Yesterday I received my Steam link and controller.

I've been playing around with it a bit and my 2 sons were more than excited about it.
The games I have installed arent really suitable for kids though.

I'm sure we have some gaming parents here on Steamgifts.
Which games should I get or instal?

We tried Lego Jurassic but that was too hard (language)

EDIT: Some nice suggestions I will check out. Thanks all!

Hm, in that age probably nothing text-based. So the question is what difficulty level you want to present them. Personally I would suggest:

It is quite easy all the time and has a very charming character. If you ignore the ever-growing hunger and the destruction coming with it it is extremely well suited for kids. Other than that lot of platformer work also without text like:

But they have quite high difficulty spikes in certain places.

Some may have already been suggested, just listing stuff out that I've played that kids possibly could enjoy as well:

  • Castle of Illusion
  • Epistory: Typing Chronicles (although I don't remember if there was a difficulty slider)
  • Human: Fall Flat
  • Octodad: Dadliest Catch (you can change the difficulty to easy or play with your kids)
  • Overcooked
  • Poi
  • RollerCoaster Tycoon series (it's what I played as a kid)
  • Scribblenauts
  • Slime Rancher
  • Starbound
  • Terraria
  • The Sims

Even more kid friendly games that come to mind (that I never played) would be:

  • any HOGs
  • anything in the LEGO series
  • anything from Humongous Entertainment (Freddi Fish, Pajama Sam, Putt-Putt, Spy Fox)
  • Costume Quest
  • Draw a Stickman
  • Peggle
  • Plants vs Zombies
  • Teddy Floppy Ear series (the games are extremely cheap at the moment)
  • World of Goo

Was looking if someone mentioned octodad. With one controller (also in coop with me btw) my kid liked that game a lot (and she already knew it from youtube).

Disney's Aladdin. Probably best to get their first rage quit experience early so they don't grow up breaking tvs/monitors with their controllers :p.

Honestly though, played that as a kid myself and I could never finish the game. Damn Capet Ride is hard D:

I don't know what genres your kids like, but I particularly enjoyed DRAGON: A Game About a Dragon. It's a very cute platformer game with crayon-drawn settings, and while there's things to read between stages, it's not necessary to enjoy the game itself (assuming your language comment was from difficulty reading).

I am really not sure if kids 4 and 7 years old would understand all the mechanics in Stardew Valley. The game looks cute but it is not for small children.

Totally not, sorry. Too complex for 4

Maybe seven is a bit too young or maybe Stardew is more complex, but in defense of that being recommended, I played Harvest Moon as a pretty young kid and had no issues with it.

Castle of Illusion?

I used to have a lot of fun just playing Lemmings with my Dad even though I wasn't really "playing" it was mainly him. So have you thought about playing a single player game "together"?

I'd suggest Wuppo, but the difficulty might be only suitable for the 7yo. Generally pretty good but might take a bit of grappling to get past certain bosses. Otherwise it's lighthearted and cutesy fun.

As a few people have mentioned, you could take a look through the "educational" and "family friendly" tags on Steam

For specific games, A Hat in Time is in the family friendly tag. Heck, that's in my own wishlist.

Spore's good. I played that as a kid. Possibly The Sims.

A few basic games you can get pretty cheap, although they aren't the best, are Abrix for kids, It's Spring Again, and ABC Coloring Town.

Kid-specific games that I own and the kids played (at least to some extent):

The LEGO games are great. LEGO Marvel Super Heroes is our favourite, but if you're worried about language (not that I remember anything I felt was problematic), the older LEGO games, such as Star Wars, Batman, Harry Potter, have no voices. Co-op, which is always nice (for playing with siblings, friends or parents.)

My 7 year old son is currently enjoying Disney Infinity 3.0, although that's a little too Star Wars oriented for him. There's also Infinity 2.0 and 1.0, but I haven't personally experienced them.

Castle of Illusion, DuckTales Remastered are classics. Didn't get that much play time though.

We finished Never Alone (Kisima Ingitchuna). Co-op.

Rollers of the Realm is great, and both my son and my daughter enjoyed it. Can be played co-op although it's not a good experience.

They're currently playing RiME. It's nice so far.

Rayman Origins is great. I got that for free on Uplay, and we played it quite a bit. Only problem we encountered is a mid-game crash we couldn't get over. I'm not sure if that's hardware specific or Uplay specific or what, but up to that point we had a lot of fun. Co-op.

Scribblenauts unlimited is fun for a bit.

There are some kid adventure games. We played some Teddy Floppy Ear but didn't finish a game. They also played and finished Withc's Pranks: Frog's Fortune.

Toki Tori and Toki Tori+ are decent, but also didn't play through them.

Brothers - A Tale of Two Sons is a good co-op game when played with two people on one controller, though it's a little bit cramped.

Divide by Sheep is decent enough for a 7 year old.

Home Sheep Home 2 is fun.

Zoombinis, well, we didn't play that much of it, but it's okay.

That doesn't completely cover everything my kids played, but it does cover a lot of it. Whether things fit depends on you and your kids. Certainly it's much easy to effectively address the 7 year old than the 4 year old, but most of these games were played by my son before age 7.

My little sisters and brothers loved playing Castle Crashers, Jamestown, Awesomenauts, Broforce, and Sonic All-stars Racing Transformed. They are aged 8-14. Not sure of what amount of violence you allow the games to have but Castle Crashers and Broforce both are beat-em-ups.

I play with my daughter (6,5y) for a few years, from quite a time she plays mostly single handed but need help with some more hard situations
Games we played:
Need for Speed
Castle of Illusion,
DuckTales Remastered
Giana sisters: twisted dream
Marvin's Mittens
Rayman Legends and Origins
Trine 1-3 (quite hard for kid but she loves just to wonder in there)
Sonic All Star Racing (hit for about 2 years, she plays most times this game)
The Maw
Teddy Floppy Ear series (she liked it a lot about 1,5y ago)

Seems a lot but we play only from time to time, never more than 1h so of course we didn't end most of this game
