We can't even send steam gifts since the update that removed the inventory, so the name is already obsolete anyway. :P

Well we sorta can, but it's a bit cumbersome.

Wait till the winner is drawn, add to Steam friends, purchase game as gift.

Do the other sites have a version of the steam auth thingy that allows us to attach our steam accounts to this site? I don't really use them that often, so I'm not sure if they work in the same way.

What he meant is that other DRM platforms don't have a way to "login with" as Steam does (Steam provides an API will most don't), which is troublesome for SG to check things such as if you already own a game etc.

Unfortunately GOG's APIs are specifically for user agents such as their own website and Galaxy and are useful only on the account you're logged in as. For a steamgifts/goggifts website to use them a user would need to let them log in on the user's behalf (by supplying 2FA codes as necessary and basically handing over complete control of the account) which crazy and, thankfully, against GOG's terms of service. If we had the public APIs needed for a goggifts site I'd have made such a site myself years ago.

It is possible to work around the functionality we're missing, but it's a bit awkward. A hypothetical goggift site would probably need at minimum the following:

  • check prices, names, unique ids and cover art for products (easily done by scraping the website)
  • verify that a user is the owner of a certain gog account and grab username, account id and avatar of that account (awkward but possible by having them post a challenge code to the gog forum and provide the url, then create a goggifts password and repeat the process when attempting a password reset)
  • check a user's owned games (this can be done by scraping public profile pages, but many gog users keep profiles disabled because there's currently no other way to limit what profiles share)

Actually, Uplay is a very good example why it doesn't work like that. As far as I know, Uplay doesn't even have any kind of web profile to show your account games. You always need to log on with their client to see what games are associated with your account (correct me if I'm wrong). Both examples you mentioned, Uplay syncing stats and GOG Connect actually rely on the Steam API.

First they need to have an API to check which games have been added to that users library (to check for win activation), as well as their prices (so as to know whether their account is valuable enough to use SG or whatever the site would change its name to).

Third-party sites won't help. Can you show your library on those platforms to others? If yes - then at least theoretically it can be implemented. If not - then no chance, your account can't be synced. I know GoG has such feature. But the rest? I don't think so, correct me if I'm wrong here.

I can view anyone's Steam library also.

That's the point. But for example I can't even view my own library in EPIC via web, so obviously it's technically impossible to make functionality similar to SG with epic game store. Steam and GoG are exceptions, not a rule. Maybe some other platforms allow this too, but it's you who should check it before suggesting adding them as an option.

You are not being realistic. It's simple as that: either you can show me your epic library NOW, or it's impossible (no matter what you think). And no, being able to access it from the same PC where their launcher is installed won't do.

It was impossible. Now it's possible. It's happened so. It can happen that what you suggest will become possible someday. Until that - it's impossible, and you are wasting my (and other users) time with your sophistry. I didn't suggest to track profile limited games while it was impossible, I suggested it only when it become possible. Suggestion to add GoG support is valid, because it's ALREADY possible. Just needs implementation. Suggestion to ad Epic games is invalid, and will remain invalid as long as Epic won't implement some kind of API on their side.

Maybe it could be a way to convince the companies behind the other clients to build the required API. They build it, SteamGifts gives people free games that get them using the other clients. Then some of those people buy things through the other clients store.

You're replying to a year old comment made by a guy who hasn't been online here in over two months...

Now, reading what others recently had to say about this, the problem seems to mostly comes from the other platforms not having a public API.

So there's that.

Also, personally, I couldn't care less if CG added the ability to make giveaways for games on other platforms. I don't think that would get SteamGifts more traffic/users because let's face it, the vast majority of GA's created are for leftover bundle keys and game bundles are mostly comprised of Steam keys. I don't think it would make much difference. But if that ever happens... good. However for now, it doesn't seem like something CG could implement because of the lack of API.

Until then, if you have itch.io, GOG, whatever game keys you want to get rid of... I know you know, but... just drop them in threads. Or create your own thread for non-Steam games.

