Arma 2 is really fun in itself and has a lot more mods than just DayZ. That said i bought it for the exact same reason a year ago and i loved playing it, but these days it's full of hackers. That and seeing that the Standalone Alpha is probably going to be released in the coming months i would advise you to wait for the Standalone, unless you are going to play Arma 2 and not just the Mod.

It's funny because standalone is even more broken than the mod currently.

No, it's not really worth it but if you really want to play DayZ or the mods of the mod, you should get Combined Operations while it is on sale. The alpha of DayZ Standalone is going to be at least double the price that CO is right now and it will be lacking stuff that the mod or mods of the mod already have.

If you can find a good server to play on, it's awesome. Sadly a lot of servers have hackers/problems with the way they are set up. I still think it's worth picking up Combined Operations. Even if you don't like vanilla DayZ there are lots of other mods that are worth your time. I like playing Lingor with friends.

If you just want DayZ wait for the standalone as it'll be less broken and frustrating. If you actually want Arma II, then there's no harm in getting it. Arma II can be lots of fun and has other mods you can play as well. Personally, I just like playing with the editor and spawning in tons of jets and watching them crash into each other, but different strokes for different folks.
