I really enjoy The Long Dark, its a hard core survival game its still in early access, out in the freezing cold where you have to survive. They plan a story mode which I am REALLY excited for too.
If you like horror, The forest is a lot of fun too, has multiplayer, build a base and survive

What kind of Survival ? Per se, I think there are action survival like Dead Rising series, Dead Islands series or State of Decays, another kind of survival have realistic potential like food, water, or something necessary for existence, may be the Long Dark, or Ark, or No Man's Sky, or maybe Rust? You better watch their gameplay on youtube to make sure !

Just stumbled upon The Wild Eight and remembered your thread :) Seems interesting. Yup, I kind of remember some things and forget all the others... and necroing sorry.

Among low budget, indie games I'd recommend Survivalist. For a $5 game I was pleasantly surprised.
