you do realize steam trading is a zero sum (at best) system, you may make out via trading but obviously some people aren't...to get ahead you basically have to rip off desperate/ignorant people
i also don't really see how it's truly a different payment option unless you start solely from tf2/dota 2 items (otherwise at some point you had to use some payment option to get a starting inventory), and from what I can tell, trading is time consuming...time lost probably doesn't make up for the money you save if you get lucky enough to get a good trade
but this is all an aside, the trading culture/community is cancerous to the steam community in general, and that's the reason I really dislike it, as a result of the trade (and gift) feature we have scammers, people ripping anyone they can off, beggars, etc. also accounts for everyone looking at games as a form of currency, who cares if a game is good or not, if it's worth $1 no one cares about it. general greediness is what really upsets me the most though :|

I don't see how its scamming anyone or ripping off anyone unless you are really dumb and don't know the prices.
I can buy a game full price on steam for $35 bucks.. or I can go to a russian trader(a good friend of mine) or even a trader that isn't a friend of mine and from a diff country I can usually get said game as a giftable copy for about $20 - $15 that is because some countries steam has a lot lower selling price then in our country. Some places the dollar is worth more and some places it isn't. I have a friend who when I translate what they pay in steam store for a $49.99 game it ends up being $64.99 our price.

ah I didn't know you meant that (that = taking advantage of regional prices), even that I'm not overly fond of, and in a sense it's even worse than what I was thinking of, you're exploiting regional prices to get games cheaper than what you're supposed to, what's the point of even buying the game at that point? might as well just pirate the game, since you don't care about supporting the developer very much
"Apparently I have to make myself 100% clear all the time." well in my defense your post was pretty vague as there are many aspects to steam trading, also the word trade is fairly ambiguous with a lot of meanings, one of which is the exchange of items without the payment of money, which is sort of what I assumed Valve meant when they named the feature "Steam Trading"

It's against the Steam TOS to sell games, so, no, it's not "legit" as you say, which in fact is part of my point, if you're willing to jump through hoops and not play by the rules, why even bother paying at all...yeah it's better to give the devs some money, I'm not saying it's better for the devs if you buy the game through a russian rather than pirate it, I'm just flabbergasted that people even bother paying money at all when they obviously have so little care for supporting the devs (I guess it's just because they want steam achievements and stuff like that?)
Comment has been collapsed.
It is not against the rules to sell a copy of a game that is tradable.. Where do you hear these things?!?!?... Anyway, on subject again. It is only against the Terms of Service(ToS) to sell your account or share your account for the use of making money. Which, if found out by Steam will get you permanently banned. That is against the ToS but selling a tradable copy that you bought or they bought is not against the rules.

I got my game in Steam, with achievements and features, and they got my money. It's a win-win.
If they think cross-region trading is do harm to them, they should region lock all games. Unless that happens, cross-region trading will still exist.

I don't get something about your first con... Origin's store tab (from the program) IS a web page, so is Steam community in the Steam program's tab, not sure why you'd want them in a diferent interface, "integrated"... that'll add extra and pointless work to staff IMO.
And about 4th con: Steam can't know how the redistributables check if they're installed or not and it just runs them, DirectX does check if it's already installed and finishes faster, unlike other redists... so, it's not really their fault because stuff requires other stuff, be glad they automatically run it so you're not puzzled why your game doesn't work.
And I want to add a few cons of myself:
But yeah, Steam is pretty awesome nethertheless.

It doesn't always work, I had to manually delete a file in order for it to redownload it because it wasan't aware that the file was corrupt or old or whatever it was that it crashed the level (it was the level file itself, for Red Faction Armaggeddon)...
So for me it's faster to just redownload the thing, but it should be improved to help people that can't redownload...
Oh and not to mention that if you start file integrity check, entire program declines to do anything else, not even chat, it's so annoying and glitchy if you try to open the rightclick menu from the taskbar or something, it remains stuck on screen :/
So yeah, file integrity check is pretty crappy atm.

