I remember an old game that u had to escape different prisons, let me try to remember it and i will let you know (it has non pixel graphics, it should be good enough to still play it right now)

-> PC versions for both are currently very hard to come by though :(

The Prison Tycoon games?

Play CS or GarrysMod. They have plenty prison modes.
Or just put your self in a cage and throw the key away.

have you ever tried Far Cry 3? you will find yourself in "escaping" situations almost the entire game.
to see it like a prison type game depends very much of what you consider as a prison (and eventually how much do you need to see a "modern prison" with cells and inmates)

Surprised that none recommended The Escapists, one of the best indie games of 2015.

I imagine it's difficult to make a story heavy game that keeps players interested when most of it is set in one place and they don't get to move around much. But now that I think about it, a Telltale adaption of something like OITNB or Prison Break would be pretty nice :)

What about The Great Escape game? It's not prison, but theme is very similar

A bit OT, but if you love prison shows, take a look at Oz, it aired on HBO some years ago.

The suffering and The great escape are the ones that came to my mind but they aren't what you are looking for.

While someone develops the game, you can watch Oz in you case you haven't already because, honestly, you can't miss that one if you are a fan of the theme :)

You will never most likely see a full blowing 3d prison break type game where the object is to either break out of prison or even build one..

The market is to small to take that risk..

There are some decent games out there,but if you put all your stock into graphics then yeah your choices are slim and none..This is why we get games that look good but are crap over all,to many want graphics first over everything else.
