I know similar questions have been asked (not recently as far as I can tell though). I'm just curious about what everyone thinks about the progress being made on each of these titles. How are they coming along? I want to try something from this genre with a friend and I'm just trying to find the best investment in terms which game will end up being the nicest finished product. I'd really appreciate some insightful answers on this subject. Much love, SG.

Of those three I prefer 7 Days to Die, cause that's the only real survival game in my opinion.
The zombies are a great threat in this game especially at night, you can also set your own difficulty to make this game really a hardcore survival game.
And you have lot's of possibilities to build stuff. You can play alone or together with your friends without risk of getting shot by some kids.

DayZ and Rust are just kinda FPS with zombies. The biggest threat are other players, cause many of them just kill you without any reason. Most of the time the Zombies aren't a threat at all. The building is not exsting in DayZ if you don't use mods, but you can build stuff in Rust, but it's by far not so varied like in 7 Days to Die.

Thanks for your reply.

Which one of these titles got the biggest chance of ever seeing full release? 7 days to die aswell?

I can tell with 100% certainty that both DayZ and Rust will not get fully released within 2016. Both are still on their alpha stage, have many bugs and just by reading through their forums or reviews you can tell that hardly anyone from the community believes that they will be fully released any time soon.

As for Rust in particular, i had stated before that Rust was one of the best. I was right, it was. Its Devs had stated about a year ago that Rust won't get a high discount nor will get bundled before the game reaches a certain point on its development and is a step before moving towards its full release. However, the game got both bundled and a big discount (50%) while it is certainly far from finished. When the devs were asked to comment on this fact, they denied to make any comments. That alone can tell you that Rust is following the steps of DayZ and has entered the "endless" early access period. It is already 3 years on early access, so do not waste your time or money on a game which will never get finished.

If you look how many updates 7 Days to Die got (including really major ones) and how that game was already improved, there's at least a chance that it get a full release someday.

Rust also got several updates, but most of them are just minor ones (little grafical improvements, bug fixes), so meh I don't know.

I think I don't have to say anything about DayZ it probably will take years until the game is on the same level as the Mod...

Also the question is what do you mean with "full release". Many of the early access games get their 1.0 version while still being far away from being completed.

Think Ark: Survival Evolved has got to be the best for updates, Devs always seem to be putting time into it at least an update a week seems to be made

Yeah but Ark is not even a year in early access. At the beginning most EA games have tons of updates, but that can change after almost 3 years early acess when less and less copys get sold...

ARK is due to leave EA in June so don't see them slowing down and dragging it at so long like DayZ

The question is how complete will the game be when it leaves EA.
Bohemia can also just say DayZ gonna leave EA today, that doesn't mean anything.

hmm yeah true that but there is no sign of them slowing down & hopefully the end product will be a finished game not a half arsed released piece of shit, saying that it's current state seems to be less buggy than DayZ. If DayZ & Ark finished EA tomorrow I would have to say from what I have seen ArK would be a better title =P

The point is that you were talking about how many updates 7days gets, I was just saying Ark gets way more currently =p

None of these are true "survival" games. We have a resource gathering and crafting game and two murder simulators that are all about the PvP.
Given the 'requirement' of it being survival, 7 Days to Die comes closest. But barely.

If and when the focus revolves around either PvP or straight up combat then its hard to consider it a survival game.
Or rather, if that is included in the consideration then Battlefield and Call of Duty are also survival games.

For survival its better to look in the direction of titles similar to Project Zomboid or Don't Starve which actually focus on survival (food/water, elements, sleep etc) not just combat.
Though if you really want a challenge you should look at Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead.

Kind of a fair point - rather PvP surviving than PvE.
Could you name a "true survival game"? While vastly different, Don't Starve and NeoScavenger comes to my mind, but I'm not that much into the genre, especially because of the uncontrolled Pvp.
Plus - happy cakeday! :)

The two I listed (Cataclysm and Project Zomboid) I would consider within the true survival.
You have to consider dwindling resources (notably food and drink) aswell as additional effects such as sanity, disease and more.

To a lesser extent you may consider Fallout New Vegas or Skyrim, especially when augmented with mods.

