Did I convince u?
Yeah, you don't own the game but who cares whether you own it or not after you finish it anyway :D
I was already convinced, but waiting to melt my backlog first. It has regional pricing as well, which is awesome for me. (HB doesn't have and almost all bundles become cheaper if I buy games from Steam one by one -_-)
Comment has been collapsed.
Technically you don't own any game on Steam. The game pass doesn't seem like a bad option in my opinion.
Comment has been collapsed.
You do own the game on you buy it on Steam. This is a myth.
Comment has been collapsed.
Um.. no you don't. You basically are renting a license to play it.
Comment has been collapsed.
That was ruling in a Paris court room affecting the EU, not world wide. And even with that ruling it's being appealed so you still don't own the games even if you are in the EU.
Comment has been collapsed.
That's just a technicality, really. While it's true you don't "own" the games you have in your Steam library, it is a fact that it is unlike a subscription service like Game Pass where once you stop paying, you lose access to your games. That's pretty different from Steam where you can own a game for 15 years without even having to login on your account or pay any fees.
By today's standards of what is ownership, it is quite like "owning" your games, even though that might be the incorrect terminology in the legal side of things.
Comment has been collapsed.
Yes, it's not the same as Game Pass. Game Pass is more like a short term rental like renting a game off Gamefly.
Comment has been collapsed.
Exactly... This all is blown out of proportions...It's just a technicality.
And talking about "owning only a license" - doesn't game physical copies only give you access to digital files in a similar way as steam does? I mean you never really own that as well. You own the disc just like you own your hard drive that has the game downloaded on. But the software is still protected and you can't distribute it or copy it, meaning it is trademarked and owned by the publisher...
If anyone knows how the ownership works with game discs, I would love to hear proper explanation.. But I am quit sure you don't really own the software part anyway and you agree to that when accepting trademark rules. And you can't play a game without the disc anyway.. Same as you have to have steam running when playing the game.
So in the end the only downside to steam is - if it's down, you can't download the game.. with a physical copy you have the files on you. But is it really your property ? I am being doubtful here..
Comment has been collapsed.
You are right. You never actually own a game, music, movie or any media you buy, be it digital or on physical. They are exactly the same but instead of having the files at your disposal on a disc you have to download them. At the case of physical media you own the disc itself but not the data it contains. You own a license to play it, nothing more, you don't own the data you just have access to it, but the files are not yours only the license to use it as stated in the EULA. If you would have any ownership over a game then you would be allowed to resell, redistribute etc but that's not the case.
Comment has been collapsed.
This is the thing, nowadays there are so many games, and AAA ones are really expansive for me on release, so game pass would give me a chance to play them with decent price, and I don't care if I have them anymore after I finish them (SP games)
even If I though about playing them again that would be like 10 years after for some nostalgia, and even maybe they would get a remaster or remake at that time
Comment has been collapsed.
So, it is not like GeForceNow, where you have to own the game before you can play it, right?
Although slightly disappointed that there is no Serbia on the list, I still love the idea, even if I'd rather own the games and get achievements.
However, the backlog is strong in this one xD
Comment has been collapsed.
GeforceNow and Xbox game pass are completely different things.
GeforceNow is a cloud gaming service, allowing you to play games you own, even without the proper hardware.
Xbox game pass is a gaming service, which provides you games, which you can play, if you have the required hardware.
Comment has been collapsed.
Oh, wow! That indeed is amazing! The achievements would be the only thing I'd be missing, and perhaps it would've been the only reason that would deter me from using this service.
Thanks for letting me know!
Onward to conquering the backlog! xD
Comment has been collapsed.
I care about achievements too, and that's why I didn't play my big epic freebies library till today :D
Comment has been collapsed.
yeah it's pretty neat. if you already have an xbox gamertag, you just sign in to that, so it's basically like playing xbox on your pc. still have all your old friends and achievements. though you don't need xbox gold to play online like on console, i think you need gold to use things like party chat. i could be wrong though. if you have game pass ultimate (rather than the base game pass for pc) then xbox gold is included with that anyway.
Comment has been collapsed.
Oh, yup! You were right - you do not need Gold to play multiplayer games, it says so in the FAQ. Well, for people like me - who have no gamertag and thus have no friends - it is ideal! xD No friends - no Gold needed! xD

