Write History Group Train

Ladies and Gentleman,

today (8th May) our little group celebrates the end of The II World War in Europe.

We would like to share with you facts and games (some of them related to this war, but not necessarily).
If you are interested in history and would like to join us, then discuss with us, share some knowledge. We are open-minded, multinational and multicultural group, so don't be afraid, jump on that TRAIN and express your thoughts.

The War have had a serious consequences to what we are now, where we live and how we act. It influences us everyday, even when we do not notice that. And nowadays Europe seems to be again on crossroads, so:

We can hate each other and fear each other
We can build these walls between each other
Baby, blow by blow and brick by brick
Keep yourself locked in, yourself locked

Maybe we should love somebody
Maybe we could care a little more
Maybe we could love somebody
Instead of polishing the bombs of holy war

We (Vaudi and I) would like to thank all of our members for their contributions. We really appreciate it. You've done a great job.

Seems I missed the announcement or I would have added some games.Next time!

World War II has an interesting family story for me. My paternal grandfather fought on the US side and my maternal grandfather and his brother fought on the German side. My maternal grandfather's brother was captured by the russians When the war was over and Russia released its prisoners he was not among them and they offered no explanation. The family believes he either died in a prison or one of their labor camps.

Another interesting story is my mother grew up hearing stories from her parents and others in town how the Nazi would randomly come to towns and search every house for boys/men they could force into the army. They take stick and knives and poke bedding and cushions to check for people hiding.

What an interesting train. I'll have to give it a read through later, but as a historian (East Asian History though) this really excites me.

Thanks for the train, and for the history writeup. It's so important that we don't forget about these events, and let fear & hatred of others take root, and that we stand up against totalitarian regimes. WW II is by far the largest example of how the dangers of these things, but it's not the only one, with witch hunts against people who are "different", and totalitarian regimes threatening war & murdering its own people going on even today.

As a person living in neutral Sweden I don't have any stories of relatives fighting in the war (although before WW2 my family does have a history of participating in wars). The only thing I remember having been told about the events was when my great grandmother talked about how the sound of airplanes made people worried. Every time they heard more than one airplane, people were worried that Germany had decided to invade, and was sending its air fleet towards Sweden.

Since I'm not having any contact to my maternal grandmother and my paternal grandfather for years, I was only able to talk to my paternal grandmother and her new husband about it. While she had to flee as a young girl with her sisters from Upper Silesia fearing vengeance, my step-grandfather was in the German army. I tried to talk to him about it, but I got the impression that it was just an adventure for him. Also his current political world view doesn't really matches mine.. so everytime politics are a topic, it's getting louder. Therefore I've given up on that.

I hope that the persons responsible for historical education will think of good alternatives to contemporary witnesses for the students in the future. I remember that when I was in the 10th grade, we should have had the WWII as main topic, but only just reached it at the end of the school year. Bad joke that was. On the other hand it was already a topic in the 6th grade and with a later class I was able to visit the memorial site of the concentration camp in Dachau.

Thank you and all contributors for the train and the very interesting historical reports in it.

Europa - Globus (don't repeat my failure and read the comments.. it's YT and politics .. ugh)

Never again!

wow! I haven't been around long enough to see one of these trains before, but I love them! I ended up being way, WAY more interested in the information than the games - I barely remembered to check which ones they were each page before diving into the info.

War, huh, good god
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing, listen to me

Oh, war, I despise
'Cause it means destruction of innocent lives

War means tears to thousands of mothers eyes
When their sons go to fight
And lose their lives

Aw man, I was planning on contributing something to the train but it slipped my mind. I'll be ready for the next one. :)

This group is fantastic. What I particularly love is the perspective of those from the other side of the pond as well as the personal accounts that remind us that history is made up of not just famous figures in textbooks, but just normal people who are no different than us, today. On top of that, there are some unique events and battles brought up that I had never heard of. And I have to say, writing it all is a treat.

Huge shout out to all of the members for being so engaging and to Vaudi and Daria for putting it together.
