I have been riding on Windows 8.1 for a while now and I haven't upgraded to windows 10 because many people have been saying it comes with compatibility issues. So is it safe to download yet or should I wait?

Should i download windows 10?

Yes, go ahead and download.
No, just wait.
Figure it out yourself, dummy.

There were never any compatibility issues to begin with, I play everything and I never had any problems.

what about old drms like SecuROM? i've read somewhere that M$ removed support for those, so you can't run old games (well at least those original, digital rereleases on steam/origin/uplay/gog probably will work)

This is true ... I personally don't care and use no CD crack. It is even more comfortable. Some publishers published patches for the old games to remove DRM.

to tell the truth, I haven't played anything from CD for quite a long time
but I also nearly always have used no cd cracks if the game was asking for it
it's good to know that there are companies that release those patches

XP.. shudder I mean it was a good OS (eventually, I remember XP RTM and SP1, made Vista look polished).. But it's scary now lol

10 isn't that bad. It's different, sure, and has a few less Techie-friendly (forced updates for example), but as someone who provides tech support to my family, and others, I know why they did it lol. Once you get passed the UI changes, it's really good imho :)

The only Windows OS that ever came out decent on day one was 7. People forget that.
Windows 95 took 2 releases, 98 needed SE, ME was never fixed, 2k didn't get good still SP2, XP was a nightmare in RTM and SP1, SP2 is where it became the OS everyone loved. Vista needed SP1, 8 was just messed up from the start.

As someone who has used every Windows on launch (and several times in Beta), Windows 10 is only second to 7 for release day stability, and thats only improving with the Nov update, and now the new Anniversary update this August.

Nope, I started with 95. Before that I used some old Mac's at school. Got some DOS/MSDOS and 3.11 experience on the awesome old Mac's that had the 386 card letting them run both OS's at the same time.. good times.

95RTM though.. oh man.. Plug and Pray indeed. Also fun times with ISA slots, and setting IRQ Switched on the cards so the modem and soundcard wouldn't conflict lol

I used PCDOS4 until MS DOS 6.22 came out - after that was window 3.1 then 3.11 for those network games, Doom 2 RoT etc - setting up the NE2000 cards was always a nightmare. 95 Made it easier. 98SE was probably the best OS Ever until you upgrade past a 400Mhz chip.
After that they all sucked ME was the worst - until 8.1 - that was good. But I've been using 10 now since release and It's very stable.
Just installed Ubuntu this afternoon though - and it was hell to start with - slowly getting there but I can't see myself getting rid of Windows for a while yet.

It's usable, but there are still issues present.

  • Start menu and many other windows based "apps" lock up. Like pressing the start button does nothing. I had to install a mod to fix this, it's still there since day 1.
  • Sound sometimes goes away completely without any warnings, never could figure this out, it's not a hardware issue, only way to fix it is with restart
  • Do you use OneDrive on 8.1 with the placeholders (transparent folders that indicate online-only)? They killed it in Win10
  • Win10 will decide for you what drivers should you use, problem is when you have it overrides working drivers with bad ones.
  • With major upgrades, Win10 can say "this program is dangerous" and disables it and archives it. example: CCleaner

Nothing locks up randomly and there's no problem with sound. Your Windows installation or hardware must be broken. You can turn off driver updates easily. But its true, that CCleaner can damage system registry. Also there's no need to use it. Even a registry full of trash and leftovers won't slow down your system :)

I get it all the time. A quick fix for lockup on start menu is to run powershell and paste

Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}

And before anyone asks, clean install. Happened on a laptop I upgraded, and a new computer I built.

It was never broken. There is the odd program that has issues, but as someone who has upgraded >400 computers to 10, apart from OEM Crapware, I've only come across 2 programs that had an issue, both office related, both XP erra.

Unless you are using really obscure and old software, it'll be fine.

Really the best thing you can do is upgrade, if you don't like it you have a few weeks where you can rollback to your previous version of Windows.

even if you don't want it ;P
why? upgrade to Win10, get the key/serial, reinstall to 8.1, you will use this key, when you will be sure, that you're ready for Win10
don't ask me how to get the key/serial, I've read it somewhere, you'll have to look for it yourself

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

yeah and don't forget to write down the previous OS code too, in case it will bug like mine and won't let you come back to it later =d

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

When W10 is installed, it validates with a server based on your PC components. So when you later re-install windows 10, skip the 2 places it asks for a serial and just install. Then when W10 is installed it will communicate with the server and see that your PC is validated and get the serial. Works if you want to do a clean install after the upgrade (like me).

