Yes it is worth it.
Just remember if you buy a wireless 360 controller you will need a reciever

The receiver is included in the box, if you buy the pc version.

Yes it's worth it, but get the wired controller, the cable is big enough so that you won't be too close of your PC/Xbox 360.

Yes. Most Steam games work with the controller by default, and for the games that don't work with the controller by default there's Xpadder (a fairly cheap solution) or JoyToKey (free).

A huge yes. Not for all games, but totally essential for some. Even if you spend all your birthday money on it, it's a purchase you won't regret.

It's pretty good for racing games but the DPAD sucks, you often press the wrong button while playing fighting games.

I recommend it, but I think you could prefer to wait until you can grab a Xbox One controller cheap (they will be compatible with the PC on early 2014, and the wireless one works with the PC) since the D-pad is just argh on the X360.

I enjoy the official USB XBox360 controller, if only because there is no set up required and games that benefit from a controller typically have some optimisation/options for it. It's nice having the on-screen button prompts match the actual buttons on your controller, for the case of those quick-time events~

By the way, the only Xbox 360 controller that is PC-ready is the wired one, you will need a receiver to use a wireless one. The Xbox One controllers only come in their wireless version, but you can connect those to the PC using any micro-USB cable.

Why not wait for the XboxOne Controller ?

More expensive, not extremely different, plug-n-play drivers possibly needing retooling

You could be waiting a while for that; MS pushed back PC support for that till 2014, and given the nondescript date it could end up being later in the year. If you need a PC-compatible controller right now, the 360 wired controller isn't a bad option. If money is tight though I might wait for the Xbox One version.

I was considering buying the X360 wired controller, but I still use my PS2 and so far I'm doing fine with my Dualshock 2, USB adapter and X360 CE. Works even on "X360 controller only" games like Castle Crashers, although it acts weird on Big Picture.
If you have neither a spare Dualshock nor an adapter, then I think the X360 controller is a great deal (24£ on Amazon).

You can get a wireless connector for cheap on Ebay ($10 or so with shipping from China). I find it better for some game's (Hotline Miami, Castle Crashers, Limbo, emulators) but not others (most shooters on PC since I'm used to the keyboard, most strategy games).

As a long time PC gamer I refused to get one for years since I prefer my keyboard and mouse for my games. However so many xbox games being ported over work much better on their native control scheme. Being able to play that at high resolution and their optimal input method is the best of both worlds.

Get this one.

Thats what I would do if I don't have one already, total customization for 30 bucks.

I use them for most games that seem to work better with them (sleeping dogs, super meat boy, etc) and I find them easier to use. I had a wired one from my 360 and used it for my pc now and I find it better then the controller I used before though that could be because its more older but, it honestly has no difference with a ps3 controller aside from 6 buttons to the left. Also, the controller might look weird to you at first because how its set up, but you wont notice a difference while playing
