Hmm... I just thought the game is so good everyone already had it somewhere and did not buy it OR kept it after purchase...

In what Universe is this begging? I say I am waiting for a GA since I haven't seen any. I am not asking anyone to give it to me. Even if I asked for someone to make a GA I would still have to win it, no?
Comment has been collapsed.
I honestly can't think of any reason why you'd make this thread other than in hope of someone making a giveaway for you. But hey, whatever floats your boat, it's not like I expected you to admit it.
Also, asking for people to make a giveaway is considered begging
Comment has been collapsed.
Did it occur to you that I wanted to talk about the game itself?
"other than in hope of someone making a giveaway for you" yeah, especially for me and me only... and not dozens of other people. -_-
"Also, asking for people to make a giveaway is considered begging" Where did I say that? Where did I ASK people to make GAs? I said I am waiting to see if there happens to be any. Plus, people WILL MAKE GAs of it whether I/you want one or not.
Comment has been collapsed.
Where did I say that? Where did I ASK people to make GAs?
You didn't. I was talking about that.
Even if I asked for someone to make a GA I would still have to win it, no?
Chill out, I'm just messing around. Do whatever you want, I'm not the SG police anyways. :P
Comment has been collapsed.
When you are "Still waiting for some Arcanum GAs" and "just hope it won't be a public lvl 0+ GA ", it doesn't really sound like you're mainly here to discuss the game. And yes, people have been suspended for explicitly asking to create giveaways, so you are walking a thin line.
Comment has been collapsed.
OK, fine, I'll delete the damn thread. -_- Are those people in the HB thread "begging" HB to have wishlisted games in their new bundles?
Comment has been collapsed.
Maybe you really want to discuss the game, I can't know that. I'm just telling you what impression you are giving.
And if you want to see people talking about the game and maybe even find a giveaway for it : https://www.steamgifts.com/discussion/BhgY5/arcanum-of-steamworks-and-magick-obscura-on-steam-other-classic-games

Just want to say that I now realize how my earlier comments were kinda rude. I apologize if I was kinda mean. No hard feelings? Not that it matters if you do which is understandable, but I just wanted to say that because I've had remorse over my choice of words in this thread during diner and I felt that an apology was in order. :P
Comment has been collapsed.
Dear Sir,
Your apology was not expected, but it is sincerely accepted! :D
Nah, no hard feelings. I still state that I wasn't begging, but that is the mishap of writing and not talking in person. To some, it may sound differently than it would to me; don't know how, don't know why, but it happens.
Comment has been collapsed.
I dunno man, I don't think giveaway requests are beggy sounding. Sure, there's the Community Wishlist tab, but pretty much everything that's not a AAA title, a super popular indie game, or an old ass game is ranked number 238. This kinda gives an idea on what people might like to see given away, especially if multiple people comment saying they too would like to see said giveaway q:
Besides that, most forum giveaways only offers a 1/1000 chance (or less) of winning. So even if someone made this GA, the chances are fairly slim that he'd win.
Comment has been collapsed.
Yeah, I went to those Community Wishlist tabs maybe three times xD And yeah, mostly there would be a bunch of newest games.
Nevermind, changed the description and title but thanks for speaking up.
Comment has been collapsed.
Cool. I heard great things 'bout that game. Never heard someone saying it is bad even if they had something they didn't like about it.
Comment has been collapsed.
It has plenty of issues, but most of the writing balances it out. Gameplay mechanics are really crude as you are very limited in terms of growth. There are dozens of ways to build a character, but some are quick dead ends, while there is a skill that can pretty much wreck any and all enemies after the first 2-3 levels (out of 50) in solo play.
But it has an incredibly intricate quest net, where doing something for one quest can result in half a dozen different quests opening up, closing without you knowing they even existed, or some aspect of them changed. The whole web is so intricate that if you do nothing but start following up a quest you are given, you will most likely get 2-5 new ones along the way, and as you do them, you may find yourself travelling half the continent before managing to finish up the second segment of the main plot.
The world is also huge (literally, the map outside the named places is procedurally generated, so you can actually walk from city to city, but it takes hours in real time without fast travel and it also likes to derp out if you try), the backstory of many places is deep and intricate, and you have an ungodly level of interaction with an enourmous amount of NPCs, of whom about two dozen can be your follower.
Comment has been collapsed.
Haha! That sounds very interesting indeed! :)
And yes, since I like exploring and tend to do EVERY quest there is - I am sure I would enjoy it. It definitely seems like a game which I would play just to play it and not just to beat it, such as The Elder Scrolls series, Gothic series, Forgotten Realms games...
Comment has been collapsed.
Well, this one is exceptionally narration-oriented, so the focus is on NPC interaction and quests.
Also, it will be impossible to play every quests. Most are locked behind skillcheck gates (you are lucky if you can do three mastery quests, and only because melee and dodge are so tied together that trying to only start one may result in sequence breaks), not to mention some mutually exclusive actions. Or some of the really weird and obscure quest, like actually catching a were-rabbit/sasquatch-like hybrid or discovering the lost dwarven clan (that one I think may be actually impossible with at least partially consulting a guide, because even discovering the first step requires a certain RPG player mindset or some leftover reflexes from playing Baldur's Gate 1).
There is some exploration (the shrines of gods quest is the prime example, although AFAIK, most people hate it, especially if they cannot find teleportation scrolls in the shops, which can happen easily), but you discover 99% of the locations through dialogue.
Comment has been collapsed.
Nice! Well, what I meant is that I TRY to do every quest, but I am fine with some disappear due to results of my actions. It is what makes the replay value of the game, for me at least. What I suppose I meant was that I always try to find new quest, or explore every corner; I don't like to leave something unattended. :D
All in all - this game is very deep, which i very much like!
Comment has been collapsed.
hahahha, you got me there! :D I am thinking more and more about that game! :D and you guys are not helping!!! :P
Comment has been collapsed.
Yeah :D I like how the character customization sounds. And the little details attached to it, following throughout the game, as others have pointed out.
As for mods, I usually don't install any mods for the first playthrough. Only if the game is boring by itself and mods improve it.
Comment has been collapsed.
Ah, gotcha! Some were talking about mods which change initial gameplay. I don't mind that; only for my first playthrough/encounter with he game! :P