With all that in mind, I would say the criteria that add to the "true survival game" would be:

  • Limited resources (food/drink), potentially spoiling over time.
  • Diseases and similar afflictions, potentially permanent injuries.
  • Environmental hazards (heat and cold) aswell as weather.
  • Psychological elements due to stress, traumatic events or pure lack of social interaction.
  • Exhaustion, exposure and the overall wear and tear of trying to survive long term.
  • Reduced focus on combat, dying through combat - instead have it affect the player (injuries, trauma, stress) with exception of plainly being overwhelmed.

Anything that focuses on actually surviving. Rather than just fighting things off.
Or if there is fighting, consider the consequences of fighting to your psyche.

The Long Dark is working its way into that area aswell as development goes on.
Note how in TLD its rarely the fights (wolves or bears) that kill you, but rather the injuries and consequences AFTER the fight.

Lol, it was so late when I read your original comment that I haven't even realize you mentioned Don't Starve and P. Zomboid :) They indeed make sense a survival game, where the consequences and environmental things can kill you just as easily as an enemy, not to mention burning up all your stuff in Don't starve ;_;
And yep, I would most definitely add NEOScavenger - I had a character I felt really succesful. What did I achieve with it? Got a warm cloathing, some food, zippo and bottles (you need to boil, sometimes decontimate water) - and I survived a serious infection that nearly killed me. It was quite stessful to try to get into a city while losing more water than I could drink (Sometimes nasty, diarrhea-causing infection from unclean water) :D Little successes :)

Exactly, thats "surviving". Rather than the fighting that DayZ, Rust and so on tend to focus on.
I'd like to clarify again (since there will inevitably people that take offense), its not that these games are "bad" because of it.
Its just that they focus on different elements than actual survival.

They're just not quite like catching dysentery from tainted water.

happy cake day :)

btw, 7 days has food/water requirements and I believe stamina? I watch my brother play sometimes... they even recently added some temperature effects

It does have some of the elements, but by and large they (atleast in my experience) are not the driving force of the game.
The focus revolves very much around resource grinding and combat.

Which isn't bad per se, its just... Not what I would label as 'survival' when compared against Project Zomboid or its ilk.
7 Days to Die is very much a hybrid between genres.

oh OK, I misread what you were saying then. I do watch him play Don't Starve sometimes as well... I want to buy it, just not sure I would like it as much as he does.

None will ever be properly finished in a timely fashion. People will get bored and move one before they are done.

Played 7 days some months ago. Had a ton of fun, but as some friends and I tried to play it last week or so, it was kind of unplayable for anyone of us, no matter how good or bad our computers were. FPS drops, GFX glitches, crashes and freezes whatever we tried. We were able to play on a server with less then 10 players online though.

Rust is fun too, but it gets kinda repetitive since there is no real environment then other players. Server gets wiped once a month, everyone starts building and whoever finds the first heavy weapons/tnt dominates the server.

Never played DayZ

I know here's a lot of hate going around for DayZ, but if they manage to implement all that stuff they want(ed) to, it will kick major ass, bcause it will be grandeur.

So many replies, thanks! Well it seems there aren't many survival games that are sure of release. Probably Don't Starve Together and The long dark are one of the games that will actually get finished. Don't want to spend money on a game that will probably never be released (7days/Rust/Dayz?)

Id go for ARK Survival Evolved , still on Early Access, but almost daily updates, and slowly its turning on in a really nice game (besides it has dinosaurs, I`m sick of zombies for now...)

The only game i've actually played is rust. This game is really good maybe since it has no end no matter how powerful you're or how many friends you've someone will defeat you or a simple server wipe will make you start over.

The game can be tense most of the time and can easily make you rage quit since you start basically with a torch & axe. You'll need at least an hour to gather required resources for a small wooden shelter, campfire, sleeping bag.THAT'S if u're lucky enough not to face crazy dudes who'd kill you for fun or for simply stealing what you've collected. Not to mention if u're naive enough to pass by a large base as you'll most likely get shot and bleed to death. And even if you passed all this you still need to find blue prints & even more resources to upgrade your shelter and provide it with a lock pad.

I've tried to play alone and with my friends and in both cases it's fun but with friends everything becomes easier and you can actually progress more rapidly. It becomes even better if u're voice chatting with your friends using (Skype,steam....etc).I don't really recommend in game voice chat as it's a laggy and will attract raiders to your location.

The game gets an update every Thursday which adds new features, stuff or improve game animations, graphics quality, security & optimization.
ARK:Survival evolved seems to be good too.I don't have the game but i've seen some reviews and it seems to bee good in all aspects excluding optimization.
