I think you have a misunderstanding of what philosophy is. The way we currently do science was developed in philosophy (Karl Popper for example) and deals with how we should run experiments. That you should make predictions and try to falsify your ideas instead of looking for evidence that backs it up. Very practical.

Well, yes, he solved a problem, or at least formalised a solution. But it's still very illustrative of the fallacy of your original statement. Philosophy might give you ways to think about problems, and in that it might help to solve them eventually, but it doesn't solve them directly.
