The wired 360 pad works by default on HL2 and the Portals, and GTA4, and...every other modern first/third person PC game. As for the wireless one, MS don't make the PC receiver anymore so you'll have to gamble on chinese knockoffs (they're like fifteen bucks each, on top of the higher cost of the wireless pad. The wired one is plug and play; don't bother with the 'windows edition' version as it's more expensive for absolutely no reason.).

If a new game doesn't have decent 360 pad support I probably won't even bother finishing it. These things are that essential, in my opinion.

Yes. At this point I basically won't play a game if I can't use a controller (I understand the mouse/keyboard is optimal and is more precise but this is much more convenient)

Well, it depends on the game. For shooters, yes the mouse/keyboard is optimal. For platformers like Super Meat Boy? You'd be insane not to use a gamepad.

I recently bought a wireless 360 controller (here in the netherlands they are still common so no chinese knockoff needed ^^) and I'm very happy with it.
Works well and best of all, it works with every game I tested so far. (that had controller support at the very least, of course)
By far the most commonly used gamepad for games.

I might add that I did not have a controller yet, so I cannot tell how it would be versus using another controller and remapping programs. (This depends on the ease of use that these programs have.)

Been using a wired 360 since 2005. Love it. Most of the games actually show the Xbox 360 button icons, rather than the Button 4 thing.

Yes. For racing games and dark souls for sure.

I bought one with all my money and it is TOTALLY worth it. That and a PS2 controller are in my opinion the best gamepads you can get. And get it wireless so it's the best experience.

I'd wait till Xbox One is released. I think 360 controller prices will drop. Unless you can get one for about $30.

Yeah, this is a good shout, or pick up a cheap second hand one from ebay

You should be able to get one for like $35 and it's completely worth it. Works with most games nowadays

You don't NEED an Xbox controller. Personally, I like the PS3 controllers because they're smaller and more comfortable to use. For anyone wondering, I have decently sized hands, so they're not small. The Xbox controllers are fucking huge, though.

Just use MotionJoy (a.k.a. DS3 tool).

MotioninJoy is crap, never use it.

I have to disagree with xbox controller being huge.

But then again, my hands are big enough that I could use the original xbox controller comfortably...

The problem I see with the whole ' Get an Xbox controller! ' is that there's no difference from a PS3 controller other than placement of the analog sticks, and I think the buttons on the back of the controller. And, well, size. Compared to the PS3 controller, the Xbox controller is pretty big.

And also way to heavy imo (I have a wireless one), when I use my PS3 controller afterwards it feels like a feather :p

Still on PC... if have a PS3 controller it might be worth it but if you are planning to buy one an xbox one is the smarter move.

I got one for the simple reason that I have yet to find a game without native support for xbox controllers. Where there are a lot of games that don't support insert any other controller here natively.
Sure, there are programs around but I don't like needing 3rd party programs just to use my controller.

And like I said: for me the bigger size is a good thing.

yes it's worth it SO MUCH

i never used to like hack and slash games due to controls/camera positioning and stuff and once i got that xbox controller i was like "i missed out on so much good stuff". To me playing with an xbox controller feels a lot smoother for a lot of games i play, including skyrim, where only archery might be a tiny bit slower but the rest feels far more responsive/flued when played with a controller, same goes for most racing games and stuff too.

Plus a normal controller isn't good for every game out there, since there's a lot of games that are "buggy" if you don't use the right controller, i played dmc: Devil May Cry at a friend's once with a regular controller and my camera started spinning randomly... didn't have that problem at all with my other controller (we tested it thoroughly)

And last but not least, most games come with xbox controller support for the computer instead of ps2 controller support, button mapping automatically defaults to the xbox controller.

You played Skyrim with a... controller? I only played it on an PS and I almost broke the PS because of my nerves... I never tried to use my PC controller...

I'd say yes. + with a lot of titles, a lot have the profile pre-formatted so it is easy to use. I personally think its the best controller ever made. Fits my hands comfortably and has a good weight to it. I also had a 360 for 5 years prior to moving back to PC pretty much exclusively, so Im really used to it.

Good for platformers 2D (Super Meat Boy, They Bleed Pixels, Blocks That Matter and so on) and 3D as well (Alice: Madness return, Assassin's Creed series).
Prefer wired one.

**pretty much everything thats not a multiplayer fps, or a rts (starcraft), is better with a controller

i personally enjoy playing single player fps like fallout, skyrim, bioshock kicked back, with a controller

Same, although I use a melee only character on most of those titles.

I bought one 2 weeks ago, all I can say is if you got games that support it, you won't be disappointed. I got this one vs. a generic black or white one. Looks great and works great using the wireless reciever.

I use a wireless XBox 360 Controller and love it but I could go around using some generic Gamepad by using x360ce .. just google it it will make Steam believe your Gamepad is an XBox 360 one and will let it work with most games.

Get a Logitech F510 or F710 instead, it has

  • normal analog stick positions (like playstation)
  • better grip
  • works also for older games at a switch of a button
  • official tool to map keyboard to buttons for games that don't support controllers
  • it's a bit cheaper

It's worth every penny you pay for it. Native support for games, and cheap to boot(the wired one). The PS3 controller doesn't work as well as it natively for the PC and most certainly ain't as cheap(in the sense that it doesn't set up as easy and MotioninJoy may have a cirus).
