Since I didn't see any other thread about this matter, and I just recently got aware of what happened, I would like to hear your opinion on it.

The facts as I saw them:

Now, I don't want you to discuss wether or not they're actually completely different games. The devs say so, I'm not entirely convinced.. It seems to me more like they stopped updating the first one to make the previous owners buy a "new" and improved game, but whatever. Both are still sold on the developers' site, and the first one is still on Desura too, so let's say they are different.

The question then would be: is it acceptable to release a game on Steam by taking advantage of the votes received on Greenlight for a different game? And what if the two games are very similar, like in this case?

My answer is in both cases no. Even if the second one is an improved version, as long as it's a different game, it should have to pass from Greenlight on its own.

I really don't think it matters, as long as the people who bought the game, liked it. It looks like it is a good game by the reviews.

So, in your opinion, let's say I submit Left 4 Dead on Greenlight (pretending it wasn't on Steam already), I wait for it to get votes and pass, and after it passes I change the content of the page to Portal and release that instead (same as before), never releasing the game that was actually voted. As long as the people who will buy it, will like it, it should be fine?

That is 2 different games, the 2nd game was like an updated version of the first one, so I would say it is fine.

Well, that's exactly the reason why I asked 2 questions in my original post :)
So if it's similar, it's fine, otherwise it's not?
What about Left 4 Dead and Left 4 Dead 2? Would it be fine if the first one wasn't released at all?
I would say no, because even if part of the same series, they are still different, and with the same logic I say no to the previous case.
But well, if you are still convinced it doesn't matter in both cases, I accept your opinion. I just wanted to clarify.

I would say so, because Left 4 Dead 2, currently is the almost the same as the first one.

Calm down. It's the same game but with extra content. It's like Submiting Left 4 Dead 1 and realising Left 4 Dead 2 (which contains whole Left 4 Dead 1 content).

I am perfectly calm O.o
And I know what I asked, in fact I intentionally used a game that had a sequel, for my follow up question (read my other answer above).
For me, even if in this case the 2nd one contains the missions from the 1st, it IS a different game, and therefore I wouldn't be fine if I voted for one and got only the other.

They promised Steam keys for previous buyers of the first one and now they don't want to give them because it's different game.

"Q: If I own Depth Hunter elsewhere, can I get a free Steam Key?
A: We can't promise that at this point. But we will try to provide you redeem code, if Valve allow this."

Well when I was reading the hub before they said they will provide discount for owners of first game. But if you bought The Greenlight Bundle 3 you get a steam key for second game.

About the game itself, "The Second Game" got same maps, same tasks but with added store.

I didn't because I already owned the game and they already promised me the Steam key. The Greenlight Bundle 3 said nothing about Depth Hunter 2 and that it will be released on Steam instead of Depth Hunter.

I don't want the discount. Instead of the discount I want my promised content I already bought. It's forcing people to buy additional content they don't want. They should add those new things as a DLC or something. The discount is like "if you already own our game you'll get it on Steam for free like we promised you, but first you need to buy that built-in DLC you didn't want and didn't vote for".

I know about the keys, and I know this can lead to endless discussions. I would prefer to avoid this.
In this thread I wanted the main point to be about the fact that they ARE different game, but then why the one we got on Steam is the one we didn't vote? How many people would be ok with that?

I don't know why but reading the thread title I thought about a Monster hunter clone xd.
The game looks cool, I wonder if it works with Oculus rift it could be amazing with it.

Well ironically the developer admit Dept Hunter 1 and 2 are the same game (here: in the greenlight discussion or here) still he said something wich really pisses me off this time:
Only one bundle helped us to promote the GreenLight page.
Wich is kinda ridicolous to believe because it's like saying "every bundle with Depth Hunter at side the Greenlight Bundle was no help for us".
And this is funny because, just as stated by himself, Depth Hunter and Depth Hunter 2 are the same game just with a different name, this means every bundle wich sold as DH and got votes for that actually HELPED them.
Well this is sadly funny... really.

Still i understand the "we don't promised free keys for other bundles" point, but then why changing name and don't say that from the start?
