I have a serious question that I want to ask you guys. What Nintendo console should I get? After deciding not to get a PS3 or PS Vita I have decided to instead opt for a Nintendo console. I can't really afford a Wii U but I can get a Wii or a 3DS XL or one of the classic consoles. I know I can play classic Nintendo games on an emulator but it just does not feel the same. There is also the Wii Mini (I am Canadian) but it lacks certain things that I would want. I hope to snag a 3DS XL bundle or Wii bundle this coming Boxing Day. Also, are Wii games and 3DS XL games still being made? Or is Nintendo just making games for the Wii U for now on? Thank you for helping me!

As the 3DS is still new, they'll continue supporting it for a while. New Super Mario Bros 2 was just released, along with DLC every now and then. The Next Smash Bros will be on both 3DS and Wii U too.
Wii has such a large userbase, so yes, I'm sertain they'll continue making wii games for a while longer, and even if they didn't, there's tons of good games already released for it.

And 3DS can read all DS's games, so would be 2 console in one.

Also the new Pokemon games have been confirmed for 3DS so if you're into that, get the 3DS.

Wii U can play all past Nintendo console games, so that would be 5 in one.

Yes and that would be a great option if it wasn't because OP said he can't afford one.

there are very few good wii games when compared to the competition. the only good thing about teh wii is that it runs gamecube games and gamecube has a better library then WII. unless you like party games, then wii is queen in that department.

On the Wii there aren't only party games, you just need to look behind them in the stores.
For al the multiplatform games I used the pc, while on Wii I have about 30 gems which only 2-3 are party games (mainly because I used them with my friends and sister). So no, there si more than "just party games".

it's true there aren't only party games but the truth is that the good games of the wii are much fewer then the games from previous consoles like gamecube or N64. if we remove the first party titles (which most are eitehr awesoem or great) we get 3 RPGs that had problems to localize in english and because the stupid console is region locked there was no way to play it without hacking teh damn thing. you have a few shooters which are average, you have a good ace combat game and few more titles. If you are someone that plays all genres wii has probably around 50 titles "worth" buying.
those titles are good. look at muramasa or g generation gundam. look at naruto. those were impressive even with that crappy resolution.
don't get me wrong, wii has some good to excelent games however the quantity of those games is so small that i really have no idea why someone would buy a wii for only the wii games. Personally the gamecube library is much more impressive....

I don't recommend Wii. I have one it's fun at start but then you get tired of the 360p!!! graphics. 3DS XL is probably pretty good to play it should have a pretty big battery life.
They will probably stop making Wii games but will continue making 3DS games.

If you choose Wii, get one of the older models. New ones have GC compatibility removed.

I have a DSI XL with an R4 card that has an 8gb micro sd card in it. It can hold around 200 games without ever needing to change the cartridge. Best thing I ever invested in, I love it.

fyouwant toplay the classics, buy the retro duo. It plays both NES and SUper nes. For a few bucks more get a trio and play Genesis with it. Not sure how canada's cash works compared to us, but the duo is $70 USD

You can get a Wii for that much and it plays all those games plus more.

Maybe so but some people don't like Wii. I have several friends who have all the old systems or the retro duo/trio specifically because they'drather play their hard copies.

That's fair enough because I'm one of those people that would rather play their carts. I still have all my old consoles. I just recommended the Wii because you can play every Nintendo console on it.

While the Retro Duo/Trio is cool, buying one is a terrible idea unless you already own all of the good classics. Finding them nowadays is hard, and even when you do find them they tend to be severely overpriced.

WII
pros
-very cheap
-hackable so it can be region free
-weird motion controls with the possibility of using the "classic" scheme
-weird and inovative games!
Cons
-few hardcore games
-few JAP games
-Region locked if you don't hack the console
-virtual shop expensive as hell for old games
-only does 480p with some games, everythings looks last gen.