for me move pro#4 to the cons list and con #1 to the pros
integrated stores...how hard is it to open a website and keep a client slimmed down as much as possible? why do people always want stores packed in with their game launcher? how often are you buying vs playing? (I am actually asking because I never understood this) (also I'm pretty sure steam has one?)
chat and community in my client...no. if I want those I'll open those. I don't need aim open in the background whenever I play civ. I hate websites with facebook connect and google+ too, and twitter "Share this" stuff. they just feel like more of the same in app. I'm fine with them on the websites but these things have their place and should stay there imo.
Comment has been collapsed.
Covered the integrated store way below..or above..depending on if you have steamgifts+
Comment has been collapsed.
pro...staemworks mods, updates (in theory, but I must also list this as a con because I have no choice in the matter which gets annoying), library all in one place( ex: for easy reinstalling if changing computers ect), achievements(fun when done right not as epeen), and I suppose its invasive overly connected nature makes multiplayer easy, and it often has sales(so it can take over the market, once its feeling comfortable in its size/power I'm sure those will dwindle) (and steamgifts i guess counts as a pro since I like the forum, but that wasn't their doing so doesn't count)
cons...everything else. the chat stuff which i never use because I always keep it set to offline because I am forced to connect to it when I connect to a game and don't wish to be bothered if I forget to turn it off, unless its multiplayer I neither need or want a friends lists integrated with my game for no reason, I don't need/want my play time tracked(and so I almost solely play offline mode), badges and cards are stupid, I don't like the store ads whenever i close a game, I hate that I can't play offline for more than a month before reconnecting online, I hate how even if I've installed the game I must play my first time online before I can use it offline, I hate the "americans can't own land in mexico" type of thing where I only really have a license that can be revoked rather than a game, if I want a store I'll go to the website, its so damned pervasive I can hardly buy a game without this account, having to open the client to play a game annoys me, steam support is a lie, updates and client updates cannot be avoided or delayed(I can disable them on an individual per game basis but there should be a blanket option), that I apparently don't get a cd key until I install the game the first time and they've sold games in the past without a stock of these so you have to wait with no warning that this was out of stock at the time, (can't view my cd key without the game installed even if its been installed previously(admittedly only ever been an issue with mount and blade which I decided to use off steam to be more comparable with mods so likely doesn't count)) (and I dislike the "appleish" fanatical fanboy cult thing it gets but that may not be fair to lay at steam's feet)
overall it just comes across like google+ infected my nintendo

edit- double that because I also found the disable community overlay checkbox, which was obvious enough that I must have seen once when I first set up steam, but forgotten about when I switched computers s that solves another con from my list.
(also I think I had seen this tickbox as well but didn't know what it meant, I thought that was for "tell me about updates to my games" sort of thing rather than tied to the ads.)

No, it will only remove the pop-up that tells you that your game has a new DLC's or a big update (think of holiday updates for many games).

I like Family Sharing a lot actually... seeing what I have of SteamBox.. I hate the controller.. looks hard to use and not practical.. Inventive but not practical. as far as SteamOS.. dislike completely. its a dumbed down version of Steam Client that takes up about 1000% more space.

Cons: I dunno, I like Steam a lot and don't really have any serious problems with it. Mostly I guess the web browser sucks, which is only relevant when trying to shop within the actual client or trying to browse the web without alt+tabbing (I like to do that on loading screens :P). I think a lot of the complaints people have are overreactions along the lines of "OMG ITS DRM, U GAIZ ARE SHEEPLE DOWN WIT GABEN UP WIT GOG". An integrated Can You Run It would be great though.
Pros: I like the library. I refused to buy anything without a hard copy for a loooong time because I like collections. I like seeing all the games I have sitting on my shelves looking cool. With Steam, I not only have my collection, but can show it off to other people without having to clean up my house. I personally see nothing morally wrong with pirating games, and without Steam would probably be doing so, simply because I've always felt that in cases when I could either buy or pirate, I was paying for the added bonus of having all the nice physical things.
The "community" stuff is nice. Being able to see who is online, see who has the same games you do, etc. is great when you're looking for others to play with and don't feel like testing your luck in a random match. It also helps with purchases. "Do any of my friends play this game?"
The trading system is wonderful. Sure, some resellers are probably millionaires by now but they're getting games to people who either couldn't otherwise afford them or are like me and would probably just pirate them given different circumstances. Plus, playing video games to buy more video games is pretty much the best way you could ever spend your free time, am I right? :P Honestly I worry that the current system is too good to last but I hope there are others like me who would likely not buy Steam games if they couldn't use ingame currency to do so.
Even without the trading system though, the prices are much better than anything you can get from a brick and mortar store, especially factoring in the promos all over the internet and pay what you want bundles.