Thaaaat's what I wanted to hear! thanks for the info, man! (I should really finish Planescape: Torment too xD )
Comment has been collapsed.
One more vote for finishing Planescape: Torment! :) There's a reason it still turns up on various best RPG lists, 16 years later... :)
Oh, unless you hate reading and thinking, but I guess if you did you would have given up on it already... :)
Comment has been collapsed.
Hahaha, no, no I don't :D
And yes, I've bumped into many lists of Best RPG games and on all of them was this one! :D
Comment has been collapsed.
Yeah, I haven't replayed Planescape: Torment in several years, mainly because I can only remember my Steam games. :( Anything GOG or Origin or whatever, I keep forgetting they exist. :(
But good news, after getting that Humble Sierra Bundle I now have more old stuff on Steam, will be easier to remember them now. :) Already tried an hour of Arcanum, which I never managed to finish, not even once. :( Still had fun, though. :)
Comment has been collapsed.
Hey, same here for the Origin and GOG... I don't have many games there, but I do keep forgetting they exist too...
Oh, that's great news!!! I got a pleasant surprise yesterday from THQ (Nordic), Titan Ques Anniversary Edition, so I got back to that one :D
And yes - fun is the most important factor! I am not feeling sorry for not beating some games, for some of them I play only to play them/enjoy them, not beat them :) I don't want them to eeeeeeeeeeend.... :D
Comment has been collapsed.
I had a retail copy. It had a very cool setting and lots of original ideas and was certainly memorable and influential, but as a game I personally don't think it overall rated that well against other well known RPGs of the time. I felt the battle system was a little broken and exploitable - and although that and appalling enemy AI made it easy to progress the games bugs made it difficult to actually achieve things. Graphics were already a little dated on release and the sound and music were poor. It's something I'd love to see a 'remastered' version of but I'm less enthusiastic looking at this Steam release.
Comment has been collapsed.
Nice feedback! :) will keep that in mind! Yeah, I have read about the broken battle system where you could easily rush through the game with a "lucky build" and on the other hand not be able to progress due to an "unlucky one"...
Comment has been collapsed.
It wasn't so much 'lucky' or 'unlucky' builds. The game just clearly very much favoured certain characters and play styles depending on either the turn based or real time combat. For a beginning player it was just arbitrary, after a first attempt it was simply exploitable. Despite a lot of cool ideas it just did not have the balance of the more established D&D based game series that were around - and neither did it have the polish. But that is just my opinion...
Comment has been collapsed.
Hmm... Yeah, I see your point. Maybe some fan-made patch got rid of that exploit? o.O
Comment has been collapsed.
GOG is probably the best option for patches and it goes real cheap there - one of the reasons I'm not going near the BTA tier of the current humble bundle and why I don't expect to see a huge amount of giveaways here for this one...
Comment has been collapsed.
Yeah. it is 5.39 on GOG today. So it WILL probably drop down to 2,3 eur when there is a sale.
Comment has been collapsed.
I think I have seen it for less than that although somebody may correct me.
For me I've played a few of the few of the King's Quest, Police Quest, Space Quest games and haven't been impressed. Other people think they are classics but I didn't get them - it may be a cultural thing. So I'm not touching the $20 tier.
Velocity Wars 2X, Shiftlings, Caesar, Geometry Wars don't look like my kind of thing so I'm not touching the $15 dollar tier either. Due to my age I'm a sucker for both mullets and cheesy FMV games so I might get the $1 tier for Phantasmagoria.
TimeShift is on my wishlist but it goes on sale regular - $12 for that, the Gabriel Knight games that sound interesting but would probably stay on my backlog, the Quest games that I don't give a crap about and Arcanum that I already bought in non-Steam form is just too much.
If it was cheaper I'd get it for TimeShift and make a bunch of giveaways but not at that price...
Comment has been collapsed.
Yeah, I understand...
I liked Shiftlings, they are on my wishlist, and Caesar is one of my all-time fav games, although I like Pharaoh more! :P
King's Quest is also on my wishlist, would defo play it.
Space Quest I would... but not really the earliest ones, except for the storyline.
But Police Quest, nah...
The rest just doesn't appeal to me at all...
Comment has been collapsed.
I also owned a Caesar game before now and didn't feel it matched up to it's rivals. I'll have at least a Shiftlings game up in my next train though if that is on your wishlist and you aren't getting the bundle!
Comment has been collapsed.
Well, I don't know with which Caesar game you started out; I started out with Caesar 2, then moved to 3 and finally 4. And I must say I liked 3 very much, and 4 was greatly refreshing, even though at that time I didn't have the machine to play it at its full potential.
But I must say, in C 3 the aquaducts drove me crazy, since you couldn't actually build roads AFTER placing/building aquaducts... Or was it in 2 and in 3 they fixed it!? o.O Someone should correct me, but I really think it was 3, and fixed in 4... but that is one of the advantages of Egypt - no aquaducts :P
Oh, that's nice to hear! I'll be keeping an eye out :)