Here's my hot take on subscription services: eventually they might make you less likely to play games. It's the Netflix effect. You see, at first, Netflix seems like a really good deal. You watch a lot of movies and shows and everything's great. Months go by and you start seeing less and less interesting titles, and you only subscribe when you see something that really interests you. You start spending more time browsing the selection than watching. Your backlog grows and grows because all these new titles are interesting but maybe not interesting enough to actually watch. Pressure mounts as you're paying for a service you barely use. Then, you decide you want to rewatch a show you really liked but find that it's been removed from Netflix. So you look it up, and the show is now on a competing subscription service. In fact, all your favorite shows are on different subscription services. So finally you go "Screw it." and bookmark Pirate Bay again.
I imagine it's the same thing with game subscription services. Maybe replace PB with Steam. And food for thought, it might take you a month's subscription to finish playing a long game, as opposed to a few nights of watching a TV-show. As of right now, there aren't many competitors around so the game pass deal is very good. But you know how it goes: the more popular a service becomes, the more expensive it eventually gets. That's something you can 100% count on.

This is really depends on how much u play
I play like 50 hours in average every 2 weeks according to steam, and I have finished two games already (Carrion, sea salt) and tried few others
Trying some new games for cheap price is really good thing too, let's be honest steam 2 hours for refund is not enough for so many games especially strategy games
Comment has been collapsed.
I definitely don't play 25 hours a week, also I like to play a bit of several games at the same time, so it takes me a lot longer to finish a game.
I don't enjoy feeling like I have to beat a game in x time because it then becomes a chore and I get anxiety, because every second I don't play feel like a waste of money and I'm always thinking about how my favorite titles are going to be unplayable soon
If a game makes me play for 2 hours straight without making me go "okay I'll take a break and play something else" then I'm going to like it
(also if I want to see how a game is before buying it I just watch a playthrough or straight up pirate it ¯_(ツ)_/¯)
Comment has been collapsed.
You play 25 hours a week? Damn! I played less than that in the whole month of January.
But I think that goes to the value of subscription services. If you have a lot of free time, they're great! It's an all you can eat buffet of games. But if your free time is limited, then the value significantly decreases. If it takes me months to play through a game, I might as well buy it for $10 and own it than pay as much just to rent it.
Comment has been collapsed.
U have a point to be honest, in the end u can cancel the subscription when u played the games u are intrested in and don't wanna pay anymore

It's a good service for RENTING games.
Not to mention, it doesn't have mod support, which is very important for pc gaming

This is a personal taste thing actually
For me I don't care much about mods most of the time :v

Currently playing Final fantasy XV with about 15 mods.
I think moda greatly improve a game, IMHO

i'm curious which mods.. i one of those oddballs that literally never uses mods, unless it's related to bugs/performance. i'm a huge final fantasy fan.

I do use it occasionally but it's not supported in my country so I'll just wait till I get a series s and can buy GP ultimate codes