Okay, I have another suggestion. When you buy a Game on Steam you can pay a bit extra(of course completely optional) to purchase a Retail CD that comes with a Manual and have it sent to the address on file/or credit/debt card on file. What do you all think?
Comment has been collapsed.
I think it defeats the purpose of digital distribution and the expenses for manufacturing a retail medium will be too big for an optional feature not many people will use.
P.S. I'd rather Steam could sell retail collector's editions worldwide.

Con: Store search, Partial/Full controller support. Make this just one "Controller Support" category and have it listed on the game if I can use a controller to play it without downloading bullshit like Joy2Key. As it stands, it's a huge pain in the ass to search for games that support a controller.

Add more currencies for payment.
More responsive support, transparency in communications.
Fix Backup feature.
Maybe a revamp/cleanup of the community section, making it a bit more intuitive and less cluttered (while i don't usually check it, everytime i do it's a clusterfuck of information).

Also, needs more way to pay.. I think we have 6 methods? i'd love to pay-by-phone or use Amazon Payments..especially considering I always seem to collect Amazon giftcards from family or co-workers.

I have discovered biggest con when I realized the future of my Steam account. It will get out of date sometimes or it will shut down eventualy, so what am I going to do with it? Now I have 3222$ worth account, do I have to just throw it away and forget about all that money I spent?

Do you mean... it's likely they will do that, or did they officially said that ?

Yeah, same question. Is it from a legit source or your imagination?

Doubtful Steam will release DRM free versions.. nor are they legally obligated too. You license the games not buy them. If you want to buy them get a retail disc.. other than that. All you can hope for is if Steam EVER does shutdown that the publishers will all have mercy on our souls and give us redeemable CD-keys for there stores.. the only hope I have is that all my ubisoft games will still work as they are tied to U-Play store and not steams even though I bought them through steam.
Comment has been collapsed.
"You license the games not buy them. If you want to buy them get a retail disc"
Even when you purchase a retail disc, you are still only effectively purchasing a single license. It just happens to include a provisional copy of the associated game.
Comment has been collapsed.
Steam is the biggest digital distribution platform at the moment, so currently it has the best lifespan of them all. With the way that videogame DRM is heading, you're unlikely to avoid online distribution/DRM things completely, and it's a shared con that they all face.
So it's almost more of a pro than a con, I think.

Very bad idea. Steam is a Digital store, so a retail is against the concept of the store.
7: The features of "Enhanced" Steam in Steam Client showing the lowest price..users...etc..
Some of the features in enhanced Steam are great, but the price related things are and will remain fan made. Valve is not going to say to you "hey look, in GOG the price is cheaper, buy from them and not for me"... plain illogic.

@#6: Okay, you must of missed the part where I said that "FOR THE PEOPLE WHO WANT A RETAIL DISC & IT WOULD BE COMPLETELY OPTIONAL"
@#7: You missed the part of where I said if Steam did not want to implement the price part of enhanced steam(as I wouldn't expect them too, why advertise for others?) they should make the steam client able to have mods..not just themes/skins..which I wrote right beneath number 7.

