witcher series to polish and western fantasy authors ;) So knowledge of lore is not a problem (and yeah, I get what you mean by saying that they enhance experience ;) When I first played through W3 and heard Priscilla's song I crield lie a little baby, for someone not knowing the books it would be just a nice song ;))

i'm currently playing both (i like to jump between quests). you will miss some bonus from hearts of stone, like runewords, which are awesome.
the first dlc isn't required or linked to blood and whine, but it needs a lower level so most quests and enemies will be weaker once you beat b&w.

I don't really care, I play mostly for story and exploration and have no problem with playing even grey quests just for story and lore ;)

thanks :>

Wouldn't the new feature with scaling enemies help with being overpowered after B&W? I haven't actually tried it out so just asking

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

it just makes enemies stronger, and it doesn't exactly scale with you, it just boosts them. of course you still get xp and items based on their level, it's pretty useless.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

depends how you look at it. Maybe you just want to revisit some lower level areas to finish some quests you missed but want some actual combat challenge as well, because if you were to run around oneshotting everything around for few hours while doing these low level quests you'd get bored? From what I understand the feature is not made so you could grind for better loot/XP but to provide you a gameplay challenge if you desire it no matter the area and level it waqs designed for.

Haven't finished Blood and Wine yet but it's supposed to be "the end" of Geralt's story, so it could be a little weird to continue on in HoS after that

You need level ~38 to have decent time in Blood&Wine. Unless you play on normal which i guess lowers level.

if it helps anything the game is very well optimised and you can run it waaaay below minimum specs. I'm playing it on old outdated system (i5 650 3,2GHz, 10 Gb RAM, HD 6850 1Gb) and it runs fine on low settings :>

You can get it on even much much older machines if you're dedicated to it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vrJ330NGjCU

You can play B&W without having played Hearts of Stone, of course.
Either way, it feels like Blood and Wine was intended to be played after the main story, because of the final arc and because of the level requirement.

HoS ends in a relatively nice way, however BnW ends the Witcher 3 as a whole (i don't feel like playing the game anymore).
But after a long time, when you crave for more Witcher 3, you will still have HoS to look out for so everything is good. Have fun :)

If I could I would, the thing is to play HoS right now I would have to pay 10 EUR for it, while I can play B'n'W right away (which I got cheaper than 10EUR I'd have to pay for HoS ;p), to play HoS b4 B'n'W I'd have to wait 2-4 weeks depending how will this Summer Sale working (will we have daily deals and I have to wait for Witcher deal, or do we get all sales since day 1)

I just finished B&W yesterday.

Story-wise - you miss nothing, but I wouldn't recommend starting B&W before at least level 39, if you don't want to be annoyed by being underleveled for most tasks.

Also those Gwent cards from HoS might be really useful in B&W... :3

I ended up base game before starting New Game + on lvl 37, almost 38 - so maybe 1 lvl gap would not be that much ;p

As for gwent there is now a bug in game - in patch they forgot to remove dev command - hitting O in Gwent match gives you free decoy cards and you can do so as long as you wish :>
