So Gamersgate is launching a platform named Void where you can play games for free but the catch is you have to watch ads in between gameplay

Article here

Countdown until Void launch here

It's also only going to be released in Sweden, USA and Canada, doesn't that just piss you off?

Edit: A few more countries have been added since I originally made the post: Denmark, Norway and Finland

Our ad-financed service, VOID will be released on May 28th in Sweden,
closely followed by the US and Canada.

Well that limits a good amount. We probably are asking way too much for a worldwide release.

It doesn't. I hate ads.

Same. I'm sick of being bombarded with advertising. I'd rather pay the money than listening to the same shitty ad about the same shitty product and how it's going to change my life.
I have so many adblockers on my browser that Lenin himself would be proud.

60 second ad. Go make a sandwich or goto the bathroom. From the site it sounds like there is only the 1 ad at startup and you are good to go

Only half an hour since the OP and they already added more countries. Also it asks to subscribe to get notified when it's available in your country so I think it's safe to assume they'll try to add even more countries to the list.

don't know why but it works from me even if I'm in Italy... btw I got a free beta code from IGN prime for it.

Holy crap, this for real? This seems way too good to be true. I mean, even if they're giving 30 minute ads, it'll be annoying, but still too good to be true ಠ_ಠ

I'm in the closed beta. There's certainly a selection, but the lineup is pretty much all old titles (~5-15 years). Maybe that's just for the beta, but I wouldn't expect any recent triple-A titles for the launch line-up. Currently it's stuff like Red Faction, Star Wolves, Cursed Mountain, and Abe's Oddysee. The most recent title I saw was Risen, from 2009.

Another catch is that it's ad-supported (ad in the downloader, unskippable video ad each time you launch the game). Also, you have a limited number of slots. If you download a game for free, it takes up a slot (your only slot) and is locked in for 2 weeks. After that, you can free up the slot and select another one, which in all likelihood invalidates your previous game.

You can upgrade those slots or get more of them, but both cost a decent sum of their Blue "It Ain't Money" Coins. 10k for another slot, and here's the current pricing for upgrades. (Empowered actually gives you another slot for a game in the same genre as the one in the upgraded slot, not just any game.)

that's just plain stupid, they want it free but end up free for 1game/2weeks, if you want more you need to pay us money$$$

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

You can keep a game as long as you want. However, you MUST keep it 2 weeks, so you can't just play a game a few minutes, get bored, and play a dozen more in an afternoon, you have to pick which ones you legitimately want.

Thanks for the low-down, friend. I was curious as to how this would work. Is there any ad watching mid-game ever? Or do you get that ad stuff out of the way at the beginning, in the game-load stage?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Not that I noticed. There's a pre-roll ad that, according to them, can be up to 60 seconds long. Maximum I've seen was like 10-15, though.

Still, don't give them ideas.

I imagine there are legal and financial realities to consider. It's not that they hate your country folks.

you don't know that. I'm bet that they're willing to give up a huge sack full of money from potential revenue because when they were younger a kid from your country here pulled down their pants.

Normally you'd pay for the games, but with this they let you voluntarily get brainwashed with advertisements instead.

So kinda like YouTube, or every website ever. But with that kind of attitude, you're probably a fellow adblocker.

Also, I'm feeling no urge whatsoever to take advantage of NordicBet's brand-leading online entertainment experience and amazing returns at respectable odds.