Yes, battle system was the weak point =(
As for music - can't agree at all, its great and fits game wery well
I was looking for some good music from game to link here and found this :O

My allegation maybe wasn't very nuanced. I thought the in-game music was good - I'd personally describe it as having a poor soundtrack because I thought there wasn't a lot of it and that it wasn't deployed very well. Even good music can sound bad if it is repetitive and out of context.

One of my favourite happenings from Arcanum:
Start Half-ogre battlemage who fights with bare fists for fun. Take max str, some dexterity, melee, and dex + str boosting spells. Buffed up myself, went after a small, young wolf. In Arcanum, skill level is different from expertise - you need to find teachers who are willing to give you the required knowledge, giving a (usual) non-number boost. Like in this case, apprentice melee = no critical fails. Well, I didn't have it. Critically failing at kicking the wolf (animation against small creatures) I critically hit and killed myself - and as gore was on, that meant that my head just rolled off from my shoulders. So, in a nutshell: I wanted to kick a wolf, and missed so hard, I decapitated and killed myself.
I'm curious how many other stuff did I miss in the game, as I barely knew english when I started playing it, I was so young :D

Hahahahahaa, that sounds like some of my DnD adventures I had with the gang xD
Oh, I really and ABOSLUTELY LOVE the idea of teachers teaching you! First time I encountered that was in Gothic series and I loved it ever since (both Gothic and that concept)! :D

