Boy, you gonna need at least $1000 to even start thinking of a laptop that plays games. Plus, not only about the RAM, but how heat is exerted(a laptop is your tower and monitor combined) and the GPU.

Hexcells is a bit like Minesweeper, is a fantastic game, and could run on a laptop. It's been on Steam since February 19, 2014.

Yes, I get the point you were making.

Fine Sweeper is actually quite heavy for a laptop ;) at least mine, old lenovo, which was not designed to play games
FS is lagging so much ... and on 10th level it simply breaks
people don't know how to write games
I know, if I got better machine, I'd be able to play it but ... really, it's just a clone of mine sweeper, why it's so heavy? I don't know

similarly Heroes 3 HD - I can't run it, because my notebook uses Win XP - ok I get it
but it's requirements are also quite high, way too high for a 2D game

Uhm, is there any reason for not building a desktop gaming PC instead?

That's one good reason, but, does the OP need the mobility?

If it has to be a laptop:

I got a fairly good Dell for like 800 with a 4GB Nvidia card.
Doubt you can find something much better for that price.

This one you can get it for under 800,
DELL inspiron 15 7559
RAM:8GB x 1 => The 8GB RAM is one slot so you can easily upgrade it to 16GB whenever you want.
i7-6700Q => 3.5GHz Turbo
Nvidia GTX960m with 4GB VRAM

It's functional if you don't expect to run things at max.
Don't play games on the battery,

Click the link.
You can buy something refurbished or 17' if you want better specs/price.
But that's the one I got for my brother having like 2 days to pick something.
Best of luck.

(thought you were the one asking, my bad)

I was hoping for some recommendations.
Turn around, come back when you have extra $250ish, or when you've decided to buy a desktop instead.

Can you get a laptop that'll run games for $750 or less? Sure you could. But expect the following:
1.) You'll need an external cooling pad.
2.) Battery life while gaming will be nearly non-existent.
3.) You'll have to turn down settings on the vast majority of games, unless they're about ten years old or older.
4.) You'll be lucky to get very computationally-intensive games to run at all. No DayZ for you, unless you're content with low framerates.
5.) It'll be outdated very quickly. Expect it to struggle with games in a couple of years.

For #1, unless the laptop is an ASUS ROG G75"X" series for about $1100+. Keyboard is always cool to the touch because of the large exhaust vents in the front of the laptop(facing away from the user). :3 You are correct for most laptops.

For $750 or less?

My mistake. Laptops at or under $750 will need an external cooling device. Also laptops that exhaust heat from the bottom of the laptop.

simple rule for laptop, for the same spec : laptop -> 2 x pc price, so you want a pc under 375 $, well good luck :S

Design needs powerful hardware, and that is hardly normal office work. Even Adobe products need a ~600 USD machine at minimum.