Pro's:
Achievement and Cards systems.
Chat with your friends, even while playing.
All your games in one place, and very easy to install.
Con's:
Lose the DRM, Steam! The option to back up what I've paid for would be great.
Offline mode is a ^@$#%# to set up properly and if you don't have internet to start with one day, forget about it.
Quite a bit of our owned games don't even show up, say for sync lists. This is especially true of most DLC.
Suggestions:
How about we're able to stream the soundtracks we own on Steam, instead of only being able to download them?
About your mentioned suggestion, pertaining to physical content such as discs, printed manuals, etc. I think that's a great idea, however I think that should be included in the price of the games. You pay $60 for a brand new game, what do you have to show for it? That's a lot of money.
If I think of more later I'll edit. :)

I basically only got Steam to play Dota 2 when it was in Beta, so for me it was something I just had to have in order to play it, and only make use of some things just because it's there. I have, however come to like a lot of the features it provides. So with that in mind, here are my personal pros and cons:
Pros:
In-game overlay: I use it mostly for the chat (the steam chat has replaced any other messenger I've used in the past because of this), but it's also really useful for game guides. Also, screenshots are integrated, so I can take screens
Games with the Friends system integrated: Being able to invite a friend to a party through the steam Friends system is really convenient.
Game library: I love the fact that I can add all the non-steam games I have installed on my PC to my Steam library, so I can have everything in one place. Plus, I get to use the ingame overlay in them as well when I play them.
Steamworks, I like that Steam has a system in place that encourages community-made mods.
Ingame item drops: The items enrich the game, the ability to sell them on the market allows you to play a game and sell items from it in order to buy other games. What better could there be?
Integrated store and community pages: You seem to misunderstand the term 'integrated', the store is integrated because it opens in the client, and the styling/colours match that of the client itself. Honestly, to have it any other way wouldn't make any sense. A whole lot of extra coding for what exactly? The only thing they could do is possibly improve the load speeds, but then again it loads a lot faster for me than the iTunes store through iTunes, not sure if that's just my issue though.
Cons:
Can't add non-Steam games to a public library: The ability to add CD-keys is rather misleading, I have a number of hard-copy games (available on Steam) which I have tried to add to Steam and none of the CD-keys worked, yet I was able to add one of my EA games to Origin with no issues. I know now that hard copies of games have to give you a key specifically for Steam, but when I joined Steam, there was no way of knowing that and nowhere in their FAQ did it say that. It's not a big issue, but I would like to have the all games that I own on my Steam account instead of having to buy them again just to have it on Steam. I don't mind if I had to forfeit auto-updates or being able to download the game whenever I want, I just want the game on Steam, preferrably with my hours played.
Steam levels rely too much on spending money on Steam: Once you've got the community ambassador badge, it seems you have to pretty much spend money for any more. The trading card system is a nice idea, but only getting a number of card drops equal to half the total needed to craft a badge when you've actually bought a game is really a dick move. Yes, I know you're eligible for booster packs after you've got all the drops, but I think for a game you bought, you should get drops equal to the amount needed for a set. They're trading cards, so you should be able to trade your duplicates for cards you don't have and make a set. Considering to make a level 5 badge you need 5 sets, I think the current drop amount is terrible.
Steam support: They are far too slow to respond, they need more staff, and at that, more helpful staff. When I first tried to buy games on Steam, Half Life Complete and FF VII were on sale on one of their 'Weekend Deals', I tried to make a payment through the client only to get a message along the lines of 'An Unexpected Error has occured, please try again later or contact Steam support if the problem persists.' So I contacted them about it and they only got back to me about a week later, only to say something like 'try making the purchase through a browser and contact us again if you have a problem with that', not even acknowledging that there is a possible problem with the system in the client. I couldn't make the purchase I wanted because the deal was over and I certainly wasn't going to try purchasing them at full price just to see if it worked through the browser. I encountered the same problem later on trying to buy the Tomb Raider Collection about a month or so later while it was on sale, but tried through a browser and it worked fine, so there's definitely something wrong with the payment system within the client, and it hadn't been fixed. (no idea if it's fixed now, as I go straight to the browser when I want to buy something now)
In response to your cons:
Other than the issues I've had paying for games through the client, as I mentioned above, it makes more sense for it to display the webpage through the client, and it IS integrated. The way it looks, you can hardly tell it's a webpage because it fits in so well with the client, just the browser-like interface at the top gives it away.
I don't see why this is a con, it makes only sense that you need to be online to see the news.
On the page where it asks for your DOB, it tells you that they don't store the data. The client does however seem to remember mine so I don't need to re-enter it every time, of course I have no idea if this happens for everyone.
This is actually something I think is necessary. Every game I can think of that I have installed off Steam runs a direct X installer somewhere during the installation of tha game. As someone before me said, running the Direct X installer is the only supported way to check for a particular version of direct X, and some games use a modified version of it which would need to be installed regardless. The check is only done when you play a game the first time after installing it, and checks to make sure you have all the software components necessary to run the game, so it's really not an issue at all in my opinion.
I don't see why it's complicated, I guess it is set up a little differently than what you might see on a gaming forum, but honestly, it's not hard to figure out. The only issue I've had is removing a user from a blocked list (hit block instead of ignore), but I managed to remove the blocked user after some exploring.
Your suggestions:
I like the CYRI suggestion. I have a PC that'll run pretty much anything I throw at it in high graphics, but it will be useful to those who aren't so lucky. Yes, the publisher's specs aren't always that accurate, but throw in a disclaimer and it'd be a good feature to have.
Covered above. Getting rid of the Pre-game check is a bad idea.
Covered above, it's integrated well in my opinion, and I actually rather dislike Origin's store.
I rather like the idea, but someone before said that it was a tried and failed idea.
I wouldn't personally use it, because I actually like the default, but others might like it.
Kinda defeats the purpose, you can already use the backup system to back your games up to discs (Steam can divide the backup files by CD, DVD or custom sizes), it'd probably be cheaper anyway in many cases to buy the game from a retail store that comes with a Steam key.
I personally only use Enhanced steam to check if the prices in other stores are cheaper, which is certainly not something Valve wants to put into Steam. Other than that, the 'buy wishlist' thing from Enhanced Steam would be neat, also the price per on the multipack games would be nice.
Modding the Steam client I think would be a bad idea. The Steam client handles sensitive information, having mods would open it up to risks. Cosmetic stuff like skins is fine, but allowing people to mod its behavior is a definite no-no.

