Cinematic feeling, aka consoles are barely running the 30fps 1080p so we are going to lock it at that, also we are too lazy to optimize our games to run better. /Ubisoft /EA

It is just an argument because new consoles are not able to run games on decent resolution with 60FPS so they try to convince players to 30FPS is the better experience. But who tried 60FPS know it is just stupid lie.

I love playing at 120 fps but with the whole "cinematic" idea I feel sick sometimes watching movies at this fps. Ive only seen Frozen and Despicable Me 2 at these frames and my eyes feel weird seeing such fluidity.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah, the Hobbit was too weird and that was only 48fps.

With videogames though higher framerate just means less choppy graphics and more precision controlling the game.

I actually thought that looked pretty nice, cept for some strange effects. But for the most part movies using real people at high frame rates I think looks nice, but cartoosn and animations....idk it feels like im watching a cutscene that never ends and for some reason my brain doesn't know how to handle it very well. When watchin despicable me 2 I felt my hands twitch trying to reach for a controller whenever it seemed like a scene would tie in to gameplay

I find new movies are hard to follow because they change the camera angle every .5 seconds, and all you end up seeing, are explosions and people you don't have time to give a shit about running away

console peasants say that the human eye cant notice the difference between 60 fps and 30 fps and they will always stick to that ignorant argument, even if you show them proof

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

There is a difference, but it's so insignificant I don't know why people bother to argue about it. I grew up playing the ps1, so maybe I'm used to crap graphics and framerates, but the fps is the last thing I care about, gameplay's far more important

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

well, personnaly, i really dislike the console users who say consoles are superior to computers. if you prefer to play in a platform with less quality that's your problem and no one should force you to change, but if you try to prove that consoles are better than PC's and use stupid arguments like the "no FPS difference" one and companies (like ubisoft) lock their games to 30 FPS to all platforms just for the console gamers not to be envious of the PC master race, then we have a problem.

btw, FPS affects gameplay and I think the difference is slightly significant, but again, that's an opinion.

Im a very slow guy so i prefer 12-15 fps so i can make better choises in game :) and i really love bullet time fps

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

If 30 FPS is twice as cinematic as 60 FPS, then 15 FPS is three times as cinematic. Then, 1 FPS is 6 or 7 times as cinematic.

I'm cool with 30 FPS minimum in some games, but most of what I play is heavy on quick motion. Though most people can see 60 FPS easily, I can't. I cap out around 50, maybe 45-48. After that, I can't really tell the difference anymore. My eyes aren't what they once were. I doubt the majority of gamers are older, especially the console gamers.

Permalink

30fps has zero advantages over 60. More delay between frames = more input lag. You might not get the difference between 50 and 60, but 60 is easier to standardise because it's a simple doubling, rather than x1.65. And I hope you can tell the difference between a 30fps YouTube video and a 60fps one, otherwise GTFO :)

The "cinematic" thing is an argument put forward because developers think we're idiots. The real reason for Hollywood holding back higher frame rates is because sets and props aren't built to look realistic enough yet. Less motion blur per frame means you see more details. That's why The Hobbit (at 48fps) CGI looks awesome but some of the live stuff looks weird.

Wait, the CGI looks good? At a higher frame rate? Aren't GAMES also CGI? But... but... Yeah.

Wow, that got ranty.

From what I know, they keep it 24 because there are still lots of places (cinemas, home TVs) that can't show more, for one reason or another.

Backwards compatibility is what keeps cinema in past.

Never seen an scientific article saying that the human eye can see beyond the 30 fps, only gamers and people who sells expensive things, so I still think it's bullshit and you should not care about 30.000001 fps or higher.

In t he first I don't feel nothing, sorry. The second is much better at 60 fps, but we don't know how it was done, if the comparison is indeed true, if the eye can't distinguish between 30 and 60, for me it's just about selling GPU for gamers.
