Wow I have to say that I'm surprised this game is still around. I played it a long time ago, and I remember enjoying it. The biggest thing I wasn't a fan of was that the map felt like it had tons of really dead space. Do you know if still has that or did they end updating it where the world doesn't feel as empty?

No, it should still be the same mess* of a game. They mentioned doing a content and graphic overhaul several times in the past, but have backtracked on it each time, and that's the only thing I've heard about the game getting any kind of meaningful update- well, or rather, not getting one.
According to stats, current peaks of 1500 cross-platform players a day, 800-ish cross-platform average daily players, with 350 average daily players being the portion of which is from Steam. Compare that to a Steam peak of 17k concurrant players, and the fact that the game was already considered largely "dead"** by its fanbase, in terms of server population/activity (as well as due to the fact that updates started getting delayed in 2022 due to "staff shortages"), when the game had twice its current steam population two years back.
In short, the game is clearly never*** going to get an update, it just seems so unlikely for them to overhaul a heavily depopulated 2011 game at this point, especially after they already gave up on doing so several times before.
* Game had an excellent cosmetic/gear system and above-average flight mechanics for the time of release, but pretty much everything else was massively outdated or underdeveloped from the game's initial launch. Terrible, bland, repetitive instanced encounters, severely underdeveloped combat mechanics, horribly underdone bland and empty environments, terrible flow, UI issues, progression confusions, etc.
I think they did improve end-game at one point, at least, so at least there's maybe that? They also added in a survival mode a couple years back and made most content free at one point, but that's all the major changes since release that I'm aware of.
* * Daybreak Games, the publisher of DCU (as well as Everquest I/II, Dungeons & Dragons Online, Lord of the Rings Online, Magic the Gathering: Online, Planetside 2, and probably more), has a habit of leaving games running far longer than most publishers would (I think they even acquire games right as bigger publishers are about to close them to keep them up?), so there's actually a not too bad chance the game'll remain up so long as it remains even minimally profitable.
* * * Game licensing to DC IP apparently doesn't end until 2030, according to one source I found online, so I mean, technically anything is possible.

I played the game back when it first came out outside of Steam, back in like 2011/2012. That's around 12 years ago, so I thought it would be safe to assume that they filled things since then, but figured I would ask still. There's still updated being posted, not a lot, but some. The game for the most part is likely on life support with small updates from a very small dev team. As far as Daybreak/Sony Online Entertainment goes, lets just say I have a pretty decent idea of a lot of behind the scenes things going on there through the years. lol I sure as hell wouldn't want to work there and feel bad for the people who I know/knew that did. I'm not sure who I feel worse for, people who worked at Daybreak or people who worked for Trion.
With regards to the population, the game is cross platform and if I remember correctly it at one point was doing really well on their own client as well as consoles and had a larger pop than steam.

The stats I mentioned WERE crossplatform? :P
I found several sources confirming those numbers for crossplatform, but this site has the easiest to read graphs on it (though no stored listing of past data). Looks like it just updated, though, we've got up to 2000 for today, I guess maybe thanks to the promotion above.

Ah, okay I must have missed it. I'm a little tired atm, my apologies.

It's a genuine pity humans can't hibernate through winter.
Both because winter is objectively terrible*, and because so many of us have so much sleep we need to catch up on..
* Depending on where you live, and how much your local winter climate has the compulsion for making attempts to eradicate humanity.

Thank you for posting that site, I totally forgot about it. I used to use it and had it bookmarked once upon a time. :)

Taken. Thanks for posting, it saved me setting up an account on the site.