Dear SteamGifts,
I am looking to start a discussion on the Pro's and Con's of Steam and what Steam could do to change there Con's to make them Pro's. Let me hear your opinion on whats good, whats bad, and what should be added :-D
For Me:
Pro's:
1:Huge Digital Game Store that is unmatched comparing to Origin(not gamefly etc..)
2:Lots of Users
3:SteamWorks
4: Steam Community is finally integrated and part of the Client.
Con's:
1:SteamStore is a webpage and not integrated like Origin's store..
2:Can't view Game News(catched) offline..such as updates.
3:SteamStore seems to never remember you age...even 10,000 times you've used the store.(no idea why this hasn't been fixed yet)
4:Pre-Game check.. Com'on steam.. I've installed DirectX 999,000 times already.. There can't be another update that you haven't installed yet...Oh fine..there you go again. (Yes, I know you can click the x and skip it, but lazy me says no)
5:Steam community,groups,friends-list is WAY to complicated.. not that you can't understand it. But, you have to go through 10,000 steps to get to one place.
Suggestions:
1:Add a "Can I Run it?" that compares the spec's of the game to your spec's
2:Get rid of Pre-game check.. or make it check the version against the online updates and download ONLY if there is a newer update.
3:Make the Steam store integrated like Steam Community or Origin's store.
4:Game Magazines(& subscriptions) Please?
5:A Steam download section for Steam Themes/Skins. Similar to workshop for the Steam Client.
Editx3:
6: Okay, I have another suggestion. When you buy a Game on Steam you can pay a bit extra(of course completely optional) to purchase a Retail CD that comes with a Manual and have it sent to the address on file/or credit/debt card on file. What do you all think?
7: The features of "Enchanced" Steam in Steam Client showing the lowest price..users...etc..
8: Steam Client mods.. incase Steam says no to number 7 so we can just mod it ourselves..
Anyway, that is just my 2 cents.. So, let me hear what your pro's / con's / suggestions are.
EDITx4: For anyone who is to dumb to read. this is a opinion and suggestion thread. Not attack the Original Poster(OP) because you do not like his suggestions. If, you have a better suggestion post it below and explain why.