Also if you have 'simple' XP software you need to run, you can always use VirtualBox (with 'simple' meaning that it has restrictions and lag, so you don't want anything with critical timing. For example an audio editor works in VirtualBox, the sound is just a bit later than it should).

Why would anyone want to reinstall to win8.1/win7? A reinstall wrecks the system, uninstalling all programs--it takes hours and hours to get the system back to its original state. I suppose one could do a full image drive backup, then restore the old image file.

After the free period ends you will have to pay to acquire the OS, that's logical. There is huge difference between that and having to pay a monthly fee to use it.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

They will charge companies monthly fee at some point (just like for Office 365) - people already found files with "substription fees" in Insider program.

The only question is - will MS start to require subscriptions for their service (when they already stated that they won't release WIn 11, so WIn 10 will be their last OS)? I find it probable. How else they're going to make money, when people won't have to buy new OS every 3 - 4 years? Only alternative are ads all over the system.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

There is a difference between companies and common users. I highly doubt anyone would pay a monthly fee to use a computer to watch cat gifs and play Candy Crush. I also doubt that Microsoft would even consider screwing their customers like that. Their PR would take a huge hit and we would see tons of people transfer to Linux.

As for the companies, I have no idea what they may do and I will avoid commenting on that.

Gamers won't turn to Linux, as there are no big AAA games on linux.

Elderly people won't change to Linux, as they were most of the time barely able to get how to use Windows menu start to open up google and browse through cooking recipes.

Lots of young people won't turn into Linux, as they are used to Windows, and they can'e even do something as basic as fully format harddrive. Not to mention install new OS which needs some tweaks.

So no, MS can do whatever it want and noone will stood agains them. As they have total monopoly on OS market.

And MS will find a way to monetize Win10. They're multi million company, which needs to constantly raise their income to make investors happy and pay them divident. They won't be able to do it if they will offer OS for free to >500 mln of users. So it's either ads or subscription.

Maybe it's gonna be "ads in some places and free OS OR small subscription and no ads". That's most reasonable way in my opinion.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I agree with your points yet I don't see MS forcing people to pay a monthly fee in order to use their OS. They had the absolute monopoly more than 10 years now, yet they never did anything like that. I just don't see them doing now either as it is a suicide.

BTW if this ever happens, the piracy on Windows would skyrocket (not that now it is not high).

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

People had different opinions back then and there was no high-speed internet. Right now it's normal to pay subscriptions to have programs, which don't belong to you in any way and you can't use them after you'd stop to pay for them. Office 365, CAD, Photoshop and so on are all based on subscription model.

Something which was unacceptable few years ago is normal now. Like multiplayer on PS. On PS3 it was free, and because it was "pay to be able to pay" on Xbox Sony changed their strategy and people started to happily pay for PS+ just to play in multiplayer games on their consoles. If it wouldn't be succesfull Sony would resign from it to rescue their PR and good name. But people pay for it without starting riots, Sony is making more money so everyone is "happy".

I was hesitant myself about whether to upgrade or not. I eventually did and I wouldn't say I ever regretted it.

IMO, it is extremely great OS. It is what 8.1 should have been in the first place. Only issue I came across with is the search which sometimes just outright refuses to locate an .exe but finds the folder the .exe is located in.

It can only find executables if the program is registered in the Start menu for some reason. Then again, I use an old-school two-tab file manager, so I don't care about Windows search issues.

Most hardware received some form of a driver, the old DirectX games not running issue was partly solved. Win10 mostly has the same issues as Win8.x now in this field, so if that was the only reason to hold back, then you can upgrade now.

My Vista crashed like 4 times in 3 years. Same for Win 7. Win XP was crashing a lot more, and one dead process was able to hang the the entire system. Win 8 I have skipped, because the new interface was too much for me. Win 10 is OK, nothing spectacular, but you can see improvement. Anyways, most people hating Vista had shitty low end computers, and the new OS was demanding (full of new features and stuff).

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I was using Vista for many years on something that I'd not call a low end computer. It had it's problems, mostly not responding processes that could just get your whole computer stuck but I'd not describe it as not usable as many people tend to do.

It was the step forward from the XP interface (which I really didn't like) and it was offering a lot of new features. It was indeed demanding for back then yet I don't think that this justifies some flaws it had. Thankfully they improved Vista and gave us W7 :D
