Imo, they waste time doing that but they are free to do w/e they want with their lives.

Because they can. I don't see why it bothers people so much, I get bummed when I don't get thanked (especially from the winner)

Because it's generally considered polite to thank people for giving away things for free out of their own pocket.

As for thanking fake giveaways, it's most likely the people saying thanks don't realize they're fake...

It's fine with me. Honestly, I do find it gratuitous, though. I wouldn't/didn't even check how many thanks I got in a giveaway. The most important thanks would be from the winner. If the winner didn't say thanks or was rude, I would be upset, and this happens a lot. I actually think many people are just obsessed with comment ratio.

It's because people want to express their gratitude, but are too lazy to write up a clever response or something interesting. I either do not comment at all, or post something more than a simple thanks. That said, I'm completely indifferent to whether or not people post up "thanks" comments on my giveaways, but I do expect the winner to thank me after I congratulate them.
