I just tried trading with someone for CS:GO keys.
I put the keys up to trade and see an error notification saying because I either:
-Haven't had Steam mobile guard enabled for 7 days (I don't use it)
-Turned off email confirmation (I've never turned this off)

Steam will hold my items for 72 hours.
Is anybody else having this problem? I don't know what to do and it seems to be ruining my ability to buy games from the sale with keys.

You will always have to deal with that if you don't have Steam mobile guard :(

I think you absolutely need to have the Steam Guard enabled? I don't remember though

It only states (quotes):
(me) "has not been using the Mobile Authenticator for 7 days or has turned off trade confirmations"

It's worded in a way that suggests I don't need the mobile authenticator if I have trade confirmations enabled.

The trade confirmation is done through the app

No, you need to use the Mobile authenticator AND have trade confirmation enabled (through the app)

Both you and the person you're trading with need to have Steam Mobile Authentication to remove this escrow feature. Valve decided to implement this to combat trade fraud/scam. The action of a few make it a pain in the butt for everyone else.

That's what I thought but it doesn't seem to be the case... Someone sent me 2 csgo keys a couple of days ago so I could get him a game from the Canadian store. I'm not using the app and I got the keys instantly in my inventory.

That is strange. So it's not applied consistently or the rule is a lot more complicated than I thought.

The guy sent a trade offer instead of inviting me to trade through the chat window... not sure if that makes any difference. Yeah it's weird but I'm not complaining. ;)
Edit: it seems that Zomby2D has the answer see post below

It only apply if you're losing something in the trade. If your side of the trade was empty, then only the other party need to use the authenticator and confirm.

Oh. I didn't remember that part. Thanks for reminding me.

It means you have either not been using the authenticator for 7 days or If you are using it you have turned off confirmations. Doing either 1 of the 2 puts the 72 hour hold on trades.

Traded with a person earlier who regularly offers card trades to me. They don't have the authenticator but they are only held for 24 hours. I think that's because they use email notification + we've been friends for more than 1 year.

Just tried to trade with my alt. account and have to wait 72 hours. The alt account also doesn't have the authenticator, does use email notifications and has been my friend for over a year. No difference as far as I can see yet I have to wait longer on one for some reason. Also, when trading with the alt. I wasn't asked to confirm on my mobile.

I don't believe this. 7 days until I can trade with anybody if they're buying on demand.

I just tried to activate the steam mobile authenticator so I could trade some cards and craft badges. It didn't recognise the codes it sent me by SMS and then completely locked me out of my account and then told me to contact Steam and go through the account recovery process. Which I have just completed, but now I have a total trade block for 7 days because of the account recovery process.

Yay Steam mobile authentication!

I just had to go through a similar problem.
I activated it, then it said I couldn't receive confirmations on this device, only the device the authenticator is on, literally minutes after making that device the mobile authenticator.

So then I had to remove it using the 1 time code they sent me.
The code wasn't recognized.
So I had to remove the authenticator (whichever it believed it to be) using the SMS option
I then had to make my phone the mobile authenticator a second time and it seems to be working now.
What a piece of crap.

It really doesn't give me much faith in this junk as a secure and trustworthy system...

It seems like its intention is really just to discourage trading and to encourage the use of the steam store. At least it feels that way.

Activating this on the say the Steam Sale starts was probably not the greatest move. There's bound to problems with a time-sensitive code when the servers are puking.
