some black and white multiplayer horror game, its premise was that it only had XXXXXXXXXX amount of lives, and once enough multiplayer kills were made, the game would either shut down or go into phase two.

I keep thinking its kholat because i distinctly remember it had a black n white vibe as well. Or at least it's game image did, like Kholat.

I remember watching a review for that game, it had something to do with lanterns or similar, didn't it?

The game you are thinking of is The Flock.

Kholat is a single player, open world, walking simulator. I enjoyed the atmosphere and exploration of Kholat, but the story wasn't explained well and was left open to interpretation which I don't like.

Edit: It looks like The Flock is dead. This is from the game description on the Steam page:

Unfortunately the game didn't do well enough for the population to decrease in any way worth mentioning. Vogelsap ran out of money a long time ago, and therefore the server that keeps track of the population run out too. We said we would rather go down then change our philosophy for this game. Well.. it became the first thing; we went down

Similar to GRAV. I think you can still play both games, but they are abandoned and essentially dead.

I was under the impression that The Flock wasn't innovative, engaging, or marketed enough for gamers to stomach an experimental game that was honest up front about the limited lifespan of a multiplayer only game.
