Hi, I was wondering about any good trading tips/advice? I just opened up my first trade on here and don't want to be screwed over.

+1, its safer to buy directly from steam or autorized resellers (gmg, gamersgate, etc) if you are asking because you want to sell games, i dont recomed it too.

Only trade with people who have posted in your Trade topic first, and that you have added yourself. If you get a random friend request wanting to trade, ignore them. Too often they will be an impersonator intending to scam you.

it's not difficult to check whether they're impersonator or not though.

either ask for their rep and check if the steam profile pages match or go to steamrep, take their steamid (and while you're there see if they have a report on steamrep) and check their rep yourself. if nothing seems fishy, i think it should be okay to trade.

Sure, you can easily learn how, but people new to trading don't know how. Trading only with those they added themselves is safer.

Its still something I prefer myself.

don't give them fish, Delta. teach them to fish.

The way I look at it is that it can be a lot more trouble teaching about how to identify a user, and even with Enhanced Steam to simplify things, not everyone is going to install it.

In the last year of my trading attempts, only one random friend request was a legitimate trader.

i'm curious, did they add you for bundled games or non-bundled games? if they were for bundled games, what did i do wrong? why never ever an impersonator added me? how do you attract them?

I mostly trade bundle titles, but I've had some price errors up in the last few months, so gotten the occasional scammer.

Hmm, yeah not a bad idea. I do know its hard to make a rep since I am new. However, trading with high rep traders is a good idea. Thank you for your input.

What Delta & Student said, and also don't forget to check people's feedback. Trading with people who don't have a steamgitfs profile is always a gamble imo, as you can't see any trade feedback. (I don't consider steam profile feedback that reliable... I'm saying this because, sometimes, I have trade offers from people who aren't registered here. When that happens, I ask they go first and if they don't want to, I refuse to trade) Use your common sense, when an offer is too good to be true, it probably is.

If you're new to trading, the Reddit Guides to Steam Trading and Reputation are a good read. It goes over the basics, as well as some common scams and how to avoid them.

Can't really add much to what others have already said. You post could be formatted better; try " * Game newline" (Without the quotation marks). It gives a bulletpoint list format which is much easier to read and use with compare2steam.com (compares lists of games to your current or another's collection).

As Student mentioned, use high rep users to build your rep. Safest way to do it since they've been around long enough to know how everything works and are less likely to risk tarnishing that rep for a single trade. Look for folks with large collections as well, scammers will generally only have a handfull of games and no one is willing to risk the rep of an account with several hundred games on it.

Just a quick formatting recommendation for your trade post: it's a lot easier to read if you list your games vertically, one per line instead of in one big paragraph with commas.

Thanks for getting back to me! I just wanted to also let you know a little about SteamGifts, the term "tradeable" and the difference between those and steam keys.

  • Steamgift / Inventory (Tradeable): This means that the game is in the person's Steam inventory, and can be gifted or traded through the Steam client. Steam recently implemented an anti-fraud measurement that makes new steam purchases as gifts untradeable for 30 days, but they are still giftable. Tradeable inventory items have a couple benefits because 1) they can be re-traded without fear of unknown or accidental activation and 2) they are safer to trade since both sides must agree to the trade within Steam's trading system before they are released into their respective accounts.
