Happy to hear about your whiskey recommendations.

  • Talisker Storm
  • Laphroaig (14 yrs)

Also happy if you just enjoy the Blackguards mini train

Whisk(e)y I like the most - answer that gets closest :) (find the hidden potatoe!)

View Results
None, too strong for me
I'm not old enough for that devil's piss
Scotch (No Islays)
Scotch (Just Islays)
Just Blends with Coke
Only Bourbon (trivia: everytime a recipe says "bourbon vanilla", I stop reading after bourbon...)
Don't care, as long as it's rum or vodka

The only whiskey I can drink straight is Irish whiskey (I prefer Jameson). I had a bad experience (I got F'd up) on cheap whiskey for a friends 21's birthday a long time ago, and for a long time after that, even the smell of the stuff made me sick and nauseous.

Whisky is rather unforgiving if you abuse it... ;-/

A good whisky is something you want to take time over, just one or two glasses in an evening.

Mostly teenage Speysides for me (or 18-year-old Glenmorangie), with exceptions such as the "not-so-peaty Islay" Bunnahabhain and my "local" lowland malt Glenkinchie.

Not really a fan of whiskey (I prefer vodka, beer, and raki with honey), but when I drink whiskey, I sadly usually drink the commercial ones, like Johnnie Walker and Chivas. But I always drink it on the rocks, without anything else mixed with it.

Try replacing the ice with a half a teaspoon of water. I think you may be positively surprised.

Also, a Glencairn glass is much better for drinking whiskey than the typical straight-wall old fashioned glass.

Don't give up on whiskey just yet ;-)

I don't think that a glass will make me think differently about whiskey. :P About the water, why should I mix whiskey with water? Won't the vol lower and the whiskey will get a worse taste?

Have you tried drinking Cognac from a flat walled glass instead of a proper Snifter? Notice that much of the aroma and complexity are gone? Same thing with a Glencairn glass. Both BTW share a similar design that "focuses" the aroma directly to the nose.

As for water, I'm talking just a tiny bit. Half a teaspoon can make a marked positive difference. How does it work? I'm not sure, but going by reductio ad absurdum - if distilling further to 90% ABV would make a terrible to drink whiskey, and not doing it enough and stopping at %20 would again make for a terrible drink, then it's obvious that the optimum is somewhere in the middle. Is it necessarily the exact ABV that the whiskey has out of the bottle? That probably depends on the person drinking it. I don't believe it's unreasonable that different people have different preference, and that it's completely valid to prefer non-default ABV. From my experience a tiny amount of water does "open up" some whiskeys, while ice always kills any good whiskey, as the cold temperature has the same affect as trying to put good red wine in the fridge.

BTW, do you consider using treble, bass or custom EQ to be blasphemy and always listen to music with a flat EQ? :-)

Shit, you sound like an expert. o.O About glasses, there's hardly any difference when drinking from different glasses. We're not talking about different barrels, bottles, and things like that. We're talking about the glass, that you will pour your whiskey in for a few minutes till you drink it. How much will organoleptic characteristics get affected? About ice, it's mostly based on my personal preference. I love iced drinks and I dislike hot drinks. The only exception is raki with honey, because if you drink it when cold, it really sucks. xD You can only drink it when hot. Also, I never understood why people "taint" alcoholic drinks, like whiskey, with cola. That's like throwing mustard onto sushi. xD I didn't understand your music-related question. :P

I'm very far from an expert on this, but I do know one thing - skepticism can be detrimental to experiencing the good things in life, and this isn't limited to whiskey, glasses and water.

Thank you K! Enjoying that whiskey is pretty much like an Angel that's pouring nectar on your tongue! Sorry I couldn't resist, I'm bad! ^ ^

I know K, I wasn't even rattled by it even before I only saw that one word but know in all honesty that I like and respect you so you can say or ask anything at anytime. :-)

Also I'm a whine lover and I have a modest whine cellar but I also drink 3 strong drinks in modest quantities and that's the whiskey I just mentioned and Calvados and Armagnac.

Down side is that I'm not allowed to drink any kind of alcohol as long the you know what kind of Specialist forbids it. :-(

My father loves scotch, so I'm drinking it from time to time, but I'm not really a whiskey person.
I usually prefer transparent or light-colored alcohol, like Grappa or Slivovitsa.

I'm more a rhum man :) I'm not very fond of whiskeys, except...those from Islay. I never say no to a glass of Lagavulin (unless it's breakfast time, I'm not a monster ^^)

May I suggest you start a Rum thread? I'm new to the whole concept of sipping rum and was surprised to learn that I can actually enjoy it. Still clueless about the subject though.

When I'm rich, I'm going to open a whisky distillery on the Western Scottish Isle of Rhum, just to confuse people.

Very much enjoyed a Bowmore 12-year over the last few weeks. Also recommending Dalwhinnie 15-years, more fruity, less smokey though, which is usually the opposite of what I like.

Since there is not much difference in the taste even after being seasoned in cognac barrels and such, I would recommend going for the cheapest ones :D
my personal favourite is white horse :D and yes I have issues both with money and alcohol

Whiskey costs A LOT in my country, only whiskey I drink is Jack Daniel's. I like it very much.

We mostly drink Raki here, it's cheap and tastes great with certain foods.