Actually I have somehow big backlog on steam too, but to be honest I have games there I want to play more than the ones in my library
Comment has been collapsed.
My cousin bought be 3 months of it so we may play Sea of Thieves together.
For now I'm quite happy with it, it got me to try some games that I wasn't sure I wanted to buy (like Carto and Forager) and I downloaded a few games I'm planning on playing in the next few months (Control, Ori and the Will of the Wisps, Descenders, Moonlighter, Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice, Spiritfarer and a few more).
I personally wouldn't have bought the game pass on my own because I tend to game only occasionally, but now that I have it, might as well take advantage of it, especially given the winter, quarantine and curfews.
Comment has been collapsed.
I had 3 months for free, but I didn't subscribe afterwards. It felt that every day I didn't play a game from there was a day wasted.
Also it happened that I was playing through a game series (Metro) one of the games got delisted just as I was about to finish the entry before it. Which only made the feeling I had stronger.
Comment has been collapsed.
oh that's really unfortunate, but now I noticed they are giving notifications like 10 days at least before delisting a game
Comment has been collapsed.
lol
Anyway maybe u would try it one day, if there is an expansive game u want to play so much
Comment has been collapsed.
As most other people I had 3 months of Xbox game pass. Played Dishonored 2, Sea of Thieves, Forza horizon and some more. Honestly speaking, it's not quite worth it if you have Steam for more than 2 years and occasionally buy games on Steam sale and from bundles.
Moreover, don't see any reason to pay for that unless I don't have to use a VPN to subscribe to that.
Comment has been collapsed.
I had a month free and I hated it. The way Microsoft handles game files management is a sad joke. I'd rather buy my games on any other platform where I will have permanent access to said games, and where I can actually make changes/troubleshoot issues in the directory my games are installed.
Just not my cup of tea, I guess.
Comment has been collapsed.
same for me my man, i freaking hate not being able to manage the files on MY COMPUTER, or mod a game.
Comment has been collapsed.
Got your point
to be honest I don't care much about mods. so this point doesn't bother me much
Comment has been collapsed.
It's not much about modding as much as it is configuring/troubleshooting/copying files, for me. I never tried modding a game while I had the free month subscription, but simple things like modifying config files to improve performance/etc was impossible.
Comment has been collapsed.
oh this shitty though about game saves, even though most games have their save in separate folder in documents
Comment has been collapsed.
+1!
I got the $1 for 3 months deal and hate it.
What bothers me the most is that when a game you're playing through suddenly leaves the library, you're stuck buying the game from Microsoft if you want to continue, as I've found that the save files are usually encrypted and can't be transferred if you decide to buy the game for cheaper on a different platform. E.g. My Time at Portia: I had to start over from scratch since the save from Microsoft was encrypted and hidden away.
Comment has been collapsed.
Probably no, since the files are coded in weird way
Comment has been collapsed.
how about bethesda's mini dlc, does that still work when using streaming service.
Comment has been collapsed.
Game Pass is not a streaming service. You download the games as if you bought them in MS store.
Comment has been collapsed.
You also get xCloud streaming with Game pass Ultimate (only mobile for now, launching for pc soon?, there was a preview of the windows app a while ago)
Comment has been collapsed.
Right, I forgot about that. Probably because it's not a PC thing yet.
Comment has been collapsed.
I hope they do that, it would be great.
actually its possible especially since EA did it already
Comment has been collapsed.
yup. at first i thought cool not possible, but once i saw EA do it it could be. Only thing is MS are in a very good position this gen and i dont think they would cut a deal with steam anytime soon. especially since they are salty AF that steam is the defacto storefront for pc games and MS believes its thier right to be in that position since they own windows
Comment has been collapsed.
Game Pass is the best deal in PC gaming but there are issues. Specially when you compare the service with Game Pass Console version. You pay the same price as the console version, but get less AAA games, and often get poorly ported versions of the game (Control for example). Many games don't give you achievements on PC even though they do in console (Edith Finch, Donut County are 2 recent examples of this). I am not a stickler for achievements personally, but a lot of people do care about these things. Also console has game pass specific Microsoft Reward quests, which are not available on PC. And don't even get me started on the recent EA Play fiasco. Don't get me wrong, I love game pass and I have persuaded a number of friends and acquaintances to get it, but compared to the console version, PC game pass users usually get the short end of the stick.
Comment has been collapsed.
They announced EA play games will be part of Game Pass PC late last year. Announced a release date too (10 December it was I think). But then postponed it mere hours before the supposed release, without giving a new release date or a proper explanation for the postponement. This obviously angered a lot of game pass PC users. Even now every tweet game pass PC account puts out is filled with people asking when ea play is coming. They have not responded to anything. Console users get EA play already, but PC users get shafted once again.
Comment has been collapsed.
EA always do shitty stuff with pc gamers like first they removed their games from steam, then they got back but without regional pricing, and now they don't want us to get get EA games through game pass
Damn EA

Btw about achievements thankfully most of the games I played have achievements included

