...in other words, if you find it ridiculous, then ignore it and move on. It's most often used as a metric of whether the user is active or not.

I agree with what you're saying. If it's a huge giveaway, or the OP says something to those who are entering, then I'll say thanks or answer some of their questions. I don't like the whole idea of spamming meaningless words in order to gain more things

or you don't like the idea to spend a bunch of seconds acknowleding someone's efforts?

Here you complain about not spamming meaningless words; in the next comment you complain about someone saying ty in every giveaway.
What would be the right thing to say? I refuse to believe that you have come up with something unique and relevant to say to each of the almost 4.000 giveaways you have entered.

Do I really have to answer your question? I'm sure you can see the differences and nuances by yourself.

No, you don't get anything by commenting.
Some private groups value comments because it usually means that that person is active around the forum as well, but of course you need to go see what kind of comments they are.
I personally always thank in giveaways I enter because I'm grateful for giving away a game I'd like to play. If I'm asked something in particular I try and reply. If not, I'll simply go for a "Thank you, have a nice day! :)".
And I mean it each time.

Comment section in public giveaways is generally a bad place to have a proper conversation. Forums are much more well suited for that.

Mhm, ok. Well, I could post 'thank you' on each giveaway. I'd mean it, too. But the very fact that so many people do it, makes it seem insincere. And, as ryuga said, I'd prefer to see an interesting discussion or answers to a question or such. If I see such a thing, I do participate in it, and while I'm at it, include a 'thank you' as well. Oh well, I guess we just disagree, and so long as nobody 'loses' anything by not posting on each and every giveaway, what would I care?
Thank you for your (fast) answers! :)

Can't find one, but you could combine SG Plus's "Comment and Enter" button with this script to reduce it to one click.

Heh, thank you! :)
I made it myself, by combining various Roman and Byzantine elements. It's too bad this - http://puu.sh/2tL9B - is too large / detailed to look nice as an avatar, otherwise I'd use that.

Agreed.
in most cases the thank you is just mindlessly added there and they don't even care, looking up at the comments I see that one person just types "ty" and is done with it...
No need to mindlessly spam, Thank the person for winning the game sure.. but it is really unnecessary to look at the comments to see the exact same post with some grammatical differentiation...
And in all honesty I doubt the person who made the giveaway is going to read every single thank you and take it to heart thinking that each and every one of those people actually deep inside their hearts meant what they just posted.

I see it in another way. Ppl who dont care for thanks won't read the posts at all,so you cant even start a discussion. People who care read the posts and believe me,I check my winners if they posted something and tag dem if they didnt. Besides, you can always highjack a post if you want to say something important.
You don't want the thanks? Fine. Don't jump to conclusions that others feel the same.

I'll usually take a quick look at the comments to see if there is anything worth replying to if I have the time. Don't usually say thanks in public giveaways. I don't like thanks spam in my giveaways so I don't do it to others. Just my opinion. =/
EDIT: Of course I always thank the giver if I win.

Is it unecessary? Maybe
Is it polite and an act of gratitude? Certainly.
I myself have been teached manners and I moreover think that little acts of gratitude is what makes our life brighter.
Comment has been collapsed.
No it does not.
You know what is a cancer? People trying to present their opinions as facts.
Comment has been collapsed.
Or perhaps it is because replies are not tracked in comment sections or that giveaways have a limited duration (unlike threads) or that it is generally hard to keep track which giveaway it was where you commented on?

Some people say thank you just because it is nice and polite. Like me. And I am really am thankful for the chance to win a game. The way people view 'Thank you' posts sometimes has more to do with their own personal feelings than what is actually meant. I am never going to get offended when people act in a nice, polite manner, even if their motivation for it is not the same as mine.

