They had gems and auctions last time there was a sale. Then there was the time they had colored factions and each day one color won until Pink or Purple overtook and won two days in a row. I was not in the winning color, that's all I remember. So. What will they think of next?!

What do you think Steam will have extra along with the sale?

Something New
Nothing Extra

I liked that thing about teams and battling for points, but I hope for something new but awesome, not like the event before Winter Sale, at least that event added good things, Gems, but it was not that fun looking at ppl spending their money to win games and background.

I for one really miss Summer adventure 2014. I was a proud member of the RED team and scored 6256 points for our team, while we let our pinky brothers be the ultimate winners of the last day and the whole adventure game, RED team was an overall winner of most of the days of the competition and proud of it! As much fun as it was while it lasted, Winter event later that year made it clear that Valve didn't want to continue that direction and didn't want to explore the possibility of forming teams in a challenging metagame any further. This is the reason why I highly doubt that the factions will be back, but as much as I believe they won't, I actually wish they will bring our old team colors back in some shape or form, that would be a lot of fun!

That sale where you got random free stuff was fun, but I don't remember how it worked. And with all the people who made hundreds of alternate accounts I assume it's gone forever...

Hmm, also think the auction was fun, wouldn't mind a repeat of that. Mainly due to the luck of buying mountains of cheap things before the whole community figured out what the valuable ones were. It's hard to remember the details, but I think if you didn't already have something in your inventory, you had to buy one to see how many gems you'd get for grinding it up.

Although, since I still haven't played a single auction win, maybe I should have saved those gems for a few wishlist games instead. Joke's on me, I guess. :)

The summer sale with the 4 colored groups? Where if your group won 5(?) people from the group would get a random game off their wishlist?

As for the auction I think you're right about needing to have it in your inventory to see how many gems its worth but a lot of people would spread the word of whats worth 100 gems and that item would instantly go up in price.

I wouldn't mind the auction again, I assume nothing would go for cheap this time around, but I did get 10 or so games for cheap. Mostly the Disney games, ones that I wouldn't want to spend any money on.

Hmm, I was thinking of the sale where you did things and got things, forgot all the details. :( Something with lumps of coal, possibly? Can't remember. :(

The only non-cheap game I got from the auction was Fantasy Grounds but somehow I never even installed it. :( Installed Ninja Blade but didn't try playing yet... :( Everything else was just random cheap stuff, several of which turned up in a bundle later. :)

Was this before trading cards? I know there was something with potatoes and another one was some great treasure hunt.

Yes, definitely before trading cards. Back when people played games, instead of playing "steam" ... :)

Those old sales were great... I think Valve has hired too many experts on "how to get the money."

Ahh well I only know of the Potato one. I went back to consoles in 2006 till 2011 (well I still played WoW/D2/D3).

Sale and percentage guessing game, if you can guess right for the next day's sales you get some extra discount or a random item that'd give you discount if you can collect enough of them.

It would be nice to have something that doesn't involve spending massive quantities of money on stupid shit. Like, I don't mind dropping a few bucks here and there, and I understand that Valve has a business to run (not that they aren't already rollin' in it), but I'm consistently disappointed with Steam "events" because the implementation is always explicitly centered on encouraging transactions rather than on fostering a sense of community or camaraderie - that latter may be present to some degree, but it's never the main focus.

In general, over the years Steam has, for me, gone from being a platform I wanted to be involved with because it was innovative and more or less altruistic, to a platform I stick with simply because I'm already so heavily invested in it. Valve is very much resting on their laurels and has been for years; sooner or later one of the other digital distribution platforms is going to grow to the point where it can be considered a legitimate competitor to Steam, and hopefully this will spur the company to, y'know, innovate and focus on the user experience again.

The whole "Lord Gaben" thing is a funny joke, but I don't feel like there's anyone in a position of authority in PC gaming right now that we as a community can truly look up to; and that's a pretty damned sad feeling, if you take the time to consider it. We are constantly beset by charlatans old and new on all sides, and the few people with the power to really drive the industry and the community to greater heights and nobler ideals - like Mr. Newell - don't appear, generally, to have any real motivation or desire to do so.

I'm not trying to sound entirely negative; the 14-day refund policy announced today is great progress, and will hopefully have a positive effect on the rest of the industry, but on the whole, Steam - juggernaut that it is - has done a whole lot of nothing in recent years to bring us forward. There are signs that they're finally waking up to the realities of their own stagnation, and it is my fervent hope that they will Do Something about it and give me a reason to cheer for Bellevue again in 2016.

A traveller, by the faithful hound,
Half-buried in the snow was found,
Still grasping in his hand of ice
That banner with the strange device:
Excelsior!

I like your style, although I confess that I've never sought an authority figure in pc gaming to look up to, especially not a CEO of a major company. Even the "underdog" of the digital distribution platform has disappointed me this past year, gog.com seems to be trying more and more to emulate Steam and other services in order to compete. That is to be expected in the marketplace, but it is also why I always caution myself with holding too closely to any company or corporation.

Well the gems are still around so I'll go with auctions again as I'm too unimaginative to think of what else they might do with them. Interestingly, the gem price is on the rise in possible anticipation of something like this. Contemplated buying a load last week but never did :(

No idea either way likely to be in lesser interest ...

like:
digital standard rat on a stick only 20 cent - or if you got the coin: hyper-mega-golden-diamond-special-foil-rat-on-a-stick for 200$
(you can put that on your profile during summer - likely to smell rotten but you can't smell it anway; expires when summer ends)

I really liked one of my first sales (which was about 4 years ago). It was about getting various achievements from games that were on sale that day to "buy" other items/DLC (Summer Shades for TF2 for example).
The coal event was also interesting, but people took the fun out of it.
