My favorite series is Ranma ½ . The perfect mix of action, romance and comedy with every character being amazing, hilarious and unique. My preference will depend on the series, but generally the original work tends to be much better from my experience, which tends to be the Manga version.
For Ranma, I love both. The anime has the animation style, voice actors and opening/ending music that I love. But the plots and characterization are much better in the Manga.
edit: Solved!

Ranma ½ was good, though I've never watched the anime. Rumiko Takashi works are true classic, I loved it and Inuyasha a lot.

Usually the original series, manga or anime, is better.

Dunno. Sometimes the animation is killer (e.g. Mob Psycho), the soundtracks (anything by Hiroyuki Sawano, Initial D for the meme), or the show gets carried by VA. But then there's stuff like Vagabond... and the art in that is just crazy beautiful, so... it's a coin toss.
Not sure if it's just me, but I also notice a lot more cliches in anime compared to manga. Corporatism sure is scary.
Anyway, thanks for the train! A couple of the older series took me a while :S

I have read a bit of Vagabond, Takehiko Inoue is a wonderful artist.

I'm not a fan of manga, but I was reading All You Need Is Kill, and it was fun to see how the same story can be told in manga and in action movie.

My favorite manga is currently 20th Century Boys, altough it's a tough choice between that or Oyasumi Punpun.
Also solved, and thank you for the givs!

Naoki Urasawa is my favourite manga artist, his works are so good. Though in my opinion 20th Century Boys dragged a bit near the end. I need to finish Oyasumi Punpun, I have read some of it and liked it but stopped for some reason.

The puzzle is solvable without any hint, even for people who haven't read most of them (like me). I started reading manga late (around 10 years ago), so while I have heard of those series before, I haven't read most of them.
I enjoy both anime and manga, but which I like more depends on the series. In most cases, both are great, but there are some cases where I don't like either of them (for example, From The New World anime successfully adapts the mystery part of the original novel, while the manga turns into a fan service one).
I'm not sure about your definition of "lesser known", but Yasashii Sekai no Tsukurikata is one series that I particularly like.

Shinsekai yori ? was that the disturbing one about a weird little secluded village and the kids growing up in it? If I'm remembering correctly I'm confused as to how they turned the manga into fan service, that whole thing was like a shayamalan movie before we all realized we know the formula by heart - half naked chicks should not be what is on the reader's mind...

I tend to blame publishers rather than artists when it comes to both anime and manga screw ups, based on past cases and the way Japan and east asia are structured in general. Like the whole idol band system for example wouldn't come out of anywhere other than there. The Mangaka are often like that, footsoldiers slaving away for the rich publishers, they create extremely successful manga and still be broke. Once in a while publishers would save manga with their ideas, but more often than not, they exploit them and such the life out of them.

That's good then, I find them all pretty good and definitely recommend them! Yasashii Sekai no Tsukurikata seems nice, I'll check it out.

Bump. Manage to get 2 answers right before using google.
I prefer manga to anime because i like the story more and anime sometimes shorten the story . on the other hand, with slice of life series, music series or such i may prefer anime more.

No small talk this time, here's a puzzle for you: http://www.itstoohard.com/puzzle/iEGYVt9K
Guess the manga series names from the art and you will get a ticket to a minitrain. They are all mangas I have read and loved very much, some pretty recent and ongoing. Though some are pretty old so if not a lot of people can solve them I'll give some hints. I have loved manga since I was really young, I love it a lot more than anime. The beauty of still art just appeals to me a lot more than moving animations.
How about you, do you like still images or animation more? Do you have any lesser known manga you like?