I loved this game back in the day. I'm trying to decide if I want the Sierra bundle to get this game or if I'm just going to get it off Steam. I did several different character types, and some things are broken (as in you can make your character super powerful).
Speaking of stories, one of my favorite characters that I played was a high elf swordsman/time magician. Basically, I took a high elf and maxed his strength and dex. Then I learned time magic that allowed me to cast haste and a spell (if I remember correct) called Tempus Fugit which further increased the character's speed and decreased everyone elses. Basically, with all this going on, if a fight started with a group of enemies, the character's speed was fast enough that he'd be able to run up and kill everyone before they had a chance to move.
Comment has been collapsed.
Defo a GOG sale then! As I said a couple of times in this thread - I prefer GOG for, well, good old games :D
Comment has been collapsed.
:O Even before reading through your whole reply, I've realized you have created Flash that time! :DDD
yeah, that's what I was reading about too, that you can be so overpowered that the game is a breeze...
As for the game on Steam, I just read a review where the guy does not recommend the game: Unfortunately, the Steam version doesn't run well on a Windows 10 machine. It's basically the same old CD game I had, which means for it to even run half-decently it requires multiple fan-made patches through external (and therefore unreliable) websites, and even with those patches running the game is very unstable, and keeps crashing every ten minutes.
Comment has been collapsed.
I had a thief-mage. I used pickpocked from afar on every enemy. If they had intresting items, I just bombarded them with Harm and killed them. If they didn't, I just used the school-improved force desintegration. I think this is the definition of broken :D
Comment has been collapsed.
Phahahhaha :D
When I discover things like that it usually makes me kinda sad/pissed off... And it didn't bore you to the point of no return? :D
This is what Assassins Creed I did to me... Since I got that OP parry-instakill move all went to hell and I got bored of the game...
Comment has been collapsed.
No, as it's not a linear action game with busywork-quests in it (I loved AC2's setting, but game gets old pretty soon, without progress it's really repetitive) , but a huge world with people in it. I could spend days in the capital getting resources from rubbish bins, make granades and sell for profit, or do the dozen various quests that can be finding out a particularly messy serial killer, getting a ring back from the sewers, killing rats (gasp) or even negotiating one kingdom joining the bigger union. If you get bored, just continue with the main quest and finish the game :)
Comment has been collapsed.
Phahaha, sounds heartwarmingly awesome!
yes, that is what I meant. ACs DO get repetitive. Gave the first one like 4 chances thus far (the main pisses-me-off factor was the one where I couldn't skip the freaking cinematics, which, after starting the game over for like 4 times, trust me, you WANT to be able to! :D
Comment has been collapsed.
Nice and unfortunate... :/
I suppose it is of a similar length of Baldur's Gate or Icewind Dale!?

Awesome to hear! :) Man, those games were built to last, not just to be played once...

The replay value of Arcanum is great. It has more replays in it than the Infinity Engine games, due to just how varied your characters can be. Just beware that it's entirely possible to make a character so underpowered that you'll struggle with beating the game. Or a character that's so overpowered that you'll just breeze through it.
Comment has been collapsed.
Just two of my previous replies:
yeah, that's what I was reading about too, that you can be so overpowered that the game is a breeze...
AND
Yeah, I have read about the broken battle system where you could easily rush through the game with a "lucky build" and on the other hand not be able to progress due to an "unlucky one"...
:D So you justify those statements :D

I've owned this on GOG for a long time. I love it, it has one of the most unique character systems I've seen in an RPG, but be careful, it is possible to create a bad character that makes it impossible or very hard to finish the game with . You can pick it up over on GOG for a buck and change when it goes on sale,. I didn't know it was on Steam.
Comment has been collapsed.
Hehehe, that's what I heard too, about making a bad char. Yeah, as I said, I like GOG more for these ancient games and as for Steam, it released it yesterday, I think.
Comment has been collapsed.
I have it on GoG, played it some, but found that the promise (and developer pedigree) was higher than the actual game. It has everything you'd expect from a huge CRPG, lots of choices, tonnes of dialogue, exploration etc, but to me the whole package seemed too mechanical, it didn't really click for me to start caring for what was happening.
Still, it entertained me for a long time, which is more than most games can boast :)

Exactly! Especially these days -_-
Comment has been collapsed.
Yeah… but then there are so many games out there, old and new! If I were picking a long CRPG to play, I'd prefer something more lively — such as Divine Divinity (I haven't even tried the new one yet), or Planescape: Torment, or Witcher (any one, really), or the new Shadowrun, or Mass Effect, or Dragon Age.
Depends on what you prefer and how much time you have, but for me any one of those games feel more heartfelt, and can occupy me for about a year. Nowadays games are being produced faster than I can consume them, and that includes some really good ones :)
Comment has been collapsed.
I concur!
I know I don't have time to play most games either. I often think about time when I was playing the same game for months... Such as Morrowind :D I played that one for the first time for about 3 and a half months and NOTHING else! on the other hand, back then I didn't have internet and a friend and I would talk over a landline about new areas and quests hidden in the legends, books the latter one only I did, since I was reading EVERYTHING! :D
And these days I can't even play the same game for a week without starting up another one... :3

Yeah :/ I know...
this is the main reason why I didn't play Europa Universalis or Crusader Kings xD