Why do you assume devs don't benefit from game pass? With game pass I'm playing games I would never buy otherwise. I have played a bunch of indies and small studio games that I would've never played without game pass. Smaller devs certainly benefit from a curated subscription service rather than having their game be lost in the sea of clutter that is steam.
Comment has been collapsed.
You're making the assumption that the only way of supporting a dev is by buying their game through the platform of your choice. But you have to consider that plebs like us don't have a limitless pile of money that we can bestow upon smaller devs out of our generosity. For many people like me who only get to buy a handful of discounted games per year, because I can't afford any more than that, game pass is a great way to try out games that I wouldn't be spending money on otherwise, because I can't afford to spend money on a game I'm not sure about. Whatever those devs are getting from my subscription is better than not getting anything in my book.
Comment has been collapsed.
I think they are trying to say that, so far, subscription kinda 'forced' them to 'pay' for those small devs since they wouldn't have done it otherwise. But the issue is: if one day everybody is so used to subscription instead of buying games they love, I can't see any reason for them to keep including games from small devs anymore.

The biggest problem with xbox pass is you can not touch 90% of the games which means no mods, no reshade no anything just the vanilla experience, unless you use third party tools that are a chore .
The xbox app is a mess, it installs games on a virtual drive that is locked away from you and there is no way to access them. Before anyone starts googling there is no working method to completely take ownership for the files. You can do it with certain games, but most of them won't let you any modification such as Greedfall that has cool customization mods but you can't use them because Microsoft decided that you won't touch the precious game files or add any of your own. As I said there are tools like UWPDumper and maybe others but I don't mess with them, accessing my game files should not be a chore. There is also risk for messing up your files then you won't be able to repair/delete them because of this weird handling of files.
This is my personal opinion.
Comment has been collapsed.
Got your point
Yeah this actually depends on how much u care for mods
Comment has been collapsed.
I did the deal twice. One for Game Pass for PC and once for Game Pass Ultimate and got a lot of value for $2. It's a reasonably good system and new games get added a lot.

It's a great service for me — I tried and played many games with it — The Outer Worlds, The Messenger, Ape Out, Creature in the Well, for example. Finally got my hands to Prey & The Banner Saga. Finished Sea Salt this week as well :) Some of the games, like Sea Salt or Creature in the Well were a great surprise, and they weren't on my wishlist, so I've missed them otherwise. Some games like A Plague Tale/Afterparty/My Friend Pedro/Felix the Reaper were a disappointment — I'm glad that I didn't buy them on steam. I'm still using Humble, though, so I add games that I especially liked (like Graveyard Keeper & Pathologic 2) to my steam library; others will do as giveaways (like Indivisible). So far I'm pretty satisfied. But yeah, you have to play and mind your time, or you'll just pay Microsoft for nothing. At least they give you ~14 days notice before some game will leave, and usually, that's enough for me. (well, it won't work with Yakuza, lol)
Comment has been collapsed.
It's great if there are a few AAA titles + some notable small ones you want to play but if there's only two or so AAA titles that interest me atm (Control, Desperados 3, and a few indies) then it's not really worth it because I can almost buy one of the games for a month's price. I tried it last year and it was great, went through Ori Wisps, Gears Tactics, Outer Worlds, Wasteland 3, Spiritfarer, Dead Cells, NMS etc, but one month was enough. Might try it again if enough games build up in the future.
Many of the other ones I already got from Monthly or bundles.

I got Xbox game pass recently as gift from a friend, and to be honest I am really impressed with quantity of quality games in this subscription especially when compared with the paid price (like last week they added Yakuza remastered collection, The medium, Control, Desperados 3)
So after thinking for a while I think its really pointless to pay nearly same price for humble monthly annual subscription, especially recently with humble monthly getting worse every month
I know some of you would want to play everything on steam, and I used to be like that, but after trying this game pass, I think u really could use this game pass to play so many good games with really cheap price especially single player games, and in the end u could buy the games that u really like or multiplayer ones on steam
Btw first month is for 1$ only then 10$ for every month after that month
Full games list: https://www.xbox.com/en-US/xbox-game-pass/games#PCgames
P.S.: I am not working for Microsoft :3
