I'm giving away a copy of Sunless Sea!

I really love this game and I think the devs are pretty cool people, so I want this game to go to someone who will appreciate it and (hopefully) spread some positive feedback to others.

Obviously there is no way to guarantee that will happen, so the next best option I've thought of is this: to do a whitelist giveaway. In order to get on the whitelist, all you have to do is tell me the following:

  • What makes this game interesting to you?
  • Did you play the free weekend and if so, what did you think of it?
  • What will you name your first captain?

At the very least it will stop bots from entering and maybe we'll get some good discussion about the game too.

Since the giveaway finishes on the 19th of February and I have a full-time job, I'll add people who comment up until 21:00 GMT on the 17th of February. Just to give myself enough time in case real life gets busy. If I've time I'll add anyone who comments afterwards but I guess it depends on how busy the thread gets.

Cast off into the Neath!

I used to play fallen london and I really enjoyed the game itself and I even bought fate a couple of times. What I didn't enjoy was the wait for candle points to regenerate and that was eventually what made me stop playing. I didn't have the time to try the game during the free weekend but it has been on my wishlist since the first email I got from fallen london mentioning their steam game.

That's what puts me off FL too. I really enjoy the story but running out of action points is frustrating.

I love the roguelike elements in this game. For some reason I´ve always enjoyed roguelites, and Sunless Sea takes the elements but isn´t defined by the genre. Instead it´s trying to give you an expreience. The experience of loneliness and darkness. Of fear and survival. And it does a really good job at that.

I did play the game, and for one thing it´s rather hard to get into. It takes a while before you realize a lot of the mechanics, and in that aspect I wished there was a longer tutorial. On the other hand I know now how fast terror increases etc. from first hand experiences, which isn´t bad either.

My first captain will be named Sirrington Sirsworth. Madam Sirrington Sirsworth.

I died a tonne in the beginning. I had a lot of feeling of floundering, not knowing where I was supposed to be going, panicking over resources, that sort of thing.

But I got it eventually and really enjoyed it!

I added this to my wishlist July of 2014, as the exploratory aspect and dark atmosphere of this game struck me as a world I would enjoy getting lost in. Also, I am a sailor, so I appreciate games with a maritime/piracy them. Unfortunately, I was away from steam for the free weekend, so I haven't had a chance to play yet. First captain: Guybrush Threepwood.

Well this will probably be one of the few times i will apply to a whitelist just because I LOVE the lore of this game, been playing fallen london (the browser game that came loooong before sunless sea set in the same universe) for around 2 months. So i am really hooked to it. now my interest of this game is manly because of the lore, what i played of it it was kind of boring gameplay related, i am not really that into rouge likes on pc (i find them great fun in mobile)and it was too slow for me. Also my first captain or character in fallen london had my real name (Leonel Z*** )and the title that it had and still has is "a fascinating and puissant individual of mysterious and indistinct gender" and when i played the game i called it that too pretending it was the same person (in the browser game you can actually buy a ship and go to the zee and explore and stuff, havent done it yet as it is expensive as fuck, ingame money ofcourse) but as i die really quick i take it as a false timeline that didnt exist and was just a drug induced dream that my character had (i "roleplay" as my character being REALLY hedonist and into drugs and stuff)

My FL character is pretty hedonistic too. Always hanging around honey dens and carousing with devils. Probably why she can't afford a ship either!

I added it to my WL June 2015, should have been sooner, but sometimes real life gets in the way, other times one can be dumb and just remember the game one likes and add it to "isthereanydeal" website in an effort to catch a good deal :D
I too I'm doing double shifts now so whenever I'm in da house I play whatever I feel like getting off with, or during the working days I may just leave steam idling for cards, cause I love collecting stuff :P
Now, for your questions:
It makes it interesting because it seems to have a random component, it's rogue-like, customization for your ships/vessels, it has quests and I'm a sucker for those too! I just like exploring!
I did not get to play it on the weekend as I was "otherwise engaged" (Sheldon says) taking care of my dad and then had to go pull a heavy, big metal box from a wall: an old window-air-condiioner for those whom know what that is. Whomever installed it were either idiots or ill-intended idiots cause they jammed it with the metal casing and concrete, so it bent and it was no way of removing it without bruteforcing the damn thing with a hammer and tools. UFF sweet mother of god I do not want to do that again any time soon! sorry for that wall of text
I'd name my first captain.. (can I have more than one, right?) I'd name him/her "Morgan", then when/if have another one, he could be SlickBeard this time around, then it's split between RottenHook and Scarlett if female or Crimson if male. There's plenty to choose, so I have thousands!

kay, think I got it all, hopefully I've amused some of you in the process, too, as a side effect :P

Cheers, matey,
let me hear some aye aye captain!