I agree. Even though I sometimes have a hard time thinking of much else to say besides something along the lines of "Thanks a lot for a chance to win this great game, [Insert name of gifter] β€", I like to post at least that much to show my appreciation.
I always tell someone thank you for their giveaways when I enter them, though I don't always do so on each one. I'll usually post a single concise thanks on one giveaway if I enter multiples from the same person, telling them what I'm thankful for. I'd like to think that it's enough.
And I sometimes like to thank people for giveaways that I don't enter, so long as I have something decent to say about it. Especially if it's for a game that I really like. Whatever makes folks feel like their gifts are appreciated. ^u^

I don't think it makes a difference for ppl who care about comment ratio. If someone isn't posting at all it's easy to see. If someone is active on the forums ppl who care about the ratio know him. If someone says only thanks, but isnt active on the forums at all,its easy to spot again and if someone is just a forum spammer ppl who care for the ratio know him pretty quck ;)

But I'm not going to spam 'thank you' on every giveaway for no reason
There is a reason, to thank the creator of the giveaway. They may never read it, but you can still mean it. I check my giveaways for comments, not only to see if the winner bothered to comment, but also to see if there are people who even bothered to read the description (I often try to ask a question in my giveaways). You are free to do things your own way, but I'd prefer if you didn't assume every thank you left on a giveaway was made mindlessly.

I guess you are refering to my post. Each user do whatever they want: some like to talk in chat, others share in forum, etc, but there is also a large amount who only think "yay free games" and never contribute (I really don't care this) neither are active in forum. So, suddenly when they have like 600 entries (maybe a lot more) make a post like "can really win games here?" or "how can I do to win games here?" and that is annoying. I like when ppl isn't a total leecher. I said "it's ok", everybody can't afford money to buy games and give it away, but they can share in forum, chat, be a nice user, play with others, etc. I would love if giveaway comments weren't counted. In that way stats will reflect if user like to be active in forums or not. In my post I'm looking for users who has been here for long time but 0 wins so far, and they at least are active here (I can't be sure for that but it's a try).

I usually don't comment at all, unless it's private or group giveaway. And even then I tend to say something more then generic "thanks" :)
But I see no value at spamming thanks on every giveaway I enter. Of course when I win the giveaway I always thank the person either on mail or on steam friends.

Wow, I never heard of this! I just commented as much as i could to show my appreciation to the gifter! I didn't know there was an evil scheme at work!

I only say something in giveaways when the creator asks a question. The first weeks I joined steamgifts, I used to say "Thanks" on every single giveaway I entered, but I realized that the more I say it, the less meaningful it is. I feel like a robot saying the same thing over and over.

The comment ratio thing is senseless, like many other things in life. You would be deemed a better person here by spamming "." on every giveaway than writing a real thank you to the giver on ones you really are grateful for the chance to win.
Comment has been collapsed.
ThΓ‘t is my point, indeed. I don't care whether you're being sincere or not by putting 'thank you' in each raffle (although, by spamming that, you're 'devaluing' other 'thank you' comments and also reducing the potentional for a nice discussion, but alas), but I do object to the fact that your amount of comments, somehow, as an influence on some things.
But that notion has been partially disproven, as in, it doesn't matter much, so nevermind. :P

Don't enter giveaways you are not really grateful for the chance to win.

In a way it's ridiculous. It's already been proven that there are scripts that can spam thanks on entry to a giveaway. There were also threads on the forum with peeps just spamming random nonsense.
I've long since given up saying much at all on entry to a giveaway as most of the time it will be missed by the giftor thanks to the huge amounts of "THANKS!", "TY!" or "thx" posts. If I win one, I will send a mail to the person after receiving it thanking them or thanking them in steam chat depending. This sometimes will spark up a conversation and I get to talk to new peoples and possibly open up another trade buddy.

Few points:

I write thanks on each GA depending on how excited I am for it. Copy of Don't Starve? Awesome, thanks! $5 indie game from the latest bundle? ty. Maybe thx.
Unless there is something in the description that spurs me to actually write something

You cannot have rules on public giveaways. Good luck with those rerolls.

Hey there. At first, I thought this was just an awesome, kind, and very friendly place. I gave away Frozen Synapse, and got tons of 'thank you' messages. And I see the same on every giveaway.
But then I started browsing the forum, and apparently there's something deeper going on? People are valued on the amount of comments they spam? I saw things such as 'you can win this if you've made at least 500 comments'...?
How does that even work? Does mindlessly spamming 'thank you' on every giveaway somehow make you a better person? I, for one, would prefer no comment at all over something that isn't genuinely meant. Am I just misunderstanding something, or... Could someone explain, please?
As for myself, I've commented three, four, five times, something like that. Either to people I know, or because they asked specific questions. But I'm not going to spam 'thank you' on every giveaway for no reason, as that doesn't seem very friendly to me. If that makes sense. Could be just me though. :P
