I don't have an android or iOS phone, so I must wait long time to see my itens selling in the market. I downloaded an Android Emulator, so I could have SteamGuard and sell the itens faster.

BUT

Sometimes I'm not at home and need to login on Steam to accept a gift, a friend or anything like that, and i remotely deactivate SteamGuard.

AND

After that, I need to wait like 15 FREAKING DAYS to use the market again, even if I reactivate the SteamGuard again before! This annoys me so much, 'cause I have like hundreds of cards now, and can only sell them after February 28! Why Steam make me suffer like this?

The point is: 15 days is ridiculous. 7 days would be fine to recover an account and stuff, but HALF A MONTH is annoying, yes... I like the security stuff, but the downsides when you face then are a reaaaal bother.

for 10 out of the 12 years i had the steam account steamguard didn't exist and i never had my account hijacked with email authentication. i'm not saying that the steamguard is any less secure, it's clearly even more secure then that. but i do see their point, it's over pushed (way too limited if you don't use it) for something that isn't entirely necessary. there could be some limitations on email auth over steamguard auth, but it's a bit overkill as it is.

My issue is: There's a sale ocurring. My top 1 wishlist game is 90% discount. I can't use my PC 'cause I'm in a shitty travel with family and won't go back home in time to buy it. So, I CAN buy it via my cellphone (wich doesn't have the Steam App to download for some shitty inconvenience).

BUT, by doing it, I need to remove my mobile authenticator, AND getting 15 days of market lockdown from the moment I get back home and activate the authenticator again, just because Steam doesn't give real attention to customers.

Annoying, to say the least.

Same as d3m4n here. Only very, VERY dumb people can get their account stolen, and yes, I got someone trying to steal mine in the past when Steamguard didn't exist, but nobody could. Imagine why?

They could just use what even banking sites uses, the usual code sent by SMS that everybody can receive without the need to buy the overrated smartphones.

Anyway, because of other reasons, I purchased a good smartphone from China this year, spending just 41€, so that problem is solved for me, but I have used an emulator too before when I needed it because some stuff was expiring.

It's really sad that because most Steam users out there are so dumb, everyone else has to pay :/

By no means should treat people who don't have them as second-class customers.

Running an Android emulator only to authenticate is a waste of resources when you can use one of those options. If you still like to use it, look if there's a way to make it portable to save it to a USB flash drive.

Is it possible to have WinAuth and mobile authenticator enabled at the same time? I'd love to have a windows version so I wouldn't have to play hidden objects around the house each time I want to confirm something. But at the same time a game of mine (CS:GO) requires mobile authenticator for certain game types.

If yes, is it the "Import Android" thingy?

Yes, if you import from Android, WinAuth essentially duplicates that and acts like a second authenticator. You can use your phone and WinAuth in parallel.

Most importantly, Valve needed an excuse not to provide support to people who got screwed. And now they got an excuse.

"You used SGMA and got screwed anyway? Well, you took all responsibility by accepting the ToS, so, no support."

It's not making steam safer. And it somehow even make it more unsafe - many people who don't have android/iphone have to use emulators on PC, and this way if pc is infected (which is, actually, was only way to "hack" steam before) - authentication data is available to fraudster, unlike email steam guard. So, by making mobile authentication compulsory, Valve leaves some people unprotected.

Well, steamguard itself is not a bad idea, BUT making mobile authentication compulsory (because, come on, making escrow was just a way to make your steam usage unbearable without 2fa) is bullshit. E-mail based steamguard worked just fine, and if you compare it to an android emulator or software like sda or winauth it is even more secure (because, you know, if your second factor in 2fa is phisically placed on the same PC - it's much less secure then email on some third-party server). I'd be glad if people could chose between email-based and mobile-based 2fa, but Valva asks noone, they just do what they want.

Yep, but the wait time was annoying, so I downloaded the android emulator, and wait is gone... Then I needed to remove mobile authenticator and got lockdown in the market for 15days...

The time you activate the authenticator, you need it to login everywhere from then on...

Steam guard is something not to protect us, but to protect Valve. How many people was scammed and left crying in valves ears... Now, if someone scam or hack you, if you dont have the Steam Guard on, they wont do a thing to solve your problem. Just like a insurance policy "if it didnt happened the x way, we wont do nothing."

Do you have a Windows Phone with Win10 Mobile? It's on there too.

There's also a desktop authenticator that gets the job done if you don't have a smartphone.

Downloaded the desktop authenticator... My Windows Phone is 8.1 and it doesn't show Steam app nor even the unnoficial one... I'm trying to see a way to update my phone to Win10 so it MAYBE solve my problem...

Which model phone do you have? My service provider refused to push the update to my Lumia 640, so I cheated and used the Windows Insider program. You might be able to do that on your phone. Just use the Release Branch to avoid the bugs ;)

Oh yeah, they said the 630 isn't compatible. So that option won't work. If you're willing to fork over the money, you can get the 650 from the Microsoft store for about $130. It comes with win10 and it's really nice.

My phone is really old, 7 years already. Steam Guard is utter garbage, takes centuries to confirm anything.
I wish it wasn't obligatory =_=

+1

Though my phone isn't that old. It's a rare thing if I get something confirmed without seeing the "try again later" message. Also, more of then than not the confirmation page comes up empty even if I get the "you have actions to confirm" notification. Frustrating!

Oh yea totally. I have to terminate the app process and start guard again to confirm anything.

I don't own a phone (mobile or landline - by choice). I use Steam Desktop Authenticator. I've only had to set it up once. I built a new pc a little while ago & I just copied over the files for it & I didn't even have to set it up again. I like using it as it has an option to auto-confirm all market items I list waiting for confirmation without me having to confirm each & every single one of them one by one. I only run the app after I'm done adding items to the market then I turn it off once I'm done.