Hi moppel.:)

I just wanted to let you know that I had sent you a friend request on Steam. We have a fair number of mutual friends (like you mentioned), and we also have some similar groups!:)

Also, if you don't mind me asking your age...how old are you? The reason I am asking is that there are a couple of couple of groups that I think you'd like (they aren't giveaway groups). The first group is Adult Elite Gamers (the only stipulation is that you have to be 25 years or older), and the second is Adult World Gamers (but that one is 30 years or older, so you may be too young for that one for now). I think you'd like the groups, and I think you have some friends that are in them as well.:)

Only if other platform has public libraries, API and Log In with XXX to make sure profiles are correct (aka you are not just linking proifile of known collector so it looks like you own sth). Then I see no problem with other platforms, without it - no way, it would be rulebreaking and regifting spree.

NO too much trouble for nothing, these new markets need API's first, then dedicated sites to them, then a large number of games to make this viable :D

I can see GOG viable for this as it can of mimics the features but for the rest no, they are not even 3rd party market sellers, let's see epic first what it can do :D

Discord Nitro has some free games that I don't own on Steam (Dandara and The End is Nigh) so technically I've used the store to download those games. We could have a manual opt-in system or a beta with only a handful people. (Might be hard for Origins and Blizzard. I don't think they have APIs or any ways to check if someone actived a game. GOG and Uplay would be easier and a great start.) It probably would revitalize SG, that has been in a downward trend since the changes to inventory. We can even giveaway steam gifts anymore. More clients = more users = more clicks = more ad money. Besides the initial hassle, everybody wins in the long term.

I think it will cause a massive amount of confusion and problems with both people creating and entering giveaways for the wrong client and also problems with being able to code the site properly for all the different clients. It just sounds like a big mess.

For the sake of keeping users happy and maintaining order such thins would need to be kept separate. Any users of said pages would need to link their account for the respective client to their site account. If you just throw everything together it will cause disappointment, confusion, and CV scamming.

Also some clients have limited number of games, or limited access to keys/gifting make them not worth the effort. GoG would be one of the better choices for an alternative client to set up another gifting site for.

Who keeps all their (gaming) eggs in a single basket nowadays? We need game client inclusion, since it's obvious that monopoly is a vile thing no matter which company or segment is partaking in it. I can't understand gamers which blindly follow Valve's every decision, while refusing to own games on Origin, Uplay, GOG or any other alternative to Steam. Hopefully SteamGifts will adapt.

I really don't like the idea of boggling everything into one pot that's becoming such a norm in the last 10 years. We used to have websites/forums for every topic, competition was thriving, people were visiting more than one website... but then it all became 99in1, and every website/forum/server/chat had to have it all, and keep all the visitors there all the time, and it spilled into every other service and people got so lazy... Like, what's the problem of making a new service that offers a new thing? No, let's have everything here because who can visit more than one website, right?

Also, they were removed like 6 years ago because it's basically impossible to check if someone actually redeemed their gift or not. That's a really good reason, considering that sadly, not all people here are trustworthy without checks set in place to keep them on the right path.

Is there a way to track all those clients automatically to see that users activate games and so on?

Overall, I'm not against the idea persé.
With this though, as the first comment said, there will be more mistakes in giveaways. To which I'd say, there should then just be punishments for those people.
As long as it works and it's optional for those DRMs, then sure, why not.

But my first question will play the definitive part in whether I agree overall or not.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

No, only GOG and Steam have API.

I started to use Playnite lately and only those 2 libraries could be automatically downloaded after I gave them my username. I had to authenticate my account by writing nick and password, to synchronize Origin library (I think SG wouldn't want to store external launcher credentials to sync library every week or so).

Battlenet, Uplay could automatically sync only games that are installed. So Playnice check folders, see exe file and add games to owned list.

Yeah, as long as it's possible to basically run everything the same way for another service like you could for Steam, then I'd be down for it. But otherwise, it'd just create a lot of hassle, lying, regifting and so on.