3DS
pros
-portable
-Can run DS games
-cool 3D efffects, this is quite a good gimmick
-very new so it has lots of untapped potential
Cons
-fucking region locked, this means no GUNDAM for me, no naruto, no macross, no one piece, no more anime/manga games, well fuck you nintendo! i'll be cuddling vita!
-small battery life with 3D enabled (about3-4 hours)
-lack of a second thumbstick.
-like most new nintendo consoles hardcore games are so spread apart that i haven't touched the console in quite a while.

my opinion would be to get a cheap wii and explore the small wii library and the masterpiece games of the gamecube. that will last for while. just remember that gamecube games are expensive as hell!

Honestly the wii(Has a nice backlog of great games now) and grab a classic control.

Mod it(Easy as hell) and let me tell you the Snes emulator is excellent and feels like you are playing the actual Snes with the Classic controller(Get the original one if you can)

nintendo... i will never ever buy nintendo again!

so... when i was 11 i got my Nintendo DS lite. 150€. And most of my friends bought it, too. So

Me: shortly after guarantee the link that hold the 2 pieces (down and upper screen)together broke. luckyly there was 1 other link, but the sound was almost broken. COME ON i was 12, so Nintendo should not sell KIDS some stuff that brakes after guarantee and makes then cry :(

My best friend: a month after guarantee the touchscreen FLIPPED OUT! showing differnet colors like whatever. everywhere lines in different colors. no game playable anymore.

My other friend: half a year after guarantee the nintendo just did not work anymore. Nothing. He sended it to support and they said : It is fixable...for 70€!

I WILL NEVER EVER EVER [...] EVER trust nintendo anymore. They are done for me. I am PC and PSP fan now, never nintendo again. The only nintendo console still running is the game boy color. Back then they made their products with quality, but now...they just wanna catch children and be like "oooop. Your pocket money of one year is broken. But we could repair it for another year of pocket money hehehe" or else be like "UNFORTUNATELY we bought the license of Monster Hunter! You have to buy a Nintendo to play it. Ouuuuhhhh"

Bad luck?

I feel like I am the only one that never had a system break. Every system I have down to the Snes still functions 100%(My DSlite is perfect also but I didn't swing it open or play rough with the touch screen), if you wanna look at failure rates Sony and Microsoft are off the charts when compared to Nintendo...

All my consoles works perfectly still too. NES, GBC, GBASP, DSi, 360, GC, N64, Wii. So yeah, either really bad luck, or perhaps not really carefully handeled.

My DS Classic was working well long time after guarantee. When it finally broke, I sent it for repair. I paid ~35$ for the new casing, touchscreen, and the cables connecting to the upper screen + repair of course. When I got it back, it looked like new.
I've heard DS Lite was easier to break, but still, it was probably bad luck it broke so fast after guarantee.

Consoles nowadays are not prefect, just look at X360 RRODs and PS3 laser problems.

Well, its not "normal" for them to break, but the DS is the first and only Nintendo Product that has some real durability flaws. Usualy you can play football with their consoles without the fear of doing any damage ;)
Sony consoles on the other hand tend to blow up if you do as much as looking at them the wrong way xD The first versions anyway, they usualy fix this with the second release (PSone, PS2 Slim etc).
..and Microsofts suicidal first X360 wasn´t so glorious either, but at least they made up for it with a great costumer support.

Well.. for local Multiplayer fun the Wii is great, but if you like to play solo games, this might be the worst console ever. There are a few very awesome solo-titles like Mario Galaxy, Zelda and The Last Story, but not enough to justify a buy if you are mainly looking for sologaming.

The "old" DS on the other hand is one of the best consoles ever made with a huge libary of awesome titles to choose from. The 3DS has yet to reach its full potential, but since you can play all the original DS-Games on it, its worth its money without a doubt.

3DS XL is the best choice, is premature to buy Wii U.

3DS XL has really great games like resident evil revelations or Kid Icarus Uprising and you can play retro games by virtual console but i think that 5€ for Super Mario Bros for NES is expensive :/
