Do you like Steam Guard?
for 10 out of the 12 years i had the steam account steamguard didn't exist and i never had my account hijacked with email authentication. i'm not saying that the steamguard is any less secure, it's clearly even more secure then that. but i do see their point, it's over pushed (way too limited if you don't use it) for something that isn't entirely necessary. there could be some limitations on email auth over steamguard auth, but it's a bit overkill as it is.

My issue is: There's a sale ocurring. My top 1 wishlist game is 90% discount. I can't use my PC 'cause I'm in a shitty travel with family and won't go back home in time to buy it. So, I CAN buy it via my cellphone (wich doesn't have the Steam App to download for some shitty inconvenience).
BUT, by doing it, I need to remove my mobile authenticator, AND getting 15 days of market lockdown from the moment I get back home and activate the authenticator again, just because Steam doesn't give real attention to customers.
Annoying, to say the least.

Thanks for what ? Explain me what are you thanking for ?
they are thanking me for backing up their point.
just cause you are lazy as fuck and cannot be asked to spend 30 second in confirming a log in you made a topic to cry about HOW USELESS the thing is ... Con fucking grats son
comments like this is why i see you consistently asking people "why am i blacklisted"... you're just so damn rude everytime you speak.

Same as d3m4n here. Only very, VERY dumb people can get their account stolen, and yes, I got someone trying to steal mine in the past when Steamguard didn't exist, but nobody could. Imagine why?
They could just use what even banking sites uses, the usual code sent by SMS that everybody can receive without the need to buy the overrated smartphones.
Anyway, because of other reasons, I purchased a good smartphone from China this year, spending just 41€, so that problem is solved for me, but I have used an emulator too before when I needed it because some stuff was expiring.
It's really sad that because most Steam users out there are so dumb, everyone else has to pay :/

4 years ago ? dont think so :)
Dont get me wrong , i get the part where it can be annoying and stuff ....
But as someone who lost couple years worth of games i rally think its the lesser evil ... and complaing about minor inconvenience triggers me a lot :)
Comment has been collapsed.
Sure, but when you get in the view of someone who doesn't have a way to use mobile authenticator propperly, you know the inconvenience becomes a hell and you hate the idiot's who tough that 15 days of lockdown was fine for the users who may have a problem...

But WP has Steam app aswell.

Only problem is, if you don´t have smart phone.
Comment has been collapsed.
And if you try to find it through google/microsoft website in your mobile phone? With unofficial app I had same problem in the past. But when I got to the website, I can download it without problem.
Otherwise you would need to upgrade to W10. Wish I could help you some way.

Windows Phone only downloads apps by the store... :/
Any other way of downloading an app would be like instaling an unnoficial PC program, using my phone's usb, downloading a file to pass it to my phone and hope to not destroy it in the process... :(
Also, seeing a way to update to WP10 in the time being...

By no means should treat people who don't have them as second-class customers.
Valve should have made it optional, like Blizzard did. Their authenticator was a great success, and yet not having it doesn't cut you off from using any elements of Battle.net.

Tell me about it. I have a phone, but it's really bad and doesn't last very long without battery power (we're talking about 5 minutes if I'm lucky). I always mentally groan whenever I need to log into steam but realized I forgot to charge my phone beforehand.

Is it possible to have WinAuth and mobile authenticator enabled at the same time? I'd love to have a windows version so I wouldn't have to play hidden objects around the house each time I want to confirm something. But at the same time a game of mine (CS:GO) requires mobile authenticator for certain game types.
If yes, is it the "Import Android" thingy?

Awesome, cheers! I only hesitated because of that! (Köszi még egyszer)

Another issue is you need a capable phone to even use the phoneless options (something I do not have). I have a VOIP line (that can get SMS) but VOIP is not allowed.
Edit: Pay as you go phones don't work either, and a basic cellphone plan for the SMS is too expensive coming in at just over $100 a month for something I have not needed before this.

I can understand why free VOIP websites that share the number with anyone who connects to the site, not sure why a private VOIP number isn't allowed. It's my home phone number after all.

I heard that there is no official Steam app for WP.

Most accounts were stolen by phishers and not malware anyway, sooooo..... SGMA doesn't help here.

I guess it's only for newer versions then?

Nope. I need to enter in the mobile authenticator to get the code, or CANCEL TOTTALY THE MOBILE AUTHENTICATOR, so I can use my phone message or e-mail authenticator and, with that, get weeks or a month to use the market again to sell game itens/cards.

And those 15 days are the annoying and bothersome part... Yep it IS annoying... A lot of people think it too... 7 days would be better as it is a good time to recover an account and you don't need to waste time waiting to fully use it again...
Comment has been collapsed.
The way SGMA is forced on you is why I haven't spent a single cent on Steam store since they introduced the 15-days wait thing. I use it, but I refuse to support Steam anymore. Almost every game is a Steamworks game these days, you can get them elsewhere easly. Or on GOG. Win-win.

You could do like I do, I've got mine on a tablet I picked up from Walmart for $30 on clearence :)

Yeah, my phone doesn't do Steam but I grabbed an older reconditioned Android tablet off eBay dirt cheap that is useful for a whole bunch of stuff (not just porn).

