you should get points based on the comments you post on submissions and in the form

Not such a good idea. While SteamGameSales allowed you to rank up by commenting or reviewing, you didn't need to constantly spam unless you needed to rank up. While I don't remember having having to rank up very high to enter in most giveaways, having the point based system configured in that way would only result in tons and tons of unnecessary comments and spam.

I was iffy with this idea when I first heard about it, but it seems to be working great. Awesome job!

sound good to me is a good way to get more giveaways and maintain a fair community of giveaways
but on the other hand if you don't speed money you don't get points u should have more ways to get some points but not better than making give aways

I don't like it because I've been here since the site opened and I still haven't won anything even though I've entered every single giveaway.
Kidding, the point system makes the site legit. But seriously, why the fuck haven't I won a single giveaway yet?

Sounds cool. I might have missed something but how can u get points??

Btw how come new members only get 25?? That seems like a big disadvantage over regular members

Great idea, Just a quick question though.
What if someone creates a load of bogus giveaways for large point games, and you enter a few of them?
Ofc the points are gone if you dont win, but if you win and dont actually get the game.
Maybe return the spent points to the users that entered?
Just thinking out loud.

I have to say, the points system seems to be working great. I've noticed that today many of the more popular giveaways have only around 200 entries instead of 600+.

enjoy the points system but dont enjoy that there are a handful of people always winning. You mods need to put rules in place where they can only win once every 7 days or something, this is bullshit that over 2000 members and the same 5 people keep winning.

quit bitching Sneeches, you've even won once. And all I ever see you doing on these forums is cry like a baby.

shouldnt this be a sticky or on top of the page, in like the menu?

I'm not sure if it is a bug, but today I was at the point cap of 300. I then removed a few entries of mine and now I have 370 points. I do not care if 70 points get taken away from me, I just hope it gets fixed for the people exploiting this bug.

i think it's possibly intended to give people a chance to retreat from giveaways even if they are at the cap. it just wont generate any further points when you hit 300 or higher

and here we have it. that one guy who complains about the change. no matter what change there is, there's always gotta be at least one guy to complain about it

How is it not fair that everyone hypothetically could have the same amount of points (assuming they were to not enter anything) I think there might be a few aspects of the point system you're misunderstanding or something.

I really can't understand how can you disagree, it's fair for everyone.

I think it's a great idea. I just got here and have started with 25 points which means - if I wanted to - I could enter some giveaways immediately (I'm not because I'm saving for an invite code for a friend first). On the other side of the coin, I'm restricted as to what I can enter - I can't go crazy and enter everything, I can't enter the expensive ones and I benefit from all giveaways created which also encourages me to create my own (which I will if I don't blow my Summer Sale budget) - it's pretty much what I suggested back on SGS (sarcasm) back in the early 1950's (/sarcasm)... but 'betterified'. Well done CG and co :)

I like the point system but I agree I would give a "bonus" to people who are producing giveaways.

i think it makes sense to keep people from hoarding games. I would like to maybe see a slight point refund if you do not win a giveaway (%5-25) so winners would be less likely to enter again after an immediate win, while giving losers another chance.

I don't think there is a need for refunds if you win, there should be plenty of points going around as it is.

Really nice! Im totally new here and I must say it ROCKS! :)

Hold back the the points reward until after the game has been awarded and confirmed?
That would require considerably more work to implement however.

That doesn't sound like a bad idea to be honest. Put in some method to verify that the game got to the person who won, and then give the person who had the giveaway 100% of the points value for that specific game? There should be some sort of reward for actually running a giveaway to encourage more people to run it.
I know the idea could mess up with the 300 point cap we have currently. (Example: Someone comes back at the end of their giveaway after a couple days of break and has 290 points, they give out the game and receive 20 points. But due to the cap they'd then lose 10.) Now I'm not sure on how the point system works behind the scenes, but would it be possible to make it so givers receive a slightly different type of point that itself doesn't have a cap? Could have it so regular points are spent before gift points too, so it wouldn't be an accidental punishment to conclude multiple giveaways at a time? I am of course in no way recommending a second more 'elite' currency that would only detract from the community, I don't even think it should be glaringly obvious to someone they even have this second type of point unless they actually point at their point counter or something (set it up so both points are counted together?)

I think it would be better to just have a limit on how many points you collect passively (300 cap still) but an unlimited wallet. So you can have up to 300 points in which you get from doing nothing, but still collect more from creating your own giveaways. This way you can have 500 points for example, of which you earned the max 300 from giveaways created by other people, and 200 from your own personal giveaways.

This is a really, really good idea. I like what you're doing here. Glad to be a member.

Edit: This information is no longer correct, we have lowered the generation to five percent.
EDIT: Point System Now Live
If you check the top right, there's a number in brackets next to Logout, which represents your current points. At the moment, I sent everyone 100, and new users will start with 25. Now, how it works.
When a giveaway is created on the site, every single member gets 10% of that value in points. So, if I started a giveaway at this moment, for a $50 Steam game, everyone would now have an extra 5 points. When you enter a giveaway, you spend these points. If you enter for a game worth $20, you spend 20 points, and you'll see the number next to Logout drop by 20. If you decide to remove your entry while the giveaway is still open, those 20 points are returned. And of course, if you don't have the required number of points, you're unable to enter that giveaway.
At most, you can save up to 300 points. This way, people can't be inactive for months, and then return to thousands of points, entering everything.
Numbers are rounded up, so if someone creates a giveaway for a $1 game, 1/10 = 0.1 points, but that's rounded to 1, so it helps to contribute to everyone.
What do you guys think? Suggestions? I thought we'd try it out for a few days, and see how things are going. In short, this will allow people to choose which 10% of giveaways they would like to enter, giving them better odds for games they're interested in playing.
