What are the odds of getting something that could at least cover the cost of a key price to unlock the crate?

For the first time since I got CS:GO, I unlocked a crate and this is the crap I got.

Put it up for sale immediately. It's ugly as hell anyway.

not playing the "opening crates" game is the only way to win it

this.
If you can't resist, only open crates that have a lot of skins you like.

This too.
I really don't care about crates, keys, trading cards, achievements...I just want to play.

Never ever EVER open crates. Not in TF2, not in DOTA, not in CS:GO. If you want to gamble, just play the lottery.

Why would you waste a key like that? You could have traded for a perfectly decent [insert valued commodity here].

I think I'm done with this unlocking nonsense.

I had a case sitting in my inventory since last year so I thought might as well try it out. Could have used the key to purchase a game instead. Luckily I have more than 40 keys in total.

I opened two operation phoenix crates. I spent 3,6 euros on keys. I got this drop from both crates.

I've only found disappointment in CS crates, so I'd say don't open them if you expect to get something good out of them, do it only for fun if you have the money to spare on keys.

And about actual chances to get something good out of them, some people get a knife from opening just one case, while some people open 500 cases and don't get anything good. Mrtweeday on Twitch sometimes streams huge case openings and he gets 1 knife from 500 cases at best.

The chances of covering the price of the key? Next to none.
How do you think Valve can afford hosting massive sales (summer sale, Christmas sale)? Easy, they make lots of profit with idiots that open crates all day long. ;)

Don't forget the Dota compendium, that was a money printer. It's funny how usual is for Valve to say "fund a prize pool" when they want to say "line our pockets full"

They can host massive sales because they create nothing, it's publishers who stand before decision "ok, we either make big money cut or forget about getting any kind of money from this old shit".

That's why they make sequels every year - console games usually don't sell after first months and retail shops don't buy new boxes of old games when they still have old, release-day boxes.

Well, that and also the fact that these digital items in games like DotA2, CS:GO, and TF2 are entirely virtual and have no real value. Valve would actually make more money by increasing the drop rates for more valuable things from crates, because people would buy more keys and the commission they take on sales would go up too.

Permalink

Ah but the values of the items would go down, because they'd become more common, and therefore opening crates would become less appealing.

Not necessarily. Look at the patch notes for drops vs. sales price. Doesn't seem to fluctuate that much.

Yeah, like when a stock splits but the value doesn't decrease by half. Always great for current investors, shitty for everyone else.

What ArmadX said.

Also, some digital items do have a real value. TF2/CS:GO/Dota2 keys are commonly used as a currency for trading, so basically, it has become a currency. Also, anything that people are willing to purchase with "real" money becomes a valued item, as it can be exchanged for a currency (Steam wallet credits).

My point about the virtual nature was that its totally free for Valve to produce.

Every Valve crates, case, treasure and whatever is like Pandora's box. Full of grief. So keep it locked and pass it around.
If you wanna gamble, lottery at least has common stake return prizes.

got a knife worth 100€, and a m4 worth 300€ that i sold as soon i got it, and 2 other snipers worth each 7€ and some random weapons that cost 2 to 1 euros.

Market Transactions:
Purchase total:80.04€
Sales total:332.37€
Net gain:252.33€
So yeah there is a small change of making a profit

What crates did you unlock? I doubt I would have this sort of luck. In my nearly 100 hours of play I've only gotten less than 10 drops so far and most were crap.

Here's a question that in my 4 years of asking, I've never gotten an answer to : Do keys drop in ANY of the games? TF2, and the like? I've always heard that they do, but I doubt they would since in TF2 specifically it's Valve's main seller(albeit that doesn't make sense since I think enough keys are out there for trading that no one has to buy them anymore. I doubt they're even used for opening crates)

...Implying Google would answer my question? I obviously know of the in-game store which would include the keys. How would anyone even miss that.

New inventory updates pretty much ensure that keys will evaporate off the market. The last major update wiped out a lot of them, people loved those new taunts.

And I can buy keys cheaper in TF2 than on market most of times, so when I'm trading in the end I'm adding few keys to market :P

i think everyone is also forgetting if nobody opens cases and nobody buys keys, those keys will be worthless a long with the silly crates

but then again people waste money worse stuff like alcohol which is one time use also or worse buying stupid value meal at said fast food place

that is what i find funny how people say buying keys is a waste of money but yet people waste so much of it during every day life the list goes on an on how about Red bull? star bucks?

anyhow i have neither bought keys nor crates as i really do not play either game but my point was simple there are far greater things to waste money on at least using a key to unlock a crate you get something of value

what do you get out of eating a over priced value meal? other then unhealthy eating that will cost you years later in life?

I think you are quite an airhead. Keys are for trading and not for opening crates.

Go ahead and not trade keys. We don't really care about you. They are going to be revoked by your buddy Putin anyway because he stole a bunch of credit cards from some old ladies buying vodkas in Moscow.

I opened like 50 so far, all the types of cases, best thing I got was worth 5USD, mostly $0.05 to $0.5 weapons. I do know someone who got a knife on the first case he opened.

I also got an Electric Hive, it was Field Tested tho, I still sold it for like 13 bucks, so it wasnt a complete loss. I opened another case right after it and got a Stattrak something (I really cannot remember lol) that I sold for 4.50. Before that and since I've opened a total of 10 cases including those two and only have pulled complete garbage. I've given up on cases and am never opening another again.