2)It was on free weekend?

I missed out on the free weekend but I've had it wishlisted since I saw totalbiscuit's video on it, the setting and writing looks really cool and I'd love to have a chance to win it! I try to complete games that I own so you don't need to worry about it gathering virtual dust :)

I think I just missed the free weekend. Funny because I'm jobless and literally sitting in front of my PC most of the time. Can't recall what I did last week.

I'm always up for some roguelikes since Dungeons of Dredmor. Currently Darkest Dungeon doesn't really scratch the itch and I've already 1001% in Binding of Isaac. I'm bad at naming characters, but I think I'll name my first captain Cheedo.

It's not as roguelike as you would think, imo. The play times are much too long for that. My only successful captain took about 40 hours!

I had it wishlisted for some time but i have to admit that my first impression while playing it at free weekend was kinda... meh. So. Have a free bump. Yes.

I played it during the free weekend and I loved it! It's such an interesting concept. I had, however, not a lot of time in the weekend and I could only play a couple of captains. I absolutely loved how it is almost like a book with so much text, but at the same time it has a really nice gameplay. There's much I didn't understand, but I guess it takes more hours to get everything.

Oh, and my first captain... well, a classic! Ahab, like in Moby-Dick! But I promise to call the second snugglor if I win!!!

I did test it during the free weekend and what I enjoyed most were the setting and story telling. Combat itself seemed neat, but wasn't breathtaking. I didn't explore the game too much though.

First captain? Might be Ramius.

Combat is probably the weakest point of the game, to be honest. Even when you trade in for a better ship it's almost always better to just avoid combat as you spend more in fuel than you get back in rewards.

  1. I like challenging games with a good story.
  2. I didn't play it at free weekend because I like to finish games in one sitting. So playing a "free demo" for few hours is not for me.
  3. I will be captain of my ship so - PMP Nekro.

Of all the games to have a free weekend I do wonder how the Sunless Sea one was received because the learning curve is so steep to begin with.

This game has been on my wishlist for a long time and when the free weekend came by, I was so excited. Unfortunately, I only got an hour or so in because I was busy that time. The brief experience was just what I had hoped for and more. To me, It had the board game feel like when my friends and I would play Arkham Horror and other titles until sunrise. I loved creating the background stories. But my favorite aspect was atmosphere. The tension was incredible, not knowing what lurked around. For my captain's name, I'll probably stick with my first captain since I didn't finish my run XD Captain Rowe.

What makes this game interesting to you?
I like the roguelite formula and this game seems similiar to FTL, which I loved.

Did you play the free weekend and if so, what did you think of it?
I did play it for an hour or so, I loved the atmosphere but it requires a lot of patience to be played, there's a lot to read and that English is not easy at all even for me which I'm used to play/watch stuff in that language.

What will you name your first captain?
Dunther, of course.

  1. The grim and daunting setting. The monsters of the depths. The darkness around all the quests.

  3. "Nameless" probably - a guy with this name lived the longest during the free weekend.

I honestly thought I had this game in my Wishlist, but I must have forgotten to make sure!

The reason I think it looks good to me is that you don't always survive. Heck, I don't even know if there is an end game (or victory screen)! I did not get a chance to play it during the free weekend, but that does not mean I wouldn't love to play this game if I had it.

I would name my first Captain as Captain Crunch. With the subject matter of the game, it seems like it would be an apt name.;)

I'm only Level 0 here at the moment, so I don't know if this disqualifies me from this giveaway or not, but I figured I would give it a shot nonetheless. Even if I'm NOT eligible, thank you for offering this wonderful-looking game.:)

And if I am eligible, I would love to be Whitelisted for a chance to win it!

Thank you, snugglor.:)

Thank you for letting me know. I appreciate that.:)

Money's kind of tight until Tuesday, but when I get some how many games would I need to giveaway to become Level 1? There are a bunch on sale, so it would probably be a good time to purchase some. When calculating the point value of a game, does SG go by the game's regular price or the sale price?

I've also read that someone lost a level or something. Does that mean I would have to constantly giveaway games to remain at level 1? That could end up being pretty expensive! Or is it just the higher levels that have a greater "turn over" rate?

I apologize for all these questions, but you looked like a good person to ask.:)

No worries. As far as I remember to get to Level 1 you just have to give away something to get your value about $0.00. I'm not too familiar with the levels since the update, but I'm sure someone can correct me.

i don't like free weekend events because i like to play with calm so they make me anxiety xD
