Good ol' Call Of Duty : Worl at war, Black ops and Black ops 2 have amazing zombie modes which can be a lot of fun if u get into story and easter eggs :)
I know for a fact WaW supports custom zombie maps, not sure about sequels doe :)

It's not as simple since there are skill trees and weapon mods, but Payday 2 is one I really enjoy. I have lots of hours in L4D2 and loved it. Also with Payday 2 don't get overwhelmed by the number of mods, the map mods are only needed if you plan on hosting the map yourself, you can still join random people (or your friends) who are hosting that map. Weapon mods are helpful but at first you wont need them. I would recommend getting the GOTY with some of the more helpful mods in it. It doesn't have zombies though lol, if you wanted zombies then Killing Floor.

it's also free to play this weekend, and I'm gonna support this as well.
Also, you can kinda think of the cops as zombies with guns, since they always chase after you

imho, give KF another shot -- once you get past the dark sludginess of the graphics, and realize that you run faster with the knife out, it can get pretty fun (granted, I've pretty much stopped playing now that they went a little nuts with the payed DLC, but I assume the core game is still mostly the same)
Tribes: Ascend also got too DLC-heavy for me, but was fun before that -- might still be worth a look; was pretty addicting for me for a while (100 hours on Steam, apparently, but I also played it quite a bit before it had it's Steam debut).

once you dig into KF, it becomes incredible like an extremely balanced fighting game
there is a lot of math in the difficulty scaling (every enemy has certain health based on total players, every weapon has damage based on your class & rank), you are responsible for all the skill (always go for headshots even with melee, it's not going to play for you like valve's bullet spread or have cheating AI like other games), a few of the enemies become quite terrifying when you see them coming & you're low on health, you can kite enemies around the map, it's just... great game design & mechanics, like doom1 or duke3d

It's been mentioned once before but I also suggest you give Contagion a shot ^^

I don't know what aspect of Left 4 Dead is what you like, but based on some reviews Dirty Bomb maybe can be up in your alley. At least in terms of it's a team-based FPS that's objective-oriented and needs/rewards teamwork. It's free to play, so nothing to lose. ( though no zombies, if you wanted that. As others said, Killing Floor / L4D2 are great picks. Probably Killing Floor 2 will be as well, currently the only thing people are complaining about is the lack of levels/content, but it's in EA. But fundamentally a good game, just wait until full release, I think.)
EDIT: maybe you want to stay away from Dirty Bomb for a while, seems like a playground for hackers.

I'm looking to get into FPS's again, but I was looking for something more simple and direct at first, with no crafting or things like that.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.
