Did steam gifting via mail change?

Gifts that I send to users via "Email my gift" are auto added to my friends list without me even clicking on that button (add friend)!

How can gifts be added to your friends list? And what button?

As far as I know it's been like this for a long time. I always got people who accepted my e-mailed gifts auto-added as friends.

I never had that, I send gifts before via mail (NOTE: few months ago) and was never added to friendslist!

Maybe they were, but they just removed you before you noticed? Or they didn't activate the gift right away, but stored in inventory/another account, for whatever reason? Not sure if that would prevent them from being added as friend..

It has been like this for at least a year when I gave away my first gift. I find it weird, I wonder what happens when you reach your friend limit and try to email someone else a gift.