I have this game on gog, love it, but it's definitely for fans of traditional isometric rpgs (especially Fallout) and steampunk. It's a wonderfully deep, rich, atmospheric game.
Your poll is too exclusive since I think 90% of the people who would recommend this game own it elsewhere. I had no idea it was even on Steam but it was one of the first games I bought on gog in like 2009.
Comment has been collapsed.
I personally wasn't that big of a fan of steampunk in games before, but I changed my ways :D But I certainly am a great fan of isometric rpgs! :)))
Meh, the poll is not that much important; I'd like to know more about the game itself from people who've experienced it, and let others such as myself to see what they are missing out on. :)

I have it on GOG and I also played it. To enjoy it to its fullest I recommend installing the various unofficial bugfixes and restored content patches you can find googling around (or just look in the GOG forums, or wait for this topic to pop up in the Steam forums). You can also find user-made story modules and other things like a mod to add a car and additional content.
I say, it was quite amusing playing a gunslinger dwarf with various degrees in technical sciences.

Thanks for the heads up! Yeah, I am certain they will pop in the forums, if not by tomorrow morning... :D
User-made story modules are an awesome addition as well!
Heh, gunslinger dwarf! NICE!

Can't vote coz it's not in my library - But I still own the original Disks (Too scratched to play) but game was so good I refuse to get rid of them. It has to be one of the best early 'Steampunk' games ever made, and it's a MUST play for anyone who enjoys rpgs/steampunk.

Then it's a MUST for me too!!! will work on it! :D
Oh, will fix the poll ASAP. Didn't realize you had to have it on Steam in order to vote. xD Silly me. And Khazadson DID bring it to my intention... :/
Crap, it cant be changed... Oh, well, as I said, I'm more interested in elaborated experiences. :)

It is one of the best games ever. I have more hours on this game than almost any other. I played it over 5 years. For an RPG it has the best character creation system ever. I would play through the first town over and over with other character to see the differences. Plus, best episode in a follower's tale ever. hands down.
Love it.

That's what I like to hear... A time consuming, but a deeply immersive game.

The game is hard af, I've played it for a few hours, and it's steep. You'll need alot of patience (and luck, since you can kill someone who is needed to progress and the game won't tell you that if he's dead, for example).
for me it was a bit overwhelming at first but will try it again some time.

Yeah, those kind of games tend to be like that :D
I certainly can't immerse myself in one when I am, for an example, supa-tired xD

If you have played Fallout 1 and 2 you can get the idea. It's basically Fallout in steampunk-y world(not pure steampunk, because it has magic). So you get lots of freedom, many ways to develop your character(no class system), freedom of tackling any quest(multiple ways of solving pretty much any quest). That's it.
In short - badass RPG. My physical copy shares the shelf with Fallout games.

I have the retail version and it's fun. :3
You can do a lot of stuff like crafting powerful items from blueprints you find/buy, steal elven tombstones from burial sites. It has a combat system similar to Fallout Tactics (you can switch between real time and turn based although it is kind of buggy and combat tends to hang and it forces you to cycle through the available combat modes to get it moving again).
There are also some interesting tid bits like the orcish thugs in ghettos leaving you alone when you play a muscular ogre or elves outright hating you when you play as an orc. The journal is also nice that it reflects your characters intelligence, there are loads of spelling errors when playing a character with low intelligence for example.
Character customization has a lot of ways to grow your character: You want to be a diplomat who can talk his way out of almost any situation? Yep, you can do that. You can also be a warrior who relies on cold steel to do the talking or a spell slinging mage? Got ya covered. Did i also mention that the game has guns? Although i don't recommend them when also using magic because that can cause critical failures when using those items/spells and you don't want that. :3
Be warned though, the game is fairly buggy and i recommend installing the fan patch asap.
My first playthrough as a warrior took me about 20-25 hours to finish.
Oh, and the game has an awesome soundtrack, it really underlines the atmosphere of the game.
Comment has been collapsed.
GREEEEAT feedback! :)
Hahaha, that part about the interesting tid bits made me really chuckle! :D (that's an indicator a game has a soul, dammit! :D )
As for the guns, yeah, heard about that, on the other hand, for my first playthrough in RPGs I usually pick a spellcaster :D
Guns have to be reeeeeally really well implemented in the game, as in to give you that good feel of distance, but so much of invulnerability, if you catch my drift. And that's just one of the reasons I usually do not play a gun wielder. I do play one in Van Helsing 1 and I must say it is really well balanced in my opinion. If I did not have a melee, tanky follower I'd be dead in no time. Well, on the hardest difficulty setting at least.
