I'd say so. It's a proper, non-F2P game, permanently free. We could discuss fine semantics, but I think the thread belongs in the category.

It shows as complimentary and removable to me, like all games which don't have a price on Steam. No?
Comment has been collapsed.
i'd say it's clearly not. it's a f2p game, it's not a deal in the usual sense. people expect to see reduced games or temporarily free games here.

In the gaming world, F2P indicates a business model and a way to design games around microtransactions, things this game has nothing to do with. You wouldn't call Bioshock a jump n' run game just because you can, well, jump and run. This is game is just free and a permanent deal is still a deal. People were happy to find out about this and that's what matters the most, in the end. :)

don't get me wrong, i think it's nice that you raise awareness for this title, that seems to be a really good free game. but you should do it in the general section. i still think people want deals here. deals in the sense that you can get something for a limited amount of time that you normally can't get so cheap. a special price, or a limited offer to get a game free that usually isn't. this game just doesn't fit here. i always get annoyed when people post regular free games here, and i know i am not the only one.

I still disagree, but hey - nice discussion. :) I was actually quite surprised no one had posted about this game before me and I guess it won't happen often that I break news like that - off the hook! :D

yes, absolutely. we can agree to disagree, and that's fine. :)

Not really, there are literally hundreds of games on steam that are F2P without microtransactions, by your definition all of them should have a separate "deals" thread on SG. This might be a good game but a permanently F2P game cannot be called a "deal".

Again, Free and F2P mean two different things in the gaming world. This game is Free and not F2P.

Again permanent Free games are just that "Free" not a deal. A deal is when you are getting a product or a service for less than what it generally costs.

Already put it on my list. Seems like a good game, was surprised it's free.

Played this for 75 minutes. It's definitely a good free game, but I'm not sure I'll finish it. You play as a pregnant woman in a horror scenario, and the voice acting and sound design are good, maybe too good so it makes me uncomfortable to imagine a pregnant woman in such a scenario. I guess I'm just too sympathetic, but to everyone else this is a great deal.

Seems permanent to me. They have a Kickstarter for another game and this one probably exists to gather attention and make use of existing assets and code.

I believe it's permanent - I am a friend of the developer of STASIS. He actually released this to coincide with the release of the Kickstarter campaign for the next game both he & his brother are working on together, which is called Beautiful Desolation. They don't have a technical demo ready for the new game they are working on, so CAYNE is kind of like a showcase for what they can do in Unity. STASIS was developed in another game engine called Visionaire Studio, which isn't as flexible as Unity because it's for 2D/2.5D Point & Click games only.

Awesome...tell you friend that STASIS was awesome and the fact that CAYNE is free is even better. What great devs!
I don't usually back games on KS any more, but I might have to make an exception here.

Well, it's good to hear that they get rid of that engine they used in STASIS, because great art was ruined for me because of horrible upscaled 720p resolution, it was blurry mess. I'm afraid to even imagine how STASIS looks on 4K screen.
Edit: i google and find out that Daedlic created a lot of their games on this engine, and they all looked great. Well then, i just hope that STASIS creators at least target 1080p this time if they'll go again with fixed resolution.

I actually kind of work for THAT engine. Oh well...
It was Chris' choice to make STASIS at the resolution he used. It might have had something to do with him working on it for quite a few years, though as far as I'm aware we've had 1080p resolution support & higher for quite a few years now. I don't think 4K resolutions are supported though 1080p game should probably scale up but would no doubt look pretty terrible.
Quick note #1: STASIS, while the graphics may have been created with 3D graphic software (3ds max I think it was) were exported out into individual image files to create a 2D game.
Quick note #2: 2D games can be resource hungry beasts depending on various factors such as default game resolution, amount of images / animations on screen at any given time & the amount of frames in said animations. I'd dread to think how much VRAM & stuff you would need to play an animation heavy 2D game with 4K resolution.

STASIS had a lot of flaws, but for free it should be fine, especially since devs didn't add any moronic suicide achievements this time. Not going to play it myself anyway after i burned with STASIS

I thought the suicide achievements were pretty fun. What didn't you like about them?
Comment has been collapsed.
I hate them because
Not to mention that doing suicide is very far from "fun" definition in my opinion.
Comment has been collapsed.
Well I certainly can't argue #1. They certainly have nothing to do with the story or realism, and feeling like you have to try crazy, dangerous things to get the achievements can break immersion.
Because I wasn't a backer, I'm not familiar with the achievements' role in the KS. But one of the possible (good) uses of achievements, IMO, is to get the player to try things s/he might not otherwise have tried. They weren't meaningless, like "open and shut the door 10 times in a row to get the 'Indecisive' achievement." They were also fun visually and fit with the macabre aspect of the game.
Anyway-- different strokes for different folks. :)

There is no spoilers in my post, i used only information known from first 5 minutes of the game.

Oh wait, i read it again, one detail can be considered as spoiler, sorry for that. But there is still nothing major, i didn't said what exactly will happened (and that will be really unexpected thing, i assure you). Maybe this game not very good in technical and gameplay therms, but story is definitely have some surprises and fucked up in good way.

Awesome, thanks for the info ! I really loved Stasis, I'll give this one a try ASAP :)

Thanks for the heads up. This actually looks interesting :-)

This looks like a good game, I'm surprised they released it for free. Thanks for the info, I never heard of it before now :)

I think they might be doing this for free to help promote their new Kickstarter campaign here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/bischoff/beautiful-desolation-isometric-post-apocalyptic-ad
EDIT: I see someone else mentioned it as well, maybe add it to the OP?

Haven't played the game yet, so I'll keep it brief. At least it's not the usual shovelware, but an actual game from a developer with a name and a reputation.
CAYNE
The devs have a Kickstarter running for a game currently in development, set in the same universe as CAYNE: BEAUTIFUL DESOLATION - Isometric Post-apocalyptic Adventure
