Whisk(e)y I like the most - answer that gets closest :) (find the hidden potatoe!)
I haven't heard of anyone mixing whiskey and coke. Not that it sounds bad, but I normally reserve that for low-mid rums. I like a good whiskey ginger or sour. Haven't had any that was great on the rocks yet.

I tend to prefer Irish whiskey over scotch or bourbon, because scotch and bourbon I find have a large disparity when it comes to prices for taste, at least over here

i only tried the quarter cask of laphroig till now - it was great
the 14yr is still on my wishlist

I've probably tried about 30 different whiskeys over the years, from cheap shit, to high-end stuff that predates personal computers*. I can tell there's a difference, but I just don't like them.
Cooking with whiskey, on the other hand....
*a wealthy friend once busted out a dozen of his finest whiskeys to try to convince me. It didn't work.

best whiskey I've ever drinked was Jack Daniel's Gentleman Jack. it is good pure or with anything you wanna mix.
since then, I only drink double mellowed whiskeys. Gentleman Jack still the best though.

Not really a scotch man at all. But bourbon is my drink. Makers Mark, Knob Creek, And Bulliet are 3 of my favorites.

Oh Laphroaig, how I love thee. But I've only tried the normal one, which is 12 years I believe. I*ve tried normal none peaty Whiskey's that are 21 years old (Grants), which is quite strong, but I've never tried an Islay Whiskey that is that old. Would be interesting, although I doubt 2 years makes a huge difference.

Impressed. The Ardbeg 10 is way too peaty for me. The only use I found for it is (gasp) to blend a tiny amount with cheap & bland blended whiskey (1 part Ardbeg to 20 parts cheap stuff) to make it more complex and interesting. This way I enjoy two bottles of whiskey / whisky I wouldn't otherwise have any use for - the Ardbeg, and a Jameson.
My go to whiskey is Talisker 10, which although quite peaty, is marvelous overall.

If you tried the Ardbeg 10 and liked it, but want to try something even smokier, try the Ardbeg Uigeadail (pronounced OO-GA-DAHL). It's fantastic. It's cask strength though, so it might take a little getting used to, but it's delicious even if you abuse it with some water.
I also second Yirg's suggestion of the Talisker 10. Very smooth, a bit salty, pronounced smokiness without going overboard. In my top 3 favourite Scotches, along with the Uigeadail. Not an Islay, but certainly worth a try even for people who swear by Islays.
McLoo, where's the "I like all kinds of Scotch" option? I've never understood the need for certain scotch drinkers to divide themselves into camps based on whether or not they like Islays. Some days I feel like a smoke monster, some days I feel like a Macallan 10.

cut and paste from a prior convo with McLoo...
I got my hands on two bottles of Crown Royal Winter Harvest. I cracked one open yesterday for a birthday sip. So good....

Chivas 18 is also pretty great. So FABulously smooth.
Also Glenfidditch 21yr. Had the opportunity to drink it once. Permanently ruined most of the cheaper stuff for myself. I blame my brother.

I just said scotch No Islays, since I have no idea what either is. I've had a "shot" of scotch (in one of those classic liquor glasses) before and, well, it's not that bad. Yeah, the scotch I had was kind-of strong for what it was, but eh. Besides, I've had some Kraken rum before and that shit tastes BAD and burns quite a bit. Kind of want to try fireball whiskey, though. As far as my experience with alcohol goes, my majority of alcohol drank has been beer and vodka.

Islays are from Islay in Scotland. They have a very peaty / smoky flavor: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islay_whisky

..except for this not-so-peaty Islay, which is one of my favourites: Bunnahabhain

Back in the day, I'd start a good night out with a shot of Laphroaig downed in one (I'm not generally a fan of peaty malts, and whisky-lovers will hate me for this whisky abuse, but the arousing sensations that this produced were a wonderful way to start a wild evening...).
