I have been riding on Windows 8.1 for a while now and I haven't upgraded to windows 10 because many people have been saying it comes with compatibility issues. So is it safe to download yet or should I wait?

Should i download windows 10?

View Results
Yes, go ahead and download.
No, just wait.
Figure it out yourself, dummy.

That depends on what exactly you mean with compatibility issues. There will be some old games & software that won't run in Win 10, much like there were older software & games that did not work in 7, XP, or Win 9X.

Heh, I still remember that I had to boot in MS-DOS mode to play some of then-old games on my first Win95 PC.

Same here. Most DOS games started in Win 95, but those reliant on expanded or extended memory could be a bit wonky. And then there were all those games that just ended up running really fast as their speed was dependent on your clock speed. Some games specifically designed for Win 3.X could also be a bit problematic (these tended to not work at all in Win XP or later).

When it first came out, there were a couple issues. Not sure if it was the graphics driver or Win 10 itself, but the few issues I saw went away toward the end of last year with an update.

I've had a few games which were unhappy with 8.1. Many of those have the same issues with Win 10 but remarkably Win 10 fixed some of the ones which had problems for 8.1's duration.

I'm sure there will be a game here or there that will not work in Win 10 which did in 8.1, but overall, I find it better than 8.1.

Win 10 has been pretty stable for many months.

Installing it and getting it to work was a bitch for me (i think it was like 4 or 5 months ago, maybe more), but ever since i managed to get it to work i haven't experienced any issues

Hey guys, should I upgrade to Win 10 if my Win 7 works great and I'm used to it?

Definitely. Win 7 has its limits. Even though I was happy with it, I risked switching to Win 10 and I have no regrets whatsoever.

Windows 7 is getting too old, support for it will end soon and more issues with compatibility will pop up as time goes on. Gaming performance is better on Windows 10 as well.

I'm using W10 for 8 months already. Not a single issue encountered. I think it's safe for you to try it =). Can't be worse than 8.

As best as I understand it many of the issues come from the upgrade process not from the OS itself so if you do get it try for a clean install instead of upgrade. And off course do make an image of the previous OS if you want to restore even if you go with upgrade since the restore function also seems problematic.

Upgraded 1 month ago and had some issues. After a clean install all went fine. Only my internet adapter is not officially compatible with win10 and it comes sometimes to internet crashes if i overload it ( with videos and downloads )

Most likely driver issue. Try updating it.

Windows 10 offers the best performance for gaming and is heaps better than Windows 8.1 (this is coming from someone that still uses it on my laptop). Compatibility issues can usually be solved pretty easily, and any issues I've run into were fixed with compatibility mode. Definitely get it, it's the best Windows out right now.

Edit: It won't be free for much longer so I would upgrade now and if you for some reason hate it then you can always downgrade

Only issue I got with Win10 is that it eats 400 ram more and for no reason at all games eat ~1GB ram less... Idk if anyone else noticed that anomaly xD

Windows 10's Anniversary Update going to bump up RAM requirement a bit, but current version should stay the same.

You should never upgrade & you should keep making threads like these every two weeks because we never get tired of it.

You must be really important for MS to spy on you lol

It's called metadata and it's necessary to collect if you want the kind of connected experience Win 10 offers.

To date, all Windows versions had some kind of "spyware" implemented, the so-called telemetry.
But it's true that, while on Windows 7 it was really easy to delete the telemetry updates, on Windows 10 it's practically impossible.

Haven't had any issues with it after using for quite some time. It's like 8.1 except not terrible.

Heh, it was way better than Win8.1 the day it came out. If you were on Win7, then it would be a more difficult decision. 8.1 → 10 = nobrainer.

Windows 10 is a nightmare of evil proportions.

It does however function fine as long as you let it do what ever it wants, when it wants. As soon as you try to push back and gain control again, even with 3rd party applications, it comes back at you and the nightmare returns.
If you are like most casual users who just let the OS do what it wants, then you should have no issues at all. Just don't make the mistake of thinking that you are in control.

You gave us reasons, but no examples? Trying to tell a fictional story or trying to convince us?

Nothing fictional about it in the slightest. You can just browse many many webpages and see that people are not happy with how intrusive win10 and microsoft are. You are well aware of them and you are also aware of the user made programs available to try and stop it.

I gave up fighting the OS within a week and just cut my loss on the money I spent on it. Back to windows 7, at least, until microsoft invent some other reason to force people to "upgrade".

you made it sound like win10 is microsofts A.I. "let it do what ever it wants, when it wants".. you have privacy issues with it, ok. but to make it sound like windows 10 has a mind of its own is a little far-fetched. and btw you are in control, you control whether the pc has power at all or not.

Had to reinstall DirectX as well as update my graphic card (as well as the GeForce Experience software), but everything seems about fine

I have no idea about compatibility issues, but one essential component of the operating system is incapable of being fixed, namely its ability to guarantee a relatively high degree of security and privacy from others (including government agencies). Given that I consider those conditions to be necessary for me to consider any operating system worthwhile to use for general purposes, I would strongly recommend avoiding Windows 10 indefinitely. If you are, for some inexplicable and deeply concerning reason, unconcerned about those privacy and security issues, then I hope that Microsoft has at the very least resolved its compatibility issues in Windows 10. Then again, perhaps it would be better for everyone involved if they never do.

Never had any issues with it at all. I installed it one or two months after release on my laptop and installed it a couple of months ago on my gaming pc (also got a new win 10 laptop half a year ago). I have not experienced any incompatibily issues (or any other issue).
