Really, it all comes down to memorizing enemy movement and attack patterns. Took me about 15 hours before I got my first "win".
Also, when avoiding projectiles, a mistake a lot of people make is moving more than they need to. It's all about minor movements.

Yea. Try to keep the movements as small as possible. It allows you to continue shooting the enemy without having to re-adjust yourself too much. This is also why it's important to memorize how the enemies move/shoot.

The amount of times a greed head killed me from walking into the shots myself...

Honestly you just need to keep playing and keep trying. Over time you'll learn how to best avoid enemies and when to use items and what items to pick up and all that. You will get better just by practice.
I was really terrible at first as well but now i'm ok, still not great but at least i'm ok :P

Learn to give angular momentum to your shots, by moving while shooting.

Play in windowed mode, and have the wiki open to check if an item is worth picking up. Very rarely do I pick everything up. BoI is my most played game on steam XD
Try to do the challenges first, they unlock some pretty useful stuff.
As for the caves? Not sure if trolling. Wait till you get to The Depths or Necropolis

I wish i was trolling XD. The highest i've gone was The Cave II

That's alright then. Play a few more times for fun to see what RNGesus throws at you and to think on your feet. Worry about strategies later. Everyone has a different strategy. Good luck!

I always find that if I'm having trouble with getting farther, I spend a little time reloading Basement 1 until I get a good first room item that may help carry me through the other levels. Watching the patterns and movement of enemies is also good. If you're still running into trouble, go look for some videos of people's runs. I know several people that have done videos of movement patterns for certain rooms, and that might help a bit. Just keep at it and sooner or later you will get past the Caves.

Learn enemy movements and items through practice, or might learn a little by watching others play it, you might check out Twitch.tv (though most Isaac players are at TwitchCon atm.
p.s. you will very likely see 'spoilers' for the game if you watch others, and might be discouraged, so try the practice approach first

Practice. Its got a learning curve but I can get to mom almost every time now even with cruddy items. Just have fun with it bud.

Do not take damage.
Well exept that...Rebirth is a lot better and more user-friendly.
Also, you got only 3 hours, it took me about 10 to beat Mom and unlocking the final chapter. You just have to practice, avoid wikis and such if you can, so you can enjoy the pleasure of discover yourself.

l'll mod my other games, but DEFINITELY not this one. XD

Try to keep your distance from the enemies based on your tear range, the farther away you are more time to react and dodge incoming attacks.
Try to stay on the Right and Left sides of the screen you have more room to move from those walls instead of the top and bottom walls.
Save your money, at least 15 cents and look for stores to buy items, try to find the secret rooms, one is usually surrounded by lots of rooms in the floor and the other one is usually on a room that would not be conected to more than 1 room.
If you die dont get mad and keep trying, its hard to get used to the game specially the first flash one, this is a game where you learn a lot from experience and experimentation, its what makes Isaac so charming and fun to play.
My first Mom kill took me a whole lot of hours too haha, it seems pretty common for people to have problems with this game since its made to be unfair and unpredictable.
Have fun!

If you enjoy the game, I very much recommend you just Rebirth and play that. It's the same game, but in a new engine, tweaked mechanics, many more items, etc. It's better in every way.
That being said, the same advice applies:
A) Learn to dodge and don't take stupid damage. Stupid damage like running into enemies when you really don't need to be that close, running into rooms full speed and hitting spikes, stuff like that.
B) Use the wiki until you know all the positives and negatives of every item you come across. You don't want to take every item every time.
C) Make sure you don't take red heart damage on the second floor so you get your first Deal with the Devil... and then every floor after that. Always look for tinted rocks, buy a blue heart whenever you can, make sure you're never taking red heart damage as much as possible so you can get those Devil Deals.

Accidently met the devil when i was playing. It creeped me out. :/

The Devil Deals really are key to success. They give you the best offensive upgrades in the game. Your primary goal as you start a new game should be to secure a blue heart for the second floor so you can avoid taking red heart damage and get that Devil Deal. It's guaranteed on the second floor if you don't take red heart damage. You can't get one on the first floor.

Take your time. It's better to take fifteen minutes to clear one room with no damage than it is to clear a room in ten seconds but take a half heart of damage.
