Haven't played it, my judgement is based the little I've seen on the web. The problem is the development took too long, DN is a 90's game. And the hype accumulating until it's release didn't help.

And the ego meter... sigh.

It was a case of expectations for the game growing so high with the amount of time it spent in development hell and the disaster of getting overhauled so much and being juggled by so many developers that the product simply did not manage to live up to the unrealistic expectations of the people.

^ This was the reason

Apart from that I enjoyed it..Even the multi-player portion of the game was not that bad (don't know about now, speaking about then)

Which Duke Nukem?

DN 3D is freaking Epic.

DN Forever seens rushed and have an overall low quality.

Some DNF bad points:

  • Weapons Limit.

  • Weapons are imbalanced. You arent going far without Shotgun, and "fun weapons" (shrink ray and freezer gun) are weak.

  • Low quality Textures.

  • In the "Miniaturized" levels the texture detail are the same, but you are looking at it from minimal distance, so it looks awful.

  • The jokes could be much better.

  • Ego meter...

  • It had WAY TOO MUCH hype accumulated.

It really was. Original Developer gave up and Gearbox had to finish it (or develop it at all) in a couple of months.

If you are talking about DNF then yes, people saying it's bad because the development is taking too long and all cliches and technology they are used already outdated and didn't meet fans expectation.

If you're talking about Duke Nukem 3D, that game is a classic, and very few people will say it's bad.

Duke Nukem Forever is another story entirely. The textures are all boring and muted, the level design is cliched, boring, and insanely repetitive, and the 'humor' constantly gets in the way of gameplay (Hey gaiz, let's have him stop to get gas three times! That'll be funny!), and clunky controls in jumping and driving make platform and driving segments more frustrating than fun.. But even all that could be forgiven if the combat weren't so god awful. The RPG holds five rockets max, for chrissake. In the PC version you can only hold 4 guns at once. I can't even imagine how terrible the console version with its two gun max inventory even works. You go through all 200 rounds for your ripper in three enemies, and you'll be lucky to survive a single encounter if you actually pick weapons you want instead of picking weapons that can actually hold ammo. It's very telling that in the first scene with the faux boss encounter, you spend more time running around and waiting for ammo than actually shooting the damn boss. And this is all compounded by the fact that the combat is just so damn slow. You shoot the one enemy that's there and then wait ten seconds for the next one to spawn before you rinse and repeat. I spent well over half of every combat just sitting and waiting for the enemies to arrive.

I could go on, but let's leave it there. Oh, and for future reference, The Doctor Who Cloned me has better gameplay. If the combat in that was like the base game, it might be worth it.

I played throught NDF, and I liked it.
People hate it because:

  • expected graphics/gameplay like was in the 2001 E3 trailer
  • 10 years of continous development product (basicly something perfect) expected
  • not enough jokes
  • only a few weapons can be with you

I own DNF and it is just boring. It looks and plays as an old game, boring missions, more or less lame jokes, 2 weapon limit, ...

in the options there is "expanded inventory" setting so player could hold 4 weapons instead of 2 (but it's still less than in DN 3D)

Ya know, the 2D Platformers without hookers, toilet humour and one-liners.

where you shoot robots and stuff...

The first half in the video sums up the problems pretty good, even though I had great fun with the game anyway.. but yeah, those are the problems.

The second half gets pretty strange though.. does he really complain about DNF not beeing political correct enough AND abourt games getting rated depending on if they are fun to play or not? o_O
I mean, he defends his point about the DNF-humor pretty well, but I think he took the game just a bit too serious xD For me, the humor was the only reason to really enjoy the game.. the rest of the game was "just okay" with some upsides and some big downsides.

I like Duke Nukem Forever really. Have medium graphic but gameplay, one-liners, missions great for me. I think peope expecting more from this game and this is really why called the DNF shit game.

One reason. I am playing as Duke Nukem and i am forced to stay in cover like a Cod pussy? I am Duke fucking Nukem, i should blow shit up, not hiding behind a wall.
Serious Sam 3 is the real DNF.

It is not bad. People just had their expectation too high for a game in dev for thirteen years.

the reason its bad is because it constantly tries to be something its not and the regenerating health. after about an hour or 2 it starts feeling like a duke nukem game

The Doctor who cloned me DLC just gets right into the DN feel without the bolted on crap like driving portions

my idea of it is that people were expecting a lot more after 13 years, thus, most people that liked the game probably didnt have to wait for 13 years and just picked it up cheap (like me) expecting an awful game when really its not that bad

Well to be honest, I was happy after 13 years of waiting, and really, after that long time, they could have just handed me a platter of poop with a duke nukem sticker on it, and I'd still find some entertaining use for it

If you forget about the story of making of DNF it will be a nice game and also some FPS standards parody. For example here is what look like a life of hero AFTER saved the world in past - prestige, penthouse and womens... many womens on begining of this game. Also a full parody of game hero - he is sellfish, ignorant, but still a hero who can only saved the day. So as a that type of game is very fun experience.
