Dual PSA: Angry Birds Space just got released on Steam today with a launch discount of -20%. I'm sure some of you would love to play it, for a measly 4 bucks.

All the Angry Bird games for free originally, but seems like Rovio now has a premium version.

With ads

Tbh, the ads don't bother me that much. It would obviously be better if they weren't there, but if I'm getting to play the game for free, they might as well get some revenue from displaying ads to the players.

They're always free on Android because when Angry Birds launched, there were issues with Google allowing paid applications from Finland, so it released as adware. They've since launched a 'Premium' version that removes the adverts.

Rovio have always charged for their games on iOS - any free releases are either promotions or Lite/Demo versions.

I've been meaning to make a thread about it, but I'd may as well just post it here. iBomber Attack is also currently free on the app store. I know it's on Steam, so figured some people may be interested in it.

I'm guessing they are permanently "free"/P2W now, judging by the exponentially expanding list of microtransactions now available for these games?

I doubt they would remain free for the base game on iOS. They do want to keep some profit after all.

No matter, they did charge for the game when it was first released on iOS and continued to do so. What makes you think they would just stop the money from flowing?

Who knows?

There are a number of notable examples where companies have stopped charging for games, and built a corpulent, perma-lactating cash-cow centred around microtransactions and in-game economies.

Granted, Angry Birds doesn't have quite the scale of in-game purchases that you might find in one of EA's money-grubbing IOS games, but now it's getting a bit long in the tooth, perhaps this is a way to wring some extra $$$s out of the idea while people are still willing to pay?

Congratulations!

I see now that I have made some small grammatical errors in that post, but it would be very mean to change things now. Oops... :P

They've dropped Rio and Star Wars to free on iOS before, and it wasn't permanent, so I wouldn't necessarily assume they're going to remain free forever this time.