Well if you dont want to get some sort of portable desktop authenticater you can go to your accout management page and get a couple of backup codes. These are valid as steam guard codes until you use them -> https://store.steampowered.com/twofactor/manage

I have an awesome smartphone, it just isn't compatible with the Steam app...

Not owning a smartphone
Is totally legit. Some people have no use for smartphones, as simple as that. I prefer battery life. Hell, if they weren't so old (no new ones made), I'd be still using my Nokia E51.

Most importantly, Valve needed an excuse not to provide support to people who got screwed. And now they got an excuse.
"No SGMA? Your fault."
"You used SGMA and got screwed anyway? Well, you took all responsibility by accepting the ToS, so, no support."

It's not making steam safer. And it somehow even make it more unsafe - many people who don't have android/iphone have to use emulators on PC, and this way if pc is infected (which is, actually, was only way to "hack" steam before) - authentication data is available to fraudster, unlike email steam guard. So, by making mobile authentication compulsory, Valve leaves some people unprotected.

+1 been using WinAuth for a long time. It's great.

There's a Steam app on Kindle. I use it for auth. since I don't have a smartphone. Thought I'd make the suggestion just in case.

The hassle of switching phones is too annoying imo. I have one phone that I only use for the Steam app, I learned that the hard way. Once had a problem because I sold one of my phones but I didn't deactivate the steam guard, I did a factory reset and couldn't access the Steam app anymore had to contact support. Took way too long for them to answer all in all wasn't able to access market for a month. Sigh, I wish there was an option to disable this crap.
Comment has been collapsed.
the app gives you a one use code to disable the steam guard in the same tab that generates the codes to login, it has a red border and it says please keep this code somewhere safe. heck steam also let you generate around 30 1use codes to login in case you dont have access to your phone

Well, steamguard itself is not a bad idea, BUT making mobile authentication compulsory (because, come on, making escrow was just a way to make your steam usage unbearable without 2fa) is bullshit. E-mail based steamguard worked just fine, and if you compare it to an android emulator or software like sda or winauth it is even more secure (because, you know, if your second factor in 2fa is phisically placed on the same PC - it's much less secure then email on some third-party server). I'd be glad if people could chose between email-based and mobile-based 2fa, but Valva asks noone, they just do what they want.

Not to mention not everyone can afford a smartphone.

Please clarify, but you can't sell games on the market, and you don't need the authenticator to buy games. I may be misreading, so if you meant something else let me know.
Comment has been collapsed.
Really? When I didn't have the authenticator enabled, I just set it to remember me. Then I went home and accepted everything. Or just use email to log in and put up with the wait.
Comment has been collapsed.
Yep, but the wait time was annoying, so I downloaded the android emulator, and wait is gone... Then I needed to remove mobile authenticator and got lockdown in the market for 15days...
The time you activate the authenticator, you need it to login everywhere from then on...

Steam guard is something not to protect us, but to protect Valve. How many people was scammed and left crying in valves ears... Now, if someone scam or hack you, if you dont have the Steam Guard on, they wont do a thing to solve your problem. Just like a insurance policy "if it didnt happened the x way, we wont do nothing."

Do you have a Windows Phone with Win10 Mobile? It's on there too.
There's also a desktop authenticator that gets the job done if you don't have a smartphone.
Comment has been collapsed.
Which model phone do you have? My service provider refused to push the update to my Lumia 640, so I cheated and used the Windows Insider program. You might be able to do that on your phone. Just use the Release Branch to avoid the bugs ;)
Comment has been collapsed.
Oh yeah, they said the 630 isn't compatible. So that option won't work. If you're willing to fork over the money, you can get the 650 from the Microsoft store for about $130. It comes with win10 and it's really nice.

+1
Though my phone isn't that old. It's a rare thing if I get something confirmed without seeing the "try again later" message. Also, more of then than not the confirmation page comes up empty even if I get the "you have actions to confirm" notification. Frustrating!

I don't own a phone (mobile or landline - by choice). I use Steam Desktop Authenticator. I've only had to set it up once. I built a new pc a little while ago & I just copied over the files for it & I didn't even have to set it up again. I like using it as it has an option to auto-confirm all market items I list waiting for confirmation without me having to confirm each & every single one of them one by one. I only run the app after I'm done adding items to the market then I turn it off once I'm done.

I don't have an android or iOS phone, so I must wait long time to see my itens selling in the market. I downloaded an Android Emulator, so I could have SteamGuard and sell the itens faster.
BUT
Sometimes I'm not at home and need to login on Steam to accept a gift, a friend or anything like that, and i remotely deactivate SteamGuard.
AND
After that, I need to wait like 15 FREAKING DAYS to use the market again, even if I reactivate the SteamGuard again before! This annoys me so much, 'cause I have like hundreds of cards now, and can only sell them after February 28! Why Steam make me suffer like this?
The point is: 15 days is ridiculous. 7 days would be fine to recover an account and stuff, but HALF A MONTH is annoying, yes... I like the security stuff, but the downsides when you face then are a reaaaal bother.
