I've attempted to play the original Half-Life multiple times but each attempt ends in me getting horrible motion sickness. I've tried adjusting FOV but it has never fixed the motion sickness for me.

Is the motion sickness effect as bad in HL2?

I've never heard of motion sickness from HL, but I heard a lot of reports of motion sickness from HL2 right after it came out, so odds are it might be even worse for you.

It's been forever since I've played Half-Life, but I don't remember any motion sickness. Same with HL2. But there have been games that gave me motion sickness before, It's different for everybody.

Since it's a different engine, maybe Half-Life: Source would be different for you?

That sucks, and I feel for you. Quake 3 gave me horrendous motion sickness, and no matter what I did, I couldn't fix it either.

Fortunately, for whatever reason, the Half Life games don't have the same effect on me.

I never get motion sickness in any game at all, but recently I can barely feel it when I play Deus Ex GOTY.

I've never had a case of motion sickness, and I've played all sorts of games, even Portal. If you're getting motion sickness from Half-Life, you should probably take that as a sign not to play any of the more motion-intensive games, because HL isn't really a game known for causing motion sickness.

I haven't got it before... D:, though two of my friends can't play FPS games because it hurts their eyes. Can't really imagine why though. Worst that a FPS game does to me is that it gives me a headache, I usually try to avoid them altogether.

I have not experienced any "motion sickness" from Half Life or Half Life 2 or any FPS for that matter :S I'm not quite sure how it works.

Can't say I have. I've heard of people getting sick from HL2 though, so if 1 makes you ill, you may want to stay clear of 2. Only time I've ever gotten motion sickness was in a small freeware first person game, but I have no idea what exactly triggered it. Nothing else seems to bother me, but that one... I actually thought I was going to throw up. ._.

Yes! But sadly this applies to most first-person games for me. Half-Life 2 particularly. But no amount of dizziness, headaches, or nausea will stop me from continuing to try!

Haha I can barely play most FPS games except for a selected few. I try to play it still tho but in smaller portions.

After playing Q3: Arena for a couple of years, I thought nothing can give me motion sickness.
Until this year. I decided to play through HL2 once again (to get all possible achievements + I installed HL2 Update 2.0 by Philipp Victor). After playing through the first levels to my surprise I discovered that I am throwing up while traveling on boat through canals filled with goo during Route Canal - Water Hazard chapters. I decided to take a pause cause I though I ate something wrong. But after I continued playing, I found that indeed motion sickness it was.

That was due to specific materials and textures used in game to give the goo its yellowish look. Along with specific HDR shine, which literally made me blind sometimes.

I googled a bit and discovered that it happens because of the FOV - it was set to 60 or 70 by default. After I made it 105, the motion sickness disappeared.

To OP - in Half-Life try disabling fast running in game.

Seems like these console commands may help:

sv_friction 2.8

sv_maxspeed 400

sv_accelerate 1.78

sv_airaccelerate 6 (try messing with this - some people say it should be 10)

Playing on a smaller screen could help, does for me, windowed mode if you have to.
