According to Lunar calendar, it's Chinese New Year as you mentioned and since they had AC Chronicles: China, they saw it as opportunity so that people may purchase other games of the series like Origins/Odyssey. I think the Chronicles games also sold less so they are giving away for good faith and hopefully increase costumers' numbers.

You got backup codes, when you enabled 2FA, use one of them (each can be used only once) to log in and then remove 2FA, so you could get them via email instead. If you haven't saved them when enabling 2FA, then the only way to remove 2FA is thru UBISOFT support.
Edit: But you aren't the only one, my authenticator works for only the first few times and then it stops working along the way for some reason and keeps saying that the code entered is wrong, so i have to get my codes thru email, bummer.

From what i read it isnt free for every region yet, sea region is first and others will follow soon.

ok i manage to grab mine thanks to this guy from Rdit and i used hide.me vpn and changed it to Singapore
"Alright, I've managed to activate it from europe.
Close your browser and preferably clear cache and cookies.
Close your uplay account if it's opened
Use a VPN and set the location to Singapore (there are other eligible countries as well but this one worked for me)
Now you can access the website and click on the "Get it for free before 02/10" button right below the "Add to Cart" button.
The website then will ask if you have uplay installed or not. Click on "Launch Uplay PC"
Browser will ask you if you want to open it, click on "open uplay launcher"
Give it some time for the launcher to start, then it should pop up the game and then you can add it to your library
note: it might not work at once because uplay remembers your last location and I even got an email claiming they detected some suspicious activity"

Uplay has done both Asia-specifc promotions as well as promotions that activated at different times in different timezones, meaning that there's uncertainty as to what a promo is when there's no official announcement made on the matter. This is listed as being part of the same promotion as Assassin's Creed Chronicles (China), which is free everywhere else; Off that, odds are in favor of it reaching us.
More notably, Uplay games seem to tend toward only having the region-specific language and interface settings for the region you activated from, meaning that VPNing may get you a less-readily playable game than if you were to activate the promotion through your own region.
In short, the best course is to just wait a few hours and see if it goes live worldwide and then worry about whether to VPN or not.
The store page for the game says it's free through the 10th, so there's not any rush whatsoever for it.

Other commenters noted that English (and thus presumably also the other core languages listed for the game [Fr, Ger, It, Spa, Dan, Dut, Nor, Swe] ) is a selectable option for the game, so VPNing should be safe, especially given that it's been a day without seeing it pop up in other regions.

Languages available for me (I'm from Italy, EU) are DK, DE, EN, ES, FR, IT, NO, NL, SV; so I guess once you activated the game (no matter how) it just acts as normal...

yoou need a Singapore IP (VPN software better than browser simple extensions); if you still see the CD Key request you don't have the right IP. you should also logout from Ubisoft and UPlay (you'll only need to login again on UPlay once the browser ask to open it). Last but not least if your VPN is working then Ubisoft should send you an email warning about unusual activities on your account (nothing to worry about but you could use it to check the IP and the registered location)
